So... with SHTF in Libia, gas prices are rising fast. The national average is around 3.20 right now, and expected to rise substantally unless things go back to the norm in Africa. Supposedly, if things were to go wrong enough, we could potentially hit another 1973 oil crisis.

Thoughts?

1. This is Obama's fault.
2. Look at this random link because I dont want to admit I am wrong.
3. Canadian whining because gas is 7.50/litre.

National average is $3.20?

I've been paying more than that for months. Thanks NY taxation.
$3.54 is about what I'm paying now. I watched it jump 12 cents in two days.

I heard more than once that the ONLY reason gas is going up right now is because of speculation. There are no shortages, there is no increased demand, and even if Libya shuts down, they are only a small portion of the overall picture. Put bluntly,  the only reason prices are up right now is pure unadulterated greed.

12 cents in 2 days? I wish that would happen around here.

On my way to class a couple days ago: $2.97
After 2 classes: $3.29

32 cents in a matter of hours. That's the point where your guage magically goes straight to 1/4 tank from full.

Gas is a monopoly. We need to buy gas, so they up the price as they please, and without any competition, there's no incentive to lower the price. The only time we see prices fall is when the gas companies need public opinion to sway to their side.

This. When you see gas go up the day of the freakin' news breaking, there's some gouging going on somewhere.

As long as the Saudis are in our pocket, I don't foresee a gas crisis, unless something major happens with Iran. I remember right after 9/11 happened the gas would go up and down like a roller coaster based on speculation.

But as someone already said, it's a free market. It's far past time we started looking at serious government funding to alternative energy. How many gas shortages can we endure before people begin demanding this?

As far as the Facebook whining I've been seeing, I can only shrug my shoulders. When you make the choice to buy F-250's and drive hot rods, you buy the whole cow. In this era people should be preparing for issues like this by having at least one economical vehicle, if they can at all afford it. Americans live far above their means, and then piss and moan when it comes back to bite them.

Friday morning gas was $2.95. On my way home, gas was 3.15-3.20. Then when I went to help my cousin move to Staten Island today gas was 3.61 average. Plus, they had to pump their own gas!

This.

For some reason, NJ also has some of the lowest gas prices. I have been told its due to "the refineries being located in NJ" although this makes little  sence, since I think that there are only two.

Wow. We pay $2.50/gallon. (at least I think so. It is R9.30 per liter)

And we don't pump our own gas. Hilarious that we live in a 3rd world country and when I went to the UK the first time as a driver I was like Waaat? I have to do it? How?

Kayback:

9.30R =1.3247USD
$1.3247 * 3.8L (per USGal) = $5.03386/US Gallon

Of course, the rapeage in the UK is worse
$8.19/USGal in London.

Historically the cheapest gas prices have always been in Madagascar.

Oregon too.

When we crossed into there I got yelled out when I got out of the car to pump gas.
Do you tip attendants?

I did, because I didn't know to do otherwise.

my 2000+ work miles a month are punching a hole right in my wallet. Since I'm driving a company car that I'm allowed to use personally as well, I'm paying for any and all gas until I hit 2000 business miles. That means if I drive 1997 miles as I did last month- I don't see a dime in compensation.

This.

Libya isn't the giant desert oilfield that everyone's making it out to be right now. Moreso, despite all the stories of strife in the mid-east and everything, the US gets somewhere around 80% of our petroleum from Canada. Yep, Canada. Oil speculators last year tried to get the price of oil up to $200 / barrel, but the price stalled somewhere around $150 before the market crashed. This is just another attempt at the same.

I'm certainly no expert, but I have been doing a little reading recently about this, and I read somewhere that the natural supply/demand price of a barrel of oil should actually be in the neighborhood of $50.

Reb- I have never heard anyone of tipping an attendant.

Although I love when the noob attendants ask "where the gas go" in my car (behind the license plate).

Thanks. Damn imperial (and US imperial at that). Clue into metric measurements already!

I see what I did there, I multiplied by 1.8 not 3.8.

Ouch :p Where can I find a Hybrid?

This means that buying a truck will be much cheaper in a few months.

Other than that I paid $2.99 yesterday and that's up about $.10 from the past few months. However, here the lowest octane rating is 85.5, and not 87 like a lot of places. My car is going to love it when we move back to the East Coast.

Yep, we ship you our petroleum for refinement, then when we get it back we pay more for lower octane gas.

This morning after work I needed to buy some gas.  Everywhere around me was $3.45/gl.  I thought I'd swing over to Sam's Club since I have a membership.  They usually undercut price around $.05/gl.  On the way, I saw that Kroger's gas station had fuel for $3.37/gl.  Sweet!  pulled in there instead.  Scanned my card and got rewarded with another $.03 off the price.  Still cost me over $50, but am happier considering that gas just went up to $3.55/gl as of at least 5pm.  /sigh
