Legacy is bigger, with more trunk space, and feels more solid in construction and handling.
Lancer is going to be a better deal monetary-wise and was a solid driver, didn't feel cheap, but not as solid as the Subie.

Both are within my budget, both are good to drive. Just wondering which one the forum would go for.

Lancer.  Based purely on looks.

Which trim are you looking at for each? I like the look of the lancer now than I did with the older versions. They look so mean. I like Subaru and Mitsubishi, but if I had to choose, I would probably go Mitsubishi.

Lancer defintiely has it in the looks department. I thought the Legacy was a Camry for a second. However, people seem to love their Subarus. I've never heard anyone with as much allegiance to the Mitsu brand. With that said, I've never owned either make. I tend to like Mazdas.

Everyone that I know that has owned a mitsi has had stupid problems with them, weird stuff like windows not working, electrical glitches and such.

Subaru's I've heard good things about, nothing negative.

I'd go for the one with the best mileage about now...

Which is better in the crash test? That is usually a deciding factor for me. Not that I crash often, but if you do take a header, I'd rather be in something safer than average.

Subaru just took automaker of the year this past Tuesday if that means anything.

I'm going for a Lancer. Haven't looked at a Legacy to be honest.

Trims are listed in the poll answers.

As to the other questions. Mitsubishi is offering a 6-year 60k-mile warranty on their 2012 vehicles. Subaru is offering 3-year 36k-miles for theirs.

The Lancer is a CVT without gear selection but it does come with AWD selection (2wd, AWD Auto, AWD Full Time). The Legacy is a CVT with paddle shifters and dynamic (read: computer controlled) AWD and stability control.

Lancer is a 2.4L I4 MiVEC with 168BHP. Legacy is a 2.5l H4 SOHC with 170BHP.

Both are IIHS "Top Safety Pick" vehicles in their respective classes.

As far as AWD, I think Subaru has it down best.

I'll have to admit, considering the way gas is going up, I would be looking at gas mileage pretty hard. Depending on your commute, you may want to see what else is out there.

The Lancer looks better, but it is my opinion that the Subaru would last longer

Have you tried the compare competitors tool on the Subaru page you linked?   Should help you make a decision.

Yes, but it's a bit biased, just like any company website would be.

As far as mileage goes, they run pretty close. The Subie gets better by a few MPG.

The only issue I have with Subarus is uncomfortable seating.

I <3 my Subie... so naturally I have to go Legacy.

My aunt and uncle picked up a 2011 Legacy recently, pretty sure it was the highest trim before stepping up to the LGT (which they didn't want because of the MPG hit).  Man, I was blown away by the quality of it for how much it cost them.  Also, I'd venture to say you'd have less potential for problems in the Subaru, though the Mitsu's longer warranty is appealing.

I don't know that you could go wrong either way, but my vote would be the Subie.  Seems like a more stable platform made by a higher-quality manufacturer.

Subaru make air worthy engines as well. while the Lycoming is the standard, a Lance Air Legacy with a Subaru engine is the best of both
