Tis the time of year again. As of now the standings are:
East: Rags-Clinched Bahhstun-Clinched Florida Pittsburg-Clinched Philhadelphia-Clinched Devils Ottawa Caps
West: Blues-Clinched Nucks-Clinched LA Nashville-Clinched Detroit-Clinched Hawks Stars 'Yotes
Me? I am rooting for the Devils of course, who at the moment, will play Florida if the season ended (there are four games remaining for most teams). The Devils will clinch their playoff spot if the Caps don't win every game. I hope the Caps stay in ('Cause I kinda like the Caps) and eliminate the Rangers in the first round.

I can't tell you how much I currently HATE Dale Hunter. It's obvious that he can't instill the drive to win in the Caps. He also makes stupid, stupid line combos that just don't work.
In the off season, I think Semin, Beagle, Brouwer, and Perreault all need to get the ax. Wideman and Carlson need to get dropped form the defensive line.
Edit: And if we could coax Viktor Kozlov back from Russia, that'd make me perfectly happy. Better than Semin by far.

I miss Viktor Kozlov, he played really well with the Devils but did not get along with the GM or coach, I forget.

This is my least favorite time of year to talk hockey. EVERY February and March, the the wings start coasting, back ass first into the playoffs, and then try to kick it on. We're down our best PK guy, our best depth player, and we are playing terrible hockey.
If the Playoffs weren't what the wings specialized in, I'd just tune out now and start saving up for my Red Wings Parise jersey.

I hate this time of year since every time I go to a sports bar, sloshed idiots try to talk to me about the B's and get offended when I tell them I consider hockey to be a slightly higher-speed version of soccer with more fighting, and if they're foreign I remind them that soccer actually sucks o watch on TV and the States is the only place that realizes that, or has enough TV's to make that judgement.

It's funny how, as time has progressed, I've all but stop caring about hockey. Yet, at the same time, my interest in sports has wildly increased.
(Magic can get into the NBA Playoffs and the Rays are poised for a big run. Hooray).

Ive never really followed hockey but if I had to choose a team I would pick Blackhawks because all my other teams are from Chicago.
Cubs baseball starts this week! Im excited even though I dont expect much this year. They are heading in the right direction though.
And the Bulls seriously miss D Rose.

Hunter sucked hard when he was a player, he sucks as a coach. He belongs back in the minors. With the skill that the Caps have, they should have had more post season success. I'll just say that I'm really glad that Ray Shero is the Pens GM, not McPhee...

Who's everyone picking to play or, and win, the cup? Homerism aside.
Wings over Flyers in six, but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Kings get hot and storm out of the West behind Quick.

Regardless, the Bulls go into the playoff as the No.1 contender overall though, right? Who is better, overall, than them this year. Maybe the Heat, Thunder, or Clippers. But even the Clippers are live and die by Paul and Griffin.

Speaking of which, it's opening week. The Rays made some late-post lineup changes that (hopefully) will end up working in their favor.
The more my life progresses, the more my appreciation for baseball increases. I think it's a maturity thing. Baseball is a cerebral sport, more-so than some others.

That largely has to do with the fact the talent is the unit of disparity, not the paycheck.
The margin between what makes someone a superstar and what makes someone average is much smaller in MLB. There are also more finely tuned positions. An ace pitcher is an ace pitcher. They are expected to have a low ERA and Earned Runs, and either a high foul count or high K count. A superstar in the NBA is expected to, now-a-days, play a hybrid of every position and then some. Dwight Howard is a center and then some. Lebron James is a forward/guard and then some. Everyone has to shoot and defend at 100% at all times. The difference between a Lebron James and a, I don't know, Richard Jefferson, is really astounding.
That's not because James is better paid. It's because he's better at the game.
I don't really see that lack of parity as "disgusting."
If the accusation is that money is too much of an issue in the NBA, then the Heat would have been champions last year. Instead, we got the Mavs, with an aging Dirk and a guard who was drafted in 1994.

