Bet that thing makes your ears ring.
My brother has a 357 like that. It is scary to shoot.
We once shot a 5 gallon tomato paste can with it for fun... In the snow.
Huge mess.

Yeppers, it's a blast to shoot! Pun may or may not be intended...
It's a Smith and Wesson 686 (which is .357 mag) with an 8.375" barrel and Smith's special silhouette sights. The advantage to the sights is you can set 4 different range intervals in your sights so you can quickly switch between one row of silhouettes to another without readjusting your sights. The thing is, I'm not a silhouette shooter...
I specifically bought this gun to hunt with. Right now, after putting 50 shots downrange at 50 yards, and keeping 80% of them in a 4" group, I feel I can successfully hog hunt. In a few months of practice, I feel I'd be capable of deer. Unfortunately, at only .357 mag, deer will be about the largest I can get.
Frankly, I think I did rather well considering I'm not used to shooting anything more powerful than .45 ACP, and with irons.
Thinking about optics.

My dad has the same gun, but with different sights. He always wears it on a shoulder holster when he hunts. About 10 years ago he was working on his ambusher stand when a 4 point walked within 10-15 feet of him. The 686 did the job. It ran a little ways but bled out rather quickly.

I love the gat. Needs more stag horn grips.
It's a .357 though? Only a slightly beefed up 9mm. Not exactly what I'd want to hunt with. Just remember optics don't help you shoot better, just see better. You should only put one on when you can do what you want with it without the glass.
That being said, can't wait for pics of it with a scope. Also want pics of the hunt :)

KBK: Handgun hunting is a subject I've been interested in for a long time. Before I went out and bought the gun, I looked it up, as well as the application of .357 as a hunting round. .357 mag is on the small side for hunting, but at up to 75 yards it should be able to proficiently harvest a deer (whitetail). At least, when the shooter is competent enough to shoot at that range. :P The glass is precisely for that: to help me see better. I don't really want magnification, just cross-hairs. I'm thinking a nice occluded sight or red-dot would do just as well at the ranges I'm interested in shooting at. Before I go chasing larger game, I'm gonna start with boar, which are considered pests here, so no licensing is required, and there's no limit.
Ammolord: STAY AWAY FROM THE JUDGE. IF YOU SEE ONE, CAST IT INTO THE FIRES FROM WHICH IT WAS FORGED. Actually, that goes for most Taurus...
Grips are on the list of things to do!
Guess how much it cost me. :D

Cool so long as you realise with the .357 shot placement will be absolutely paramount.
My brother is the handgun hunter of the family. He uses a .454 Casull. Going back to our other thread, because it is cool. And it is.
Honestly, a T-1 or a Trijicon RMR will be wicked on that thing. I prefer something with a little more oomph but that 8" is what the .357 was designed for wasn't it? It should be the bees knees with some premium ammo in it.

Can anyone recommend some good, low to no magnification optics? I'm new to glass, so I don't know the good brands. That said, I don't want to spend $1k+ on Trijicon or silly ACOG crap. I just want something that will put a dot or cross-hairs on a target/game animal and reliably withstand the kick of a .357 and the abuse of field work.

THe best optics are the Aimpoint H-1. Of you can get an ... R-1 IIRC, they've stopped shipping those, but they are H-1's in a shiny case. Say hello to mr spray can.
The T-1 is too much sight for what we need.
The Trijicon RMR is also a good optic. Even the standard LED only version is GTG.

Iron sights are legacy sights.
While optics have their drawbacks and BUIS should still be considered, with things like the Trijicon RMR dual illumination and the Aimpoint T-1's 50 000 hour battery life, red dot sights are here to stay.
IIRC the RMR has a back up iron built into it. I may be wrong, but I think it does.
While BUIS aren't life dependant on a hunting weapon, do you really want to have to can a whole day's hunt if your optic goes down?

I wasn't actually serious, haha. I can see why he would want optics on his shiny rifle. Personally, I don't see the need for an extra sight on my Glock, but for a gun like his, I can see something like that being useful if hes going to hunt with it or something like that.

Absolute bull. Your experience is highly unusual with EOTechs. They're in very wide service militarily in extremely harsh conditions- I used my own personally purchased one while deployed, of an identical model to what we issue (552 A65). I never found it had any trouble keeping up. Nobody I know who's used one has ever had trouble with them in terms of reliability. It's possible you got a couple from a lemo batch, or possibly that they were counterfeits.
The EOTech and the Aimpoint have been torture tested side by side many times, and fairly consistently they come out in a dead heat- the only real variable seems to be what people like in terms of reticules. The EOTech offers some advantage in that you can still use it with the screen partly damaged or occluded. The Aimpoint is a bit smaller in most models. Both can use the flip to side magnifiers. Battery life is so long on both that it simply is not at all an issue. The EOTech has somewhat better physical protection in the metal hood around the screen. The EOTech offers a larger screen for quicker target acquisition under stress, or sub-optimal shooting (e.g., while on the move form a hatch).
Both are very excellent brands of sights, the EOTech no less so- as evidenced by Trijicon's attempt to imitate what they do, and by the very broad market EOTech enjoys amongst those whose lives literally depend on them.

