Listening to Andrew Wilkow yesterday a caller was talking about his financial situation. Since Obama took over it now costs him twice the amount to commute to work, yet no salary increase. His consumer grocery budget has risen 50% since Jan 09 also due to fuel costs. Since his family costs are rising he can no longer afford any real recreational costs, so Mom and Pop middle class no longer can profit from his family dining out, a movie, buying a fishing boat or RV, camping, etc. He then made a what I would call a classic statement. "During Bush we could barely afford what we wanted, Under Obama he can not afford what we need."

No . . . damn the guy that appointed that Steven Chu clown to Secretary of Energy.

So nothing to be said about Obama's energy policies that have resulted in the price increases. That silly $.09 per gallon the oil companies make in profits dwarfed by up to $.75 in fuel/gas taxes both state and federal. You sell 1,000,000,000 gallons of gasoline annually in the US you get $9,000,000 in profit, and $75,000,000 in tax income, who is gaining more.
A 100% increase in prices at the pump since Jan 09, Obama's no domestic new drill policy, and no more at the mercy of the overseas suppliers, yes we can blame Obama for increasing transportation costs, from getting to work, to consumer goods to market, and who pays, the worker he feels obligated to 'protect', yet knifes in the back with backdoor costs.

The number of people struck by lightning every year has increased in the years since Obama took office.

Damn Obama!

I hate when people constantly bring up gas prices. We all saw it coming.

Also, that quote annoys me. Inflation is not high, at all.

Just review your standard anti-Bush, anti oil company You-Tube video's of the Bush years when gas went over $2.00 a gallon, now notice the crickets in the trees noise from the same individuals when oil crossed $4.00 a gallon during the Obama years.

It now costs 100% more in fuel costs to go to work, travel the same distance to work or how ever you want to construct the idea, so how are we better off under Obama? Consumer goods have risen 45% on average also based on the increased fuel/transportation costs, yet no blame assigned to Obama and his energy policies.

Yes permits have been issued, has a drill touched a rock yet on these permitted sites, NO. The US is limited in drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, yet the Chinese are more than free to drill in the same international waters. We are being held hostage by OPEC due to the current policies on drilling and refining in the continental US, so simple supply and demand equation. They have the supply, they dictate the costs, pretty simple, have the ability to compete and the balance returns to a more central position. Just state we are drilling and or actually going to use alternatives to pure petroleum, and watch the price drop because OPEC will not want to lose its ability to leverage the prices, and it will make the financial strain to research and develope alternatives too prohibitive.

If you are marketing a widget, and a competator is moving in to manufacture a competative widget, what are your options. Lower the price to make the construction of plant increase the competators price, or raise your price to make his product more competative.

So were the people blaming the Bush during the 2004-2005 gas price spike correct back then or not?

Quote Yes permits have been issued, has a drill touched a rock yet on these permitted sites, NO.

For one, citations are needed on this statement.

For two, is the government responsible for making anyone follow through with their permits or simply inspecting and granting the permit?

Whale you have access to new achieves of the era, as well as You-Tube, you can find the answer to that question yourself, and you know where the results will lead. Looking for citations as we type.

I'm asking your opinion. Were those people in 2004-2005 correct? Was Bush to blame for the spike in gas prices during that time, as his critics proposed?

Well to listen to the detractors of the time, Yes, The Bush/Cheney Cabal I believe it was called, but reality as with Obama directly, probably not. The issue is as we know is "Perception is the 'Truth' of the moment", but the vitriol of the Bush accusations blinded everyone to probably the true issue. The ability to set policy is the Presidents, Obama is on a path to alternatives hense will sacrifice the norms as we know them to be to get there. I do believe the enviornmentalist movement has more to do with drilling and refining policy, the Democrats not willing to offend a core voter base with pro domestic production change in policy.
The volumn of fuel sold draws directly to profits even a $.09 profit to oil company per gallon, yet the considerably higher 'tax' revenue per gallon is never addressed in the total fuel cost equation.
It is just interesting as we know with 'propaganda' how well misdirection during Bush, and now Obama is a total opposite based on voter base needs.

So where do we assign blame as we need to do culturally for the escolating fuel costs, and a lack of a true defined energy policy since Jan09. Just go with hands as blinders 'la,la,la...' into the abyss as our economy starts failing piece by piece based on fuewl shortages and high costs. we can not snap fingers and go alternative, so in the interum where do we go, and how do we get there without destroying our economy or way of life.

There is never a single cause for something like an increased commodity price. I'd imagine it's a combination of speculators and the after-shock of Middle-East happenings is behind the recent spike. Then again I'm not an oil insider.

Quote and a lack of a true defined energy policy since Jan09.

An energy policy you don't like is different than a non-defined energy policy.

Quote fuewl shortages

I don't think we're anywhere near that point. High prices do not mean a shortage.

Curious, what are you guys paying for gas? Because in ND we have the Bakken oil formation in the western part of the state (Williston/Stanley, ect), yet gas for us in Minot is at $4.09+.

Oh, and we are drilling for oil. Sorry to burst your bubble OS, I agree with you, but ND is pumpin out a pretty good amount of crude. Maby im mis-understanding what you wrote. Idk.

Domestic oil production requires a price of around $110 per barrel before it becomes profitable, that's why west Texas oil fields come to life whenever prices spike. I believe shale and tar sands require closer to $150 per bbl prices to become profitable.

The real problem here (besides speculation driven by an unstable world and our questionable currency) is refining capacity. Unless things have changed since Katrina, we haven't been building refineries for decades. The NIMBY effect has a lot to do with our energy problems. Hell, even my town is flipping out over a proposed wind project. Fracking, offshore drilling, and nuclear plants have had some major PR problems lately, and those are some things we really need to reduce our dependence on imported fuels, before you even factor in solar and wind.

In other news, http://money.cnn.com/2011/05/06/markets/commodities_oil_silver/index.htm - an actual news article . I'd like to think that the 10% slide in a week might have something to do with a certain someone getting his face shot off, but it looks as if curbing our driving habits is having an effect. If we want to see more stable oil prices, we need a strong dollar, lower consumption, and better refining capacity to get that to translate to the pump.

^^ about $8.58/gal.  Is that price for gas or deisel though? When we were in Germany, we found deisel to be considerably cheaper than gas.

This article talks about this exact issue, and the way the media helps to prop up Obama's policies that put our gas prices so high.

The article makes a convincing argument.

However, all politicians are "serial liars;" it's just the way it is.

Do I believe the current President is worse than most:  Yes

Do I believe the media helps by neglecting to fact check and challenge:  Yes

Do I believe it will eventually catch up with him and the Democratic party:  Yes

In fact I believe that it will cause the pendulum of politics to eventually swing too far in the opposite direction for a while.

Jimmy Carter was our last honest President . . . he was also extremely unimpressive in the position.

There are about 3.8 litres in 1 gallon, roughly.

So £1.39 x 3.8 = £5.28 (GBP)

£5.28 = roughly $8.66 (USD)

So.... that means it costs about $8.66 (USD) for 1 gallon of gasoline in the UK.