My theories:
- The Trop is in a bad neighborhood and not really near anything of any importance.
- The Trop sucks -- baseball in Florida should not be played indoors, dumb seating, bad lighting.
- The Trop is in St. Pete, and St. Pete is sort of a quiet beach town. People in Tampa have to drive a half hour to an hour in traffic just to get to it.
- The Rays were so bad for so long, they sort of had a chilling effect for a lot of fans, despite their recent success.
Essentially, it's mostly because of The Trop.

I'd argue that it's more about NBA owners/GMs being unable to handle their resources properly, and it was clearly evident leading up to the lockout this past year. Some of the contracts that get handed out in the NBA are ridiculous(Gilbert Arenas anyone?).
I agree that the difference between LBJ and a guy like that are vast, but oftentimes the contracts don't represent it. The NBAPA has crippled that league.

I've found the exact opposite to be true. Any sport where there is no time limit on making a move is a dumb sport. Even chess has timers. There is nothing, I repeat NOTHING more boring than watching baseball on TV. In fact, the only thing that makes it bearable in real life is beer, heart-attack inducing food, and the mob mentality of a ballpark. Claiming baseball is any more cerebral than any other sport is just plain wrong. Football is every bit as cerebral, if not more so, and if you want to talk math, Hockey, like pool, is a game of geometry all the way. The ONLY reason I even go watch the Nats a few times a year is that the food at that park is fantastic, the beer isn't quite overpriced yet, and tickets are still dirt cheap ($2 ticket days anyone?!) Hockey got really expensive here in DC last year. I ALMOST don't want us to make the playoffs this year so that the bandwagoners will quit going and the ticket prices will drop back down.

This is usually the opinion of someone without the ability to understand the complexities of baseball.
Edit* I should include a winky emoticon or something to indicate that I'm only joshing. But really though. Hockey can be fun, no doubt, but it's not as complex or cerebral in its construction as baseball. It's just not. Every baseball game is a chess match of batting rotation (Who are you putting in the cleanup? Has your lead-off guy been hitting poorly lately? Can your late-rotation guys hit off a lefty if they start him?), starting pitchers (Left/right, is he a fastball thrower or a breaking thrower? Does he throw inside or out when he's on a low streak or high streak? Is he aggressive? Fouls/high count? How long can he last? If we play him now are we burning him?) who has the top sub spots (Do you pick the next lowest ERA? Or the guy on the hot streak? Or the guy who counters the style of the starter?). How is the park you're playing in? Is it pitcher friendly or batter friendly? What's your team's OBP this season quarter? What's the other team's OBP?
Etc. etc. etc.
It's the reason that entire books of statistical analysis exists for baseball and not really any other sport.
It's not a fast game, no. Some may even call it boring, if they have a dulled attention span.
But there isn't much actual argument that baseball is the most complex, cerebral of American sports.
Football does have a certain level of complexity and cerebral element, as it does have fine-tuned skilled positions.
Hockey? It's about on-par with basketball, as far as complexity. That's not a slam against hockey at all, it's just simply not that complex of a sport. It uses geometry about as much as basketball uses physics.
Fun to watch? Sure. Complex? Not at all.

Whale, you and Elliot from "Elliot in the morning" here in DC would get along well with the whole baseball thing. Mind you, no one agrees with him either. I think you and he are the only baseball nuts I can actually name. Sure, the world series is interesting, and as I stated before, the mob mentality at the ball park is what makes watching it live somewhat bearable. But if the game was REALLY as interesting as you seem to think, do you honestly believe they'd have to hold so many silly games on the sidelines and in the stands during the actual game to keep the fans from falling asleep as the pitcher spends 5 goddamned minutes shaking off calls from the catcher? There's a reason baseball is "America's Pastime," it's fun to play. But that's just it, it's something you play to pass the time. If you were to ask someone what America's Sport was, you'd hear "Football" as an answer more often than not. A pastime is something you do, a sport is something you watch.

