Anyone on here go hog hunting? I think I will start going at night, and was wondering if anyone had any advice to give. I'm not going to use dogs or move around. I plan on keeping one of my feeders stocked throughout the spring and just go at random.

I've never been hog hunting myself, but half my family is pretty involved in it.

I know you have to be careful where you shoot them and the type of bullet you use because some of their bone structure acts as an armor plating of sorts and can make bullet penetration kind of tricky.

I know a few of my friends hunted them with .223's but shot placement was pretty vital. My uncle uses a Vietnam era M-14 (semi auto of course) and occasionally a .44 mag pistol. One of my dad's friends hunted them with a knife until he lost a testicle. His name is Merle and he was interviewed on an episode of monster hunters where they were looking for a giant hog.

Of interesting note-that guy just went to jail for his SECOND shootout with cops while holding his wife hostage. He be crazy.

I've never hunted US Hogs before, but wouldn't .223 bounce off the chromed valve heads?

Seriously though I've had good luck with .45ACP vs warthogs. From a handgun. Good front quater shots or frontal shots. The frontals were headshots and didn't penetrate the body cavity. The front sides were good shoulder hits with the JHP's stopping just inside the opposite skin.

I'd look at a .45 Colt lever action if you are wanting a rifle. I don't get much involved in blood shot hyper velocity .vs low velocity round arguments. I just happen to like .45 Colt in lever guns.

I've done some late night hog hunting in my time. I found beer worked well as bait.

Myself and a buddy used to use .30-30 levers and'd carry a good sidearm as them things can be vicious like velociraptors up close.
I hear it's also a good idea to ferment the corn with beer but never did so myself.
Oh, and they love the stank of lady pig parts, so buy some of that lady pig scented stuff.

You will need a Saiga 12g with 30 round drum magazine equipped with a Eotech.  And mount it to a quad on a pintle mount for ease of use.  Oh, maybe a flame thrower mounted beneath the Saiga so you can BBQ on the spot.

They say "Saiga 12 gauge" too much on that show.

Also, one episode I hated where Steph was showing some woman a home defense shotgun and were talking Saigas. She's like oh if you don't like the 12 gauge try a .410. The woman shot the .410 and said "Wow, I like this one a lot more. Less recoil. I'll take it. BTW I am a cop".

Meter maid perhaps, but no LEO.

a lot of people hunt them with ~12" ar15s. 5.56/.223

keep weapon mounted lights (you dont have to use them but you want to have them ready) and carry a pistol. everything i have heard about hogs is that they are vicious and if you dont kill them they will do their best to kill you...

not sure if its hype or not but i wouldnt take any chances.

unless your in a tree stand in which case fire away...

i think a youtube search of spear vs pig will bring up a crazy hog hunt...

Ive run into a group of hogs on the run twice this year. Once with a bolt action rifle and the next time I had an M4. The experience was more fun with the M4, but I want a higher caliber. If I only had the AR-10.
