So, I graduated from Appalachian State this Sunday, woohoo me. As a graduation present, my dad got me this piece of artwork.

Kimber Ultra Carry ii, in stainless steel. .45acp.  It's got some pretty nifty Kimber Night Sights on it as well.

Here it is with "big" brother. (little brother? I can't decide, bigger framed gun, smaller caliber)

Hands down the most surprised I've ever been with a gift I've received, except MAYBE my car when I was about to turn 16. Couldn't believe my dad was able to purchase me such a nice gun.

It'll be my off-duty CCW and probably my ankle/SHTF piece while working, once I find a job.

Anyways, I thought some people here might appreciate it. It'll be at the range Thursday or Friday, whenever this weather clears up.

Nice .45 you got there. I cleaned a 1911 for the first time yesterday, I felt like a man LOL

Serious question though... I have read in a few places about LEO's carrying a backup gun, most of the time a S&W on the ankle. Honestly... whats the point? If a badguy steals your regular sidearm?

My dad carrys a short-barrel Kimber 1911 (can't remember which particular model, TBH).  Very, very nice gun.

My friend had a Ultra Carry like that. I love the look of the bead blasted finish.

I Carried a Glock27 on the ankle for about a year and a half. Strictly for a backup in case of some catastrophic malfunction with the primary. I changed my mind after a while because (other than the element of surprise) there is no good way to protect it from getting snatched in a tussle.

Seriously. I hope this one runs like a champ. It sure does look pretty.

Kimber will not be getting any of my hard earned cash for a while.

Last I heard Fort Worth PD requires you to wear a backup pistol.

I knew I a guy who carried a PPK, and I kind of realized at that point he didn't actually plan on having to use his backup sidearm

The best explanation I ever heard in the Yes/No debate on having a JIC weapon was, "The arguments against having one don't hold a lot of water, and it's always better to have one and not need it than vice-versa." Most of the patrolmen I know carry one on their ankle or elsewhere, just in case of a catastrophic failure to their primary, or a tussle that has your gun tangled with the assailant and unable to fire.

Sure, it might not be a great option, but that's why it's your backup/last resort. There are more than enough stories out there of an officer needing his reserve for me to feel like it's worthwhile.

Think anyone in a gunfight ever felt that they had too many guns or too much ammo?

Maybe if only one of the guns/ ammo matched and they were all in a massive jumbled pile?

C'mon Choop! If violent video games have taught me anything, it's that all guns use the same ammo! DUH!

Or they DON'T!

Like Homefront. M16, M4, Diablo DPW, M249 and some other STANAG guns couldn't harvest ammo from fallen guns......

Kayback,
I don't find that as infuriating as COD. Apparently, everyone on earth makes their own, unique ammo so you can only scavenge ammunition from YOUR previous SCAR, not the 6 lying on the ground around it.

I've found with the ACR, I can't keep enough rounds in her without it. I loooooove that rifle. So much that it's probably going to be my next acquisition in the real world.

Here's what I've got going on as of now:

Tallen, I had the full Magpul setup on my M-4 before I sold it. Loved it, especially the popup rear sight.

Aren't that MAGPUL grip things supposed to be extended way out in the front so you stretch your arm out?

Yes and no. That's one of the purported benefits of it, but for me, that's the most comfortable position. Also, the reason I went with the angled fore-grip instead of the vertical (I have both) is that I found I didn't grip the vertical like it was supposed to be gripped. I had a more angular grip with my thumb against the hand-guards. Hence I switched to the AFG.

I didn't actually use the grip on mine, I just had the stock, handguard, and rear sight. That front grip just feels weird to me.

I prefer the grips that fit around your magazine well.

Interestingly enough, I probably had around 250 bucks in my Magpul accessories, and they allowed me to sell the gun for 400 more than I gave for it. They really enhance the look and feel of the gun more than you can see.

I went the other way. I started out just using the rails, then I got an AFG and I thought they were the bees knees. They really do work quite well.

However after a little thought I decided they don't actually do anything using a shorty VFG as a handstop won't do. They are more or less dead weight on the front of your gun.

I also could not find a light mount to work well with it. I used an original Surefire mount, a Daniel Defense mount, a scope ring (actually worked the best with the AFG) and finally a Viking Tactics mount. The Viking Tactics workes the best, putting the light right where I want it, around 1030-11 o clock.

I'd prefer a pistol light at 12, ahead of some BUIS, but I have a fixed front sight on the gas block. :(

I currently use a stubby vertical grip, with my thumb along the top of the rail, on the light. When I'm next where the gun is I'll take pics.

Took her to the range today, no pics though, Dad was too impatient. Shoots really really smoothly for a 3" .45, recoil is easy to handle, gun hits where you point. It's a little more difficult farther out(25yds+), but easy enough for qual range. Put somewhere around 100 rounds through it today, and had 0 problems except for a feed issue right at the beginning before the spring got a little loosened up.

After shooting it for a good while, my dad's USP felt like the sloppiest gun on the planet.

The only thing I dislike is the lack of an easy way to decock the gun.* That, and because it's so accurate on it's own, I have to take the blame for any errant shots. Tongue

*Not in an effort to carry Condition 2, because I'd never do that. After you empty a mag, drop it, and then release the slide, the hammer remains back. And, because I don't like to dry fire my gun(let alone let that be a habit), I have to hold the hammer and pull the trigger to slowly let it down. The grip saftery makes this a little awkward to do, but I'm mostly just being whiny.

Pssh, as long it's not a rimfire, dry fire away.

Dry firing won't hurt it.

Series 80's also have an issue with dry firing don't they?

There is nothing wrong with thumbing the hammer down on the chamber when it is EMPTY. There will also be no damage from the occasional dropping the hammer onto the empty chamber versus a dedicated dry fire exercise.

If you're too worried about dry firing (my dad's the same way), you can always buy some snap caps.

-------------

Posted By: Kayback
Date Posted: 27 December 2011 at 1:43pm
But those are only for dry fire practice, the need to drop the hammer on an empty chamber to reset the main spring won't work well with the snap cap, unless you leave it in permanently cos taking it out will result in hammer back....

If you will hurt a pistol by occasionally dropping the hammer on an empty chamber, it isn't up to standard.
