SOPA is in essence, a bill being written and voted on by a generation so far removed from the internet that they can't possibly have enough understanding to even tackle the issue. It's essentially having senior citizens write computer laws.

That sums it up.

Because of my whole "Being too busy to do literally anything except grade" thing for the last two weeks, I've been out of the news loop.

I honestly don't know anything about it except that reddit hates it.

(Yes, I viewed reddit during that time. Why do you think it took me two weeks)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the government will be able to take down any site "infringing on copyright laws" and the site can be sued for "damages." Essentially if something is even copy and pasted, the site can be held liable. Megaupload and other steaming sites will cease to exist.

Yep. Also, any search engine used to find said copyrighted material will be at fault according to this bill as well. i.e. Google, et all.

I'm not sure if the site itself would cease to exist, my understanding is that the US would employee a blocking system ala China. But I could be wrong, it's been a few weeks since I read up on this. I can tell you that, from what I've heard, Firefox may cease to be available.

Nothing I could write here sums it up any better than this.

Generally I'd make a statement about lobbying and pressure from big business, but some of the biggest names in technology (Google, Microsoft, etc) have violently opposed this.

Also, I find it funny that this is a "big government" bill from the Republicans (in Texas of all places). If the Dems had written it, all you'd hear is OBAMA IS TAKING OVER THE INTERNET TO KEEP CHRISTIANS FROM POSTING ON FORUMS. PURSACUTIN.

http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/199991-sopa-markup-adjourns-after-marathon-debate- - It appears the vote is being delated.

Thanks for the rundown about the bill, by the way.

Update: Not postponed until January, but this coming Wednesday.

Apparently, the slimy scum that is that Judicial Committee decided to quietly change the date for the next hearing to this Wednesday, Dec 21, 2011.