Interesting wasn't the point -- interesting comes from what you find interest in. Cerebral and complex was the point. I happen to find more complex, albeit less fast-paced, things more interesting. I enjoy that particular aspect of baseball.
Things like:
as the pitcher spends 5 goddamned minutes shaking off calls from the catcher? |
I enjoy that. It's a mind game. The pitcher is calming himself. He's mentally preparing for the pitch. He's recalling the last times he pitched to this batter. He's recalling their swing patterns. Is he a power hitter? Does he overreact to a break? Is he afraid of anything inside? He's remembering if they tend to swing at anything or are conservative, if they'll reach to get contact or if the're going to sit back and take balls. If he knows he's against a nervous batter he'll call off pitches just to mess with the guy. He's playing a game of mental chicken.
All while listening carefully for calls from the infield for someone stealing base. All while peaking at first base to see if the runner is leading off too far.
To someone who prefers the more fast-paced, yet overall less complex, games like hockey or basketball, I can see how this can seem like a waste of time, or can seem boring. I get it, I really do. But it doesn't make baseball any less complex of a sport.

I would like to believe so. With a healthy Rose and Hamilton (even though he hasnt played much at all) I believe they are one of the best teams in the league. Miami and OKC are also very talented so we shall see. Right now I don't see how anyone but one of these three teams can win it all. I still think the Lakers are the best team in LA too.

The quick whistle is definitely an inconsistency that makes me yell at the tv all the time. Sometimes they barely know where it is and get the whistle, others its locked down and being hacked at with sticks and it's fine. Damn discretionary rules.

^proves my point. NHL officiating is craptacular across the league. Every fan is biased. They think that the refs are actively doing everything they can to screw their team.

There's a reason fans across the league are widely united against Crosby and all the BS attention he gets. Last night did nothing but showcase his lack of class to anyone who hadn't had their team suffer through it before.
He's nothing but the kid who's a teachers pet in the classroom, and a brat with tough friends on the playground. He constantly does things that would lead to fights for any other player in the league, because he knows someone will always be there to jump in for him at the last moment.

Good lord does the officiating ever suck in the post-season. Linesman Murphy needs to learn to stay the out of the skating and passing lanes, and the refs need to decide that if they're putting the whistles away, that they stay away, or if they're going to call it tight, that the need to make EVERY damned call.

It's always the same with you people. Crosby is just lucky, Crosby is just protected by the league or whatever. After all these years, an Olympic gold medal, a Stanley Cup ring, and all of the individual awards, you simply cannot deny that he is a talented hockey player.
That said, no one says that you have to like him. I can understand some of the push back, I really can. I think Ovechkin is a jagoff. I have seen him leave his skates to throw checks on plenty of occasions, and I was at the game in the Igloo in the 09 second round when he went knee on knee with Gonchar. But regardless of all of that, he is a hell of a scorer.
Everyone knows that I am the board Pens fan. And most of this will be dismissed, but I don't care. I don't think anyone ever said that he should be a finalist for the Lady Byng trophy anytime soon. Everyone sees the game of hockey through the tinted glasses of their fanbase. Everyone.

When did they stop enforcing the rule about your skates leaving the ice on hits? I distinctly remember that being a no-no, but you see it allllll the time now, from nearly any player.

GAH, my post was eaten by the spam filter.
Officiating in the NHL is just a train wreck. Refs in the NHL were always good for screwing up, realizing the gaff, then doing a make-good by penalizing the opposite team with the first thing that even resembles a penalty.
But this playoff seems to be a downright mess. As Tallen said, it's not consistant, even within the same game. It's as though they'll call everything, then pocket their whistles and "let em play" until they have full on lost control of the game. And suspensions occur for some hits, while two days later, you'll see a similar hit not even being reviewed by Shanahan.
It's a shame that an otherwise amazing game has such bad officiatiing.

