Why u gotta h8? Lemme axe you this: what would it take to successfully pull off a bowler? In relatively casual wear.

Meh. Facial hair is out. If you can't tell from the pic, wiry goat stubble is the best I can muster. I'm about to lop that off. I do like pea coats, but I'm leaning more towards Western, methinks. I am Texan.

In casual wear? A time machine. DO NOT DO IT otherwise. Don't be one of those clowns that just ruins a good thing. The fedora is a beautiful hat, but guys like the picture up higher have just ruined them. Wearing them with ugly short sleeve button ups, khakis and skechers...
You'll have to be a very dapper gentleman in a rather nice suit, attending something befitting of the attire in order to pull off the bowler. Doing it casually you might as well just spraypaint "awkward" on your chest and wear that instead.
Seriously, don't do it, for mankind everywhere.

Point accepted. I believe I have the ability to clean up nicely, so I suppose I can keep it to formal if necessary. That said, I like high quality hats, so would you be able to recommend I hat I could actually wear on the town? I'd be willing to dress to meet it, but I would like to keep it reasonably casual.

A good newsboy cap would be my suggestion. I have a couple friends with them and they're quite nice/ look good, even casually (provided you're not a total neckbeard when casual)

Or do what makes you happy, even if it makes you look like a dork.
I think my way's a bit more mentally healthy, even if it can be, as I put it in the chatroom, a lady repellent.

So I take it I was the subject of conversation in chat? Good, then I'm doing my job. Look, here's the thing, I have a desire to do what I want, world be damned. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bought a bowler. However, I tend to let other people's opinions affect me too much. I'm trying to break away from that. I think I will use this hat as a social litmus test. If you are somehow put off by my hat, then I'd rather not have anything to do with you. Sure, quirky people can be socially awkward, but isn't that really the point? I tend to find normalcy boring. So go ahead, wear a bowler with a T-shirt. Why not?

Since the conversation turned serious...
I'd say wear what you want, but I tend to agree with Choop. Fedoras were part of an era where men prided themselves in dressing fancy and if you wear it out of context it just doesn't work.
This isn't a matter of looks, you look better dressed nice regardless. It's just that the clash inspires dissonance...like wearing a pair of dress slacks with an old AC DC shirt. Or wearing a hippie bandana with a tuxedo. Or a backwards cap with anything.

I have a habit of supporting dissonance, though.

Well, I am starting to wonder who I need to impress. I have a good job that makes good money, I play guitar, I have several motorcycles, I enjoy going out and doing things, I longboard and play paintball. If you think I'm awkward or no fun, and won't take the time to say hi because my hat is out of place, sucks for you. Yeah, I think I like my hat.

I didn't. It was a thread about my new hat. Then came self doubt for a bit, and THAT'S when I asked for advice. Then I remembered I have a bowler and no longer cared. So giggity.

Eh. I agree. Saying "I don't care" is incorrect. I guess now I'm trying to prove a point, and that by itself implies that I care. I still maintain that if you think less of me as an individual based off a goofy hat, than I really don't want to associate with you. Of course, that means I'm dressing for others with a similar mentality, so in the end it all means the same thing. Which is fairly ironic...

I assumed it was because they were found objects, so they had been discarded by the original owner, while still fit for the hobo lifestyle.

The hat isn't up for debate, it's the wearer and the attire/ situation the sweet hat fits best with.

Eh. I still maintain that I can find a way to make the hat look decent with a semi-casual outfit. But if not, I like the hat enough to not particularly care, and quite like the idea of a social litmus test.
As for making it work, from Wiki:
"The bowler, not the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_hat" rel="nofollow - cowboy hat or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sombrero" rel="nofollow - sombrero , was the most popular hat in the American West, prompting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Beebe" rel="nofollow - Lucius Beebe to call it 'the hat that won the West.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowler_hat#cite_note-6" rel="nofollow - [7] Both cowboys and railroad workers preferred the hat because it wouldn't blow off easily in strong wind, or when sticking one's head out the window of a speeding train. It was worn by both lawmen and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw" rel="nofollow - outlaws , including http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat_Masterson" rel="nofollow - Bat Masterson , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Cassidy" rel="nofollow - Butch Cassidy , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Bart_%28outlaw%29" rel="nofollow - Black Bart , and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_the_Kid" rel="nofollow - Billy the Kid . It is in America the hat came to be commonly known as the 'Derby.'"
Given the amount of people who wear Western garb here (Texas...), complete with cowboy hat, I don't see why I couldn't theoretically do the same with a bowler. I know social norms have changed, but I find it amusing that what is considered a dress hat these days was originally a working man's hat. BRINGING IT BACK, BABY.

The only way I can really picture pulling that hat off is by going all of the way with a nice long sleeve dress shirt with a garter on your bicep, a pin stripe suit vest and dress pants to go with. Handlebar mustache is optional. And at that point I would begin to refer to you as "Clint Yeastwood"

Truth.
I can't stand not wearing a hat. It drives me nuts so when I am dressing up I usually wear one of these:

Should be noted that my dressing up is just Khakis, and a sweater. Sometimes a dress shirt under the sweater. I don't wear suits.

I'm just going to throw this out there, but people who say "don't worry about what anyone else thinks" are lying to themselves. Humans are pack animals. It's fine to say you don't want to be a part of up to date trends or whatever, but everyone needs people around them. That's why there are so many jokes about non-comformists just conforming to a different group. It's human nature.

I wear a Panama hat in the summer to keep the top of my head from turning bright red.
The wife says when I throw the sunglasses on with it I look like I'd be at home on a southern plantation.
However, since I shaved off the goatee* and just kept the mustache I have to admit that I look more like a corrupt southern cop in a bad '70s made for TV movie.**
*Darn trimmer guard fell apart in mid-trim and I had to start the beard over. **Think Rosco P. Coltrane meets Burt Reynolds by way of Yul Brenner.
