Back in March, I picked up a 1984 Honda Civic CRX for $600. It was running at the time, but died on the way home. Before I bought it, I found out it had a bent header caused by the timing belt snapping and hitting it. It had also been buried in snow taller than it for a year. When it died, we were going uphill (friend and I. someone had to drive the other car home.) and I heard a loud bang, a loud crack, and rattling. The engine had shot a rod and eaten a piston. So the next day, my car was towed to my friend's (has an area where I can work on my car) and has been there since. Note: I am still rather new to cars, so my friends will be helping me with the engine (just waiting on a 'new' rebuilt engine.) The first week I striped out the old interior and threw it out, and the inside has been bare until recently. Yesterday, I put in a 'new' interior I grabbed from an '87 CRX SI. I also grabbed the doors and will be going back for a few more parts later on.
Black spot on top is just a piece of rubber.
hood is slightly open due to the mechanism dying. Will be replaced with pins.
both doors look like this right now.
I'm not sure how, but 2 owners ago, the guy managed to spill something sticky under the carpet. Now my frame is sticky.
Yes, that is a stick holding the hatch open.
The black rubber started melting at one point, so I had to scrape a bunch of goop out of there. Unfortunately, that mess is a huge improvement.
Dead engine is still in there. I have some friends doing the engine work for me since I'm still learning. Rebuilt engine will be put in at a later date.
speedo reads 184,525.4
Not sure how the interior managed to get wrecked, yet the climate control face plate remains flawless...
Pile of parts from the interior.
That's what is left of my piston. The piece separated from the rest is the biggest piece we could find.

Yes. I know it's a piece right now, but I don't care. I needed something to do with my spare time, and a project car sounded right.

For now, I'm just putting in another Honda inline 4. Later on, I may swap for an Integra V6 or a 240 small block V8, depending on if my frame can handle the torque. I had a friend who threw a 340 long block in his and it twisted his frame. I was planning on wrapping my old, blue trim, as well as accenting the tan/beige trim with royal blue vinyl and keeping the black trim the way it is. As for the exterior, I'm currently planning on royal purple. No, I don't want any stupid 'ricer' body kits or anything like that. But the way things are going, she should be up and running in ~2 weeks or less, weather permitting. As for the parts I still need to pick up, I'm getting a black dash, the trim that goes on the hatch, bumpers and a new grille.

Id say if you plan on doing that much id throw a nice lip on it and some suspension goodies and have some fun with it.

Looking much better. I would say get it painted because a matching paint job can definitely make it look much better. But I'm sure that would be more money than it is worth.

This makes me want to dig into my 2 projects... Recently picked up a 94 chevy k1500 for $750. It has a rebuilt motor with 4k on the clock, new brake drums/rotors and a brand new battery.

Ex girlfriends mom had one of these back when I was in HS. Depresses me to see cars that I remember seeing new on the lot in this condition. I always liked the nex gen of these better, but these were fun little cars.

Update time. The car was moved to a mechanic's shop last Monday. I found out on Thursday that a re-manufactured engine would cost $2300 alone and with labor, it would cost $3k+. So now, I'm keeping the CRX as a project car in my back yard. Today I went out and bought a 1991 Civic Hatchback
There's my dad in the background.

I have a friend who has a Civic like that. Ungodly slow and to put it nicely... I find it unattractve. Quirky car though, feels like a gokart. IIRC if I sit in the passenger seat my knees are higher than the dashboard.

and drop a crappy sound system from Walmart into it. Be sure to rev your engine at red lights a roll back and forth until the light turns green. I really hope it's a standard.

| Absolutely not. I hate the ricer look and sound. If anything, I'm going for a quieter exhaust. Actually, it came with a Kenwood radio and a bazooka amp. Yes, standard 4-speed which I plan on changing to a 5-speed.

You forgot to mention some non-white foglights. Blue, Purple, and Yellow seem popular by me.
I also find it slightly amusing that many Canadians call manual transmissions "standard". Only because I was talking to a girl from Ottawa in highschool and she mentioned something about a standard transmission and I had no idea what she was talking about.

Going to be taking it to the mechanic to see if it's fixable or not. If so, then I have a daily driver again. If not, I'm stripping it for parts and sending the rest to the junk yard or crusher.

I think if the quarters are bowed, its junk. Not sure what you have into it, but I can't imagine it being fixable for cheap. I think the broken rear window alone might be worth more than the car.... no offense.

God almighty. I haven't chirped in on this forum for a while, but some of you might remember my name.
Anyways dude, i don't know what you're thinking, but both of those were
nightmares from the start. I know a fair share about cars (I own a jeep
myself, and frequently work on it and make it better), and i wouldn't of
bought either of those. Just to let you know the point of a "project
car" is to fix it yourself. That doesn't mean bring it to a mechanic and
spend 5x what you spent on the car for the engine alone. You need to FIX IT YOURSELF. That's the fun in it, you learn how to rebuild the engine, and you have fun along the way. I'm not "busting on you" in anyway, i'm just simple saying do not spend that much money on that car.
Get a jeep, and work on that. Spare parts are cheap and readily available, and they go just about anywhere.

Decided I'd see if I'd keep my next car for a while before updating.
So, about a week after I bought the rice box, some idiot made a left in front of me when I had no chance to slow down. Everyone is fine. My airbag deployed, but I did not need it. His insurance covered everything, as he was at fault. Have some funny pics.
Kept the car, sold it for parts. Engine still ran.
So about 2 weeks after the accident, I bought this for $1900.
No tears or rips on the seats.
Reads 184,581 (reads about 197,xxx at this point. sorry for the camera phone pics)
Cargo cover.
No rips/tears and only minor blemishes
Sun roof works perfectly.
