so im thinking about leaving my job welding cans that float to welding cans that roll for A LOT more money...

im looking at 235K tax free if i weld armored vehicles vs 43k taxed welding ships...

1) i have to quit my civil service job (I have some good qualifications so i think i would get hired back in)

2) i might get shot at (i figure working nights in the neighborhood i work in is just as bad, but over there i would have body armor and an armed escort...) {thinking Afghanistan, i dont really like the idea of Iraq}

3) i couldnt come back into the USA for 1 year (or uncle sam would rob me blind)

edit: i think if i spend less than 30 days inside the USA in the calender year everything i make is tax free...

How long would it last for? Until you're not needed there anymore?

I'd do it. It'll be long, boring and isolated but everyone needs a story to tell when they're older.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Seconded. At least Iraq is somewhat calm (comparatively) to Afghanistan at the moment. March saw the lowest death toll since the war started (112 civies killed and no combat deaths for coalition forces) and there has only been 1 coalition death since the beginning of the year over there. Meanwhile, you can't even trust the people who are walking right next to you, wearing the uniform of your supposed allies, in Afghanistan. It's a scary place right now.

You're young and single... go for it. When I think back on a couple of opportunities that I had to live and work overseas I regret not doing it nearly every single time. You never know where the opportunity will lead either unless you take it.

If you are going to regret it later, then do it now. I have always looked at decisions by the "will I regret NOT doing this?"...

You don't want to look back and say "I wish I had ______".

Grab life by the horns and go for it.

My best mates dad is in Iraq just now. He started off at camp Wolf(?) working on military gear (comm's in trucks n that) and although he said a lot of the time he was bored out his nut he keeps going back for 6 months at a time. The odd rocket from the locals didn't seem to bother him too much and he has photos on Saddam's chair in the old palace and junk which is pretty awesome in itself.

He's now working as a relatively high up comms man for some oil company so it must be relatively safe if he's willing to give up the security of permanently being on base.

And he has more cash than you can shake a big jaggy pimping stick at. Which annoys me as I started working for his company as motor electrician/ communications engineer when I was younger but went and done the "sensible thing" and went back to school.  Now I would give my left bollock to go and start making some cash like that.

Do it. But take Iraq over Afghanistan. I've been to both and while I was able to utilize my skill set more in Afghanistan, they gave me a gun and bombs to do it with. The reality about being shot at in Afghanistan is that 90% it's indirect but still dangerous and 10% of the time you might actually be close enough to use your welding torch to burn a hole in their shorts. The opposite held true for me but our bases are still pretty well protected there and it depends how much time you will spend, if any, outside the wire.

Also, we aren't burning books and murdering families in Iraq.