$525 Canadian, so about $500 American at the time. Good deal for a fine sight.
My rifle early on in the tour. Later on I got gifted an M203, and swapped the crappy flashlight for a proper Surefire M3. I had to ditch the PAQ-4 because once the 203 was added I had nowhere to mount it. The BUIS was an absolute piece of crap- composite, not actually metal. Fortunately it never became an issue.

At the time I was just a rifleman, not in a leadership role, so I got it- but yes, I wanted it too, just in case I ever needed it.
Mack nailed it. As an infantry section commander now, I give my guys whoa re the best combination of fit/smart my light machine guns (what you guys would call a SAW). There's much more science to machine gunnery than you'd expect, and I want someone who understands intuitively why the geometry of it matters, and who can hustle into position, as well as take initiative to find good fire positions of his own accord. My M203s, not as huge a deal, since they'll stay tight with their fire team, but I still want someone smart and fit to have it. Heavier weapons are not a punishment or a grunt task- they're the larger half of my fire power, and of the fire power of the platoon.
Really, actually, I want *all* my soldiers to be smart and fit. I prioritize my personnel assignments in the order of my second in command, my two machine guns, the two other fire team leaders, the grenadiers, and finally my own fire team partner(s), depending on numbers.

73% of those 132 went bye-bye because the opposed battery compartment, supposed to alleviate loss of electrical contact under recoil impulse...works. You don't lose connectivity under recoil impulse any more. Instead, because the batteries are not shock-isolated properly, and because batteries aren't designed to take jarring or impact from their short axis, they warp, crack, and usually leak. So at least you lose connectivity in an innovative fashion.
...with the added benefit of getting battery acid inside the device. Somewhat more caustic than water, one might surmise. So, those are a no-poop hard-kill; no getting a kit from EO so you can fix their short-sighted workmanship for them. |

Now my personal sample is only 2 EOTech's but they both died within minutes of starting to use them. My sample of Aimpoints is only 2 as well, including an old Comp, and they run great.
The EOTech has a nice reticule, but I'm happy with the single dot. Personal reference? Maybe but if a simgle dot is what is needed for being more reliable, so be it.
I'm really glad yours worked and in harsher conditions than I ever used mine but because the ones I used in such controlled enviroments were useless, I can't in good faith suggest them.

.454 Casull? Raging Judge? GIMMMMMMICK. Of all the guns that can shoot the Casull effectively, the Raging Judge is probably the worst choice. Also, you'll get tired of shooting Casull after the first box, especially out of a snubby revolver...
That said, Taurus is sub-par quality coupled with brilliant marketing, and a fame I can only imagine is linked to Max Payne, the movie...
.45 LC is a terrific round, out of a gun that was designed to shoot it. It can be loaded hotter than a .44 mag, and with less recoil. Something about pressure expansion; I'm not familiar with the physics.
.454 Casull is only SLIGHTLY better than a hot .45 LC, and the gains aren't worth the price of the ammunition. It is a good large game hunting round, but for anything else, it's useless. If you want kick, stick to hot .45 LC or .44 mag, which is considerably cheaper.
.410 is a round that should be reserved to dispatching pest animals at very close ranges, or training youngsters. It might also make a good bird round, if you like to challenge yourself. It is also underpowered for a defensive round.
By themselves, each round is a decent round within its own niche. However, you CANNOT have a gun that EFFECTIVELY shoots all three. You are compromising far too much. The rifling will not have enough twist to get any form of accuracy so the barrel can fire the shot. I'm sure the rifling isn't good for shot patterns either, but there's really not enough of a barrel for any reasonable grouping anyway...
Do you have a problem with racoons? Snakes? SMALL rabid dogs? Sure, get a Judge. Do you want to shoot a gun and feel some recoil? Get a 9mm. Do you want to feel like Billy Badass with a big gun? Get a .44 mag.
I don't like the Judge, and I don't like Taurus.

I do like Taurus, but you have to pick and chose what to like, IMHO.
And the Judge is not one of them.
My brother's .454 Casull Raging Bull is a fantastic piece of kit. You can shoot slightly cheaper and easier to find .45 Colt through it as well. Kinda like shooting .38Spl in a .357 or .44 Spl in a .44 Mag.
A good version of the "Judge", if you want to stick with Taurus is their Tracker. <checking Taurus website - it looks like they have changed lineups since I last looked. Didn't they used to make a mid length barrel Tracker in .45 Colt?

