But I FINALLY have gotten the ball rolling on my NYS pistol permit. I was supposed to do it a few months back, I even remember starting a thread about it.
My 'in' this time is a guy I used to work with teaches a class in a neighboring county, which is acceptable for MY county. (New York is stupid- some counties require their own classes)
Some of you might be thinking "But- stupid, since you're laid off, isn't there anything better you could be spending your money on rather than this?"
Yes. Yes there is. But if I don't do something aside from worry about job hunting, resume padding, and stripping for cash at night, You'll read about me in the newspapers when I go insane.
At any rate, I've got the class tomorrow night, I've got the references lined up....the big part is going to be shelling out for the fingerprinting. Which amuses me.
- It USED to be done on paper and take several weeks to clear, since they'd wait until they had a batch of 20 or so to send out at a time. Cost used to be $90.
- Now its electronic and they know within 24 hours if you're a secret criminal. Cost has doubled.
Durp.
Oh well. With a few pieces lined up from my father in law when he retires, I need to get this damn thing straightened out and done.
In other gun-related news, ALL of my pieces from the flood have been cleaned and are functional. With the exception of my 1853 Enfield which was too long to fit in the safe. But the rest are back in action. Some of which (My smith carbine) actually works BETTER than it did before the flood. I can't explain it, but it does.

Some guns just don't like to live in a safe :)
Glad to hear most are up and running again. What's the problem with the Enfield? Didn't find it?

We found it.
....er....the bulldozer found it when it was cleaning out the stream bed.
The barrel resembles a boomerang and the stock is splintered to hell. That one really bums me out since it was the first gun I ever bought and used it for almost 15 years reenacting. Ah well. The fun is in the collecting right?

From what I'm told it could take anywhere from 2 months on for them to process the application for the permit and do the background check. Things have sped up some since the implementation of the electronic systems. Most only take a few months, but every now and then a judge will pull the permit request and be a pain in the rear about it.
One woman I know took almost a year to get hers, the judge came in to justify her 'need' for one- which was simply to be able to own her husband's guns after he died.
So how long it could ACTUALLY take....I don't know.

In ny you need a permit just to buy...to carry you need to prove that you have someone threatening your life every step of the way..,unless your hunting (sportsman permit) in which case you are able to carry while you're hunting.

Not quite. There's only three permits in (most of) NY.
Employment Premise Carry
Employment one people get if they need a gun for their work. Problem is, if the job ends, the permit's no good anymore. Premise, you're allowed to own on your own property....legally, you can't take it from the gun shop to your home. I I think you can transport it to a range to shoot, but that's it. Carry is everything else. the overwhelming majority of the ones issued in the state are carry permits. Even if you want to hunt with it- you need a carry permit. There's no grades or levels of the carry permit. It is....or it isn't.
This is info from the guy whose teaching the course. We've had long discussions about what I should apply for once I get the paperwork in place. I'm going for carry. It covers everything.
The thing is, that anything I get issues is NO good in three downstate counties. NYC, one of the LI counties, and a third one...I can't remember which one. They've got their own thing and if I want to carry down there, its a whole separate thing that's near to impossible to get. That might be that you were referring to.

If it makes you feel better, I pretty much have to be put on al Al Quida hit list in order to be eligible for a CCW.
I'm also subject to one pistol a month, and each pistol needs its own purchase permit.

NY is some what the same. You have to purchase the pistol, take the receipt to the pistol lic. bureau where they give you a purchase permit and enter the serial number of the pistol on your license. Then you go back to the dealer, give him one copy of the pistol purchase permit and then you get the pistol. You then have 10 days to go back to the PLB and they inspect the pistol to ensure that it is indeed the pistol you have purchased and verify the serial number of the pistol. How is that for for legalized jimmie rustling?

Wow man. When I bought my Sig used from Gander Mountain it took me about 30 minutes and I was toting it home, most of that was paperwork, the background check took like 10 minutes. I never realized how lucky I had it. This is Virginia though...

Tell me about it! Now with my C&R, I don't even have to wait for background checks to clear if I'm dealing with eligible firearms. Payment = shipped to my door!

And you're from down there on the Island right? Maybe you know what counties a state permit is no good in. I can't recall.
NY is a huge ball-busting state for pistols. I forget what the fee is for adding a pistol to the permit too- but you pay for that too.
pay for the mandatory 5 hr course pay for the application pay for the fingerprinting pay for the pistol pay to add it to the permit
I'm sure I'm skipping something, but all you're doing is shelling out, JUST so you can shoot a pistol. Now you know why I was such a rifle shooter for so long.

Ok, being former military I am exempt from a safety course. I taught basic marksmanship for pistol and rifle (M16A2, M1911 and M9). I also was active shooting competition with service rifle. However, each county has it's own set of guidelines/rules before issuing a pistol permit. Nassau County requires an interview while Suffolk ( where I live) does not. NYC? fahgedaboutit, you are not getting a pistol permit while Mad Mike is King of NYC.

Yeah, I knew about NYC.
And the different counties requiring different things is also something I was told to look into- but apparently, my county is pretty relaxed. The class I'm taking tonight is through Albany County, but I live in Greene. I called the Sheriff's office for my county and asked if:
A: It was accepted for us B: if there was another piece of paperwork that needed to be done since I was going to a different county for the class.
The deputy I talked to was pretty cool. "Nah, as long as the guy's an NRA instructor and you get the card, we'll take it."
