We all play paintball. But do we realize how much it really effects us?  Some people may not feel the same way but paintball has become the biggest thing in my life since i started playing.  It effects almost everything i do.  So far ive written 5 school papers about it and done 2 major projects on it.  All the money i get is immediately spent on paintball.  When im not playing im thinking about it.  everyhitng i do revolves around paintball.  I want your opinions on how much of a part of your life paintball has become.

Paintball is actually an incredibly important means of release/relaxation (lolinnuendo) for me even after maturing as much as I have. I still don't know if it's because paintball is the only excuse I have to see my friends in a different city or if the adrenaline/competition is a stress reliever or what, but I'm noticeably more chipper when I can play regularly.

But,

Word. This enthusiasm will subside, and you'll grow tired of it or replace it in all likelihood. College, lack of money, friends moving away from the sport, etc. will get in the way enough eventually and it won't be what it used to be, so enjoy it while it lasts.

I got into paintball late in life.  It is restricted to time availability.  Too many family functions and house/yard work to be done. I consider myself lucky to get out an play once a month.

What Ceese says. Had a brief run of OMGZ! but that lasted about two months.

Play when I can, hardly have time any more.

But replace "Paintball" with "IDPA" and yeah. I know the feeling. Replace "IDPA" with "learning to fight with a gun" and 100%.

I was the same way back in high school.

Then I went to University. Found other hobbies, haven't played in two years. None of my friends here play. Would love to, just can't justify spending $60-100 for a day of play.

Shooting is my new hobby.

This. Between getting work done around the house, hauling kids to and from athletics, dance, cheer, etc. as well as trying to coordinate with my brothers schedule, I don't play nearly as much as I would like. Add into the mix that the closest rec field is about an hour away, and my preferred field is 3 hours away, it makes it rough to get the ambition to play.

for me it got to a point where it wasn't fun any more.  Only time I played was a team practice or a tournament.  I just couldn't handle the serious business side of paintball.  I'm hoping to maybe go play some open play hopefully by this summer/fall if my knee heals up fast enough.

This.

I played since for about 3 years pretty intensely, but as our team got well known and the srs bizniz side took over actually playing I got sick of it. Don't get me wrong the perks of this far outweighed the cons but I realised I liked paintball so much because it was relaxed and I got to shoot people and let off some steam. Now I was obligated to play and i just lost interest after that. Not to mention the **edited**iness and daft politics that was going on the UK scene was a bit of a pain in the proverbial arse.

I actually had a couple of games of speedball on Sunday at the field me and a friend are running and it was awesome. That was the first time in probably at least a year.

My first exposure to paintball was in the early 80's. Me and my friend were in a state park in NC and crossed into the part of the park used by the military... Unknowingly.

We were walking along on a trail, when this guy fully camo'd with face paint and everything stepped out from behind a tree, and pointed his paintball gun at us, and put up the "shh" motion.

We froze, and about 5 or 6 other guys surrounded us, and then disappeared into the woods without making a sound.

As a kid it was cool, and scary all at the same time. As only later did I realize they were doing a military exercise using paintball guns and we walked right into their camp.

I always wanted to try it.

Fast forward 25 years... and I was back in the woods behind my house, and I remembered that day, and realized I should get a paintball gun. So I got one for my father in law first (knowing that we would follow) and then my brother in law, my cousin, and myself all got them. And we got a friend who had two sons and gear to join us. So we started with 7 players. Today we play monthly in the fall, winter and spring, my next event is on the 23rd. We now average over 34 players per game.

Almost every player that plays at my field, I got into the sport. We have a few that played before, but most use my spare gear (I have 5 complete sets of gear now)  and play once or twice, and then they buy their own and get their friends into it.

All of my events are free, and I even furnish water and cookies, and we play from 8:30 am until around 1:00 pm on Saturdays. In the cold, we have fires at both camps so guys can sit around and tell stories between games. Our group of guys is very close knit, and we have never had a fight, or even anyone cuss anyone else out on the field. Our gameplay is focused on honor and integrity. If you are hit, you are out, regardless of break.

Since it is byop, many times guys bring the cheapest paint when they are new. That is why we have a breaks don't matter rule, as cheap paint doesn't break like good paint.

And once they see how much more accurate good paint is... They quickly upgrade.

I have been filming my games since I got my helmet cam in 08. My youtube is "TrailsOfDoom".
This year because of the huge amount of players I have gotten into the sport, Tippmann and Empire sponsored me. Tippmann sent two complete sets of gear, which has been used at each event for new players. And Empire Battle Tested sent me a bunch of Apex barrels, so every one of my borrow guns has an Apex 1 or Apex 2!

My typical player only spends around $20 total per day to play!

Here is a little video of a game we play at the end of the day when most guys had to leave, but we still have a few that don't want to quit yet!

