So I think I have an uncontrollable 100% polyester shirt fetish which is getting out of hand now.  So anyways I was at the Salvation Army clothing store thingy today and picked up 3 super nice shirts today.  1 white short sleeve and two red long sleeve shirts that are all in great shape.  All for about 11 bucks.  The last time I was there I picked up a super clean Michigan State University golf shirt for like $2.50 which I think I'll wear it to class for my teacher and the only other guy in our class that are both U of Michigan fans.

My collection is extensive enough to cover my weight range from late winter fat to late summer trimmed.  Small to XL.

High-five for shopping at thrift stores.

A large portion of my wardrobe is from Goodwill.

Whale: do you shop at goodwill for the novelty of it, or price?

I kinda like going to goodwill but I dont buy clothes there. Last time I went I bought a pabst mug for $1. I felt like a hipster.

I always feel bad for shopping at goodwill.  I always feel like I'm taking clothes from poor people.

For clothes, mostly price. I can find hardly worn dress clothes there for work for less than  $10 normally.

I've found Izod and Dockers dress slacks with no wear or stains for $4. A good pair of those brand new is going to be about $40.

Dress shirts as well. I've gotten two Ralph Lauren Oxford-style dress shirts with white cuffs - which can be almost $60 in some stores - for $5 per shirt.

People just throw stuff out, and I'll gladly take it.

I got two $165 executive office chairs for $35 per chair at a local thrift store owned by a hospice charity.

Some company in town had purchased all new furniture and dumped the old stuff off for the tax write-off. Only minor bumps on the bottom part, where the wood connects to the wheels. But no stains on the chairs, as this was a white-collar place.

I'll take it.

For other stuff: knick-knacks, strange things, etc., I like the novelty of the weird stuff you'll find.

Don't.

Their behind-the-scenes is more important than the thrift stores.

Almost 84% of their revenue goes to fund a huge network of employment training and job placement for those with various issues keeping them from being able to work - disabilities, poverty, no education, no childcare, no transportation, etc.

They have free - and extremely discounted - vocational programs, and have contracts for free and discounted child are, bussing systems, and temp worker places.

There was a time that I used to hit up the thrift stores as well. Mainly when I got my first job where I had to wear dress clothes. It takes some scouring through the crap to find the good stuff sometimes, but I built a pretty decent wardrobe for under $100 once. We donate a fair amount of clothes nowadays as the kids get older.

I donate tons of stuff to Good Will.  A lot of it is personal items and even more from foreclosure houses.

I also feel kind of like I'm stealing when I buy stuff there but I get bored when I cruise to my wifes hair appointment out of town with her occasionally and the Salvation Army shop is close by.  It can't really hurt anyone when I look over the entire shirt supply for 1-3 shirts.  Including the 4 total from Salvation Army and the 1 Tippmann jersey that I wear for doing yard work and cold weather bike rides, I'm up to 34 polyester shirts.

I need to hit the Salvation Army close by my house some day.  The desire for polyester is just to powerful.

I used to feel somewhat guilty as well, but as Whale says, the stores are not just to sell cheap clothes to needy people, but to fund their other programs. About the only reason I could find to be somewhat guilty is if you are going in, scouring the racks for new or barely used designer clothes and selling them on Ebay for a profit, but even then you are spending money with them and helping the cause. I once bought a custom tailored wool blazer  for like $15.00. It still had the tailors patch sewn into the inside of the jacket, probably originally a couple of hundred dollars.

This Nike shirt looks like it was never worn.  I get the "Tiger Woods got it for free from Nike and never wore it" feel from it.  It's a nice red long sleeve under shirt.  Then this other red long sleeve looks like it's a Detroit Red Wings 1st layer or something.  It's got an old english D just below the v on the neck and looks like its only been worn twice if at all.  Then the white short sleeve looks like a shirt that you get when you sign up for a marathon event.  It's got the event name and sponsors on it and looks like it was never worn.

I'm fitting in a stop to the local Salvation Army in my schedule when I head into town today

Probably easier to find smaller sizes in good shape. Most of the 2XL stuff tends to have food stains on them.