My beef with Crosby isn't with him being a good goal scorer. Kids got a nose for getting to the right spots. It's when the league and media shove him down our throats because he's a flashy, North American player. His defense is garbage, his attitude on the ice is atrocious, and yet we are constantly shown him in the media as the face of the league.
Remember when Crosby **edited**ed and moaned about dirty plays in the NHL, and then threw elbows at other players heads?(And don't get me started on Lemiux's hypocrisy) I just don't respect Crosby, plain and simple, and there's a very short list of GOOD NHL players that ive ever felt that way about.
Steven Stamkos broke the 60 goal mark, and I don't have a negative thing to say about him because he goes about it the right way.
All that said, I respect anyone who stands up for their team, even if it's full of goons and a lobotomized Matt Cooke.

It's cause he's a clean guy and generally a clean player, so sponsors see him as the next Gretzky where he does and says no wrong. That's obviously not the case, especially with him being more of a dink lately, but definitely the reason we have to see him on/ in everything.

And really, that's it in a nutshell. The NHL, which has been suffering in many markets since the lockout, has been looking for someone to turn into the next Gretzky in hopes of bringing back alienated fans, and drawing in new ones. The problem is, they want someone who is from the left side of the pond, speaks English as a first language, and looks "handsome" (big purple monkey lips aside) in all their TV spots to appeal to the North American core audience. The problem is that, with the exception of the Pittsburgh faithful, the vast majority of the rest of the hockey fans out there have seen through all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Crosby to the ugly little whiny snot-nosed brat that he is. I don't make any apologies concerning Ovi because he is what he is. Russian machines don't break, they also hit hard, play a little dirty when they need to, and make stuff happen. Does Ovi leave his skates when he hits sometimes? You bet your butt he does! But he gets called for it and the fans love him because he's not afraid to jump into the fray even though he's a (relatively) smaller guy. Crosby, on the other hand, gets a pass on a lot of his dirty stuff, and then leaves it up to the rest of the team to stand up for him when he does something to deserve getting the snot kicked out of him.
Really, it comes down to him being the spoiled little brat of the NHL.
That said, what's everyone think about the Backstrom suspension? I'm calling BS. Not on the fact that he cross checked Peverly in the face (he did, obviously) but on the fact that he gets a game misconduct, but Thomas doesn't when he did virtually the same thing back in Game 2.

I think you guys covered it well enough for me.
Another thing I do not like about Crosby is the camera attention he gets during a Pens game. Watching game three of Pens/Flyers, almost every other break showed Crosby. Whistle blown? Lets show Crosby skating by. Stoppage of play? Crosby is on the bench drinking, film him!
The reason Crosby is so disliked compared to Ovechkin, is that Ovechkin isn't told to be a saint. He generally lives "a rock star" life partying and being a celebrity, and is known to play rough. But he wont act as a snob and doesn't think he is intitled to anything. Crosby is arrogant and is portrayed as the "face of hockey".

Gotta disagree with you there Chewp. I've seen this kind of stuff since the first time the Wings played the Pens in the Finals. He constantly throws cross checks, showers/runs goalies, and takes hacks at people after plays. It's not noticed if you don't watch them play because you will never, ever see a replay of it.

He's just trying to make plays.... yeah... that's what we'll get the announcers to say! He's not running on the goalie, he's just following through with the play, same with hacking at people after the puck is blown dead. He's scrabbling for goals!
I personally think Nick Backstrom makes a better "face of the NHL" than Crosby does.

Good. I'm glad Vancouver got rid of him, he's just a dumb thug now. He used to be better, but now he'll ignore the puck in favour of being able to try and injure someone instead. If you watch his last games with the Canucks he was constantly trying to land hits exactly like the one that just got him suspended, except up against the glass. I wasn't even remotely surprised to see him do something so dirty, and I'm glad he's getting booted for it.

I laughed really hard many, many times. The movie really just goes for it, it doesn't take itself too seriously at all. I can see why people said it's the next Slapshot without encroaching on the originals territory at all.