I just sort of fell out of it after highschool, I'm sure at least partially because of not knowing people to play and it being such a pain to go to places that play.

I joined in on some 2 v 2 games last summer for the first time in 6+ years and actually had a really good time. It's something I'd easily do with friends again, but wouldnt be as immersed in anymore.

For me, the halcyon days of paintball were my college years. I worked at a pro-shop, was a certified airsmith, played for an Amateur-B team in the NPPL (at that time, the ONLY game in town for pro-play) got to meet some really cool people (Rosie, Rocky Cagnoni, Ed Poorman, Bud Orr, Mike and Todd Peveril, etc) and captained my school's team in the NCPA. I lived, ate, and breathed paintball for about 3 years. After school, I had to go out into the world and get a real job which removed me from the scene for some time. It was only after moving back to a major metropolitan area that I got the chance to play again. I spent some time reffing and got out to play at least a few times each year but haven't played in almost 2 years now. I've found that the game that I fell in love with back in my Jr. High through college days is dead and gone. Now, with the proliferation of cheap electros and (relatively) low-cost paint, every firefight resembles a speedball match. I've since moved away from paintball and into kayaking as my adrenaline fix. Not only is it cheaper (one time cost vs recurring cost) but my wife can do it with me. That's not to say that I don't keep a lot of things that paintball gave me with me. I still come to this forum to talk with my friends (many of whom I've never met in person) and have fantastic relationships with guys who I used to play on a scenario team with. Some of whom live close to me and actually hang out with me on a regular basis.

My story is about the same as everyone else. It used to be my everything back in the day, and I havent played in years now. I remember bugging my parents to drive to the town over to drop me off for a day of paintball, and now all of those friends are off doing something else.

I got a car, and the mod bug hit me and that took all my play money, as well as insurance costs. I haven't played in about 5 years of actual playing. I played once about 3 years ago.

I still play once or twice a month. It's what Dad and I do together so I get some leeway from the wife about it in scheduling and in our budget. I get talked into playing a tournament here and there, but I would rather be playing scenarios. I was going to play msxl this year, but that went to crap before January was over.

I've been playing since '84 or '85 and currently play almost every weekend from mid-spring to mid-fall.  I may dial it back a bit this year because of my back.  But even if I do that, I will probably still go to the field, hang out and fiddle with markers.

Actually now that I think about it this was probably my favourite part of the playing with the team. The road trips were often hilarious booze filled adventures culminating in a great weekends paintballing. The guys on my team although for the most part a lot older than me are friends I'll have for life. That's always nice.

While I am a bit jealous, I don't know that I would want to play every weekend either. I think I would actually get burnt out. Honestly, I enjoy the tinkering part almost as much as the playing. I think even if/when I stop playing, I will still buy/build/sell markers for fun.

Currently considering a halfblocked E-Cocker project.

Ones that work equally well with lethal, non-lethal or amusingly painful weapons would be preferred.

I don't get burned out but then again, I spend as much time at the field tinkering/BSing as I do playing.  The guys at the field have hinted at forgoing field fees when I do play as long as I'm willing to work on Tippmanns for them.  (Which is something I enjoy doing.)

It quit being fun for me when I was playing with teams built to compete nationally, rather than smaller tournaments with friends. The higher up you get, the much higher chance you're going to have a couple guys on the team that you just don't like; IMO that takes away one of the greatest parts of paintball, that family feeling you have of just relaxing at your tournaments. There's a lot of time, practice, commitment and, (no homo) emotion attached to playing at high levels all the time, and when it's not combined with success, it starts to suck. Those two things combined basically spelled the end of it for me, for a while at least.

I could not imagine putting in that much time and effort. To not make any money.

I got into the tourny scene for a while. But quit because I realized the reason I played paintball, was because I didn't have to practice, or listen to some coach whine.

To each is his own I guess.

I would like to play the D-Day scenario before I completely get out of the sport.

That's a lot of paintball my friend. Not sure how my old ass would hold up for 5 days of paintball playing. I'm usually a wreck after a two day event.

This too. Few years ago was one of my favorite teams. We were all friends, hung out other than paintball. We basically had our own field to practice at. It made the play so much better.

This year I am definitely taking it easy. Going to play an Xball league, but not much practice involved. Taking pictures for the hell of it too

I think the biggest death knell for me was when Pev's ditched AG paintball in Leesburg to develop their own field which pales in comparison when it comes to rec play. AG was the shizzle, 240 acres of woods, streams, fields, and rock gardens which helped me maintain my classic paintball days memories. Unfortunately, the new Pev's field is just too sterile. Rec fields really shouldn't be mirrored. I completely understand the desire to have a level playing field, but that's never what rec/woodsball has been about. It's always been about using terrain to your advantage. Flank the bastards on the ridge and turn it into a route! But no cover, no shade, and open shooting lanes from flag station to flag station makes for nothing more than speedball in the woods.