Bri will probably answer this better, but I'll try to give it a shot. (Keep in mind it's been a few years since I had to know this stuff.)
The M203, despite an effective range limited to approximately 400 meters, provides two advantages: It allows the engagement of multiple "soft" targets that are grouped together* and it allows the engagement of targets that can't be engaged by direct fire. As an example, consider hostiles firing from behind a berm that small arms fire can't penetrate. Bullets bounce off the berm or bury themselves in it and rockets either fly over it or waste their explosive force moving dirt as opposed to shredding hostiles. A good M203 operator can, at the right ranges, drop HE** rounds behind the berm and eliminate targets that couldn't otherwise be engaged. (The "long range hand grenade" description is quite accurate.)
The primary use of the M203 was anti-personnel when I was in. It could be used on non-hardened vehicles but in most cases these were considered "point targets" and required a direct hit for full effect. The stats I'm offering now are from memory but are interesting gee-whizz stuff and anyone who wants to check them out can probably find them on the net. I think the guaranteed casualty radius was 5 meters and it was considered to cause 50% casualties out to 15 meters. (With HE rounds.) Casualties/injuries were possible beyond that but were considered unlikely.
On a barely related note, it has always bugged me the way that the M203 is portrayed in action movies. I've seen them treated like they were magazine fed and pump action. (I.e. just pump for the next round like a shotgun.) This is not accurate, it is a single shot weapon. I've also seen some massive explosions from the impact of the round in movies. Also not true. It doesn't destroy buildings/guard towers and fling bodies hundreds of feet with flames arching skyward and huge mushroom clouds. The most accurate portrayal I have ever seen of this weapon in use was in the movie Heartbreak Ridge when the Recon Platoon engaged the guards at the bridge. There was a puff of smoke/dust upon impact and the hostiles dropped from multiple, and not really visible, wounds from shrapnel.
*Known as an "area target," that is a target that can be eliminated without the necessity of a direct hit. Just putting the round in the vicinity is usually sufficient to neutralize these targets. **High Explosive round--the round most commonly carried*** by US M203 gunners. The HE differs from the FE in that the first makes a lot of noise and provides a noticeable affect where desired while the second just makes a lot of noise. ***The other rounds available for use at the time I was in included Multi Purpose (MP) rounds which were like large shotgun shells or portable claymores, White Phospohorous (WP) and Star Parachute (flare) rounds. Now that I think about it, I believe their was a (largely ineffective) Armor Piercing (AP) round and one other as well.

I'm going to ask a dumb question so I apologize in advance:
Does the thing (shell?) fired out of an M203 have it's own continuous propulsion? Or is it like having a small mortar on your gun?

Like a shotgun but used like a mortar for indirect fire, Whale. The war head is supposed to arm itself after a set number of rotations, 30 I believe, before it explodes on impact. Some are bouncing betty types that explode after they bounce off the ground or a target. Then there are beehive shots which is just a big buck shot shell for really ugly encounters.

Gracias. It was something I'd always wondered but never looked up.
So there is, essentially, two explosive charges within an M203 ammunition. One pointed out the back which detonates, and the pressure sends the thing out of the tube and at the enemy. The second explosive charge goes BOOM and spreads pellets at the enemy.

An M203 round is just a 40mm bullet. It has a case and a bullet head and everything.
The case stays behind like in most guns, until something opens the chamber and removes it. The bullet is the payload which flies off like a big fat bullet and then explodes when it hits.
That pic is labelled wrong. The grey hatched area labelled "propellant charge" is actually the brass case. The greenish stuff is the propellant.

400m is *very* good gunnery with an M203- the real art there is having a gunner who can instinctively accurately judge range.
The M203 is good for soft targets and for shooting over obstacles. It's also good for putting rounds through windows- an explosion, even from a puny 40mm, is a bad thing in a closed room.
The M203 is a great weapon for *suppressing* an enemy. There's something about explosions that makes people not want to be in or right next to them. If you know that exposing your position is likely to make you the focal point of explosions, you'll be more reticent to shoot- or to move. They can help to fix an enemy while another manoeuvre element flanks them.
I do know a couple guys who had to use the M203 extremely unconventionally. They were in one scrap where the enemy was in a compound less than 50m away. They were using the M203 almost literally as a 40mm mortar, firing in a close to vertical arc to drop rounds over the compound wall. Dangerous as hell for the gunner, but it worked.
In any case, it's a very versatile weapon that gives me, the section commander, the organic ability within my section to make things explode out to 3-400m. We'd likely have a couple of M72s as well, but M203 ammo is easily carried and resupplied.

DeTrevni, what is so evil about the Judge? I kind of want one just to shoot .454 Casull

.454 Casull?

1. Thoughts on the S&W knockoff?
2. You sir, cannot say that something is impractical. After all, you want to carry a SAA for CCW and owned a Redux.
