Been looking into getting a smart phone basically to be able to check email on. I still have a flip phone which works, but its becoming a hassle and doesn't have decent internet and can't check my email from it...not really looking into it for the entertainment aspect, i think most any phone would suffice in that department for my needs. Any recommendations? Not looking to go crazy on price or anything, but it's looking like that will be an issue with any smart phone.

I would recommend the iPhone. Droids have a bad tendency to screw up big time after a few months and it gets worse when they do a software up date.

Not exactly true... I have had my Galaxy SII for almost a year now and I've updated the OS and it works better than before.

But really, if you are looking for a phone just for email and light entertainment just wait like a couple of months for the new iPhone to come out.

Personal experience, between myself, my wife, my parents and some friends. As for having a web link or such no.

Might be the phone maker also. My wife and I both had Droid 2s and they started to do what they wanted after a few months. Randomly sending text messages twice, keyboard(both hard and touch screen) would stop responding ect. My folks had Droid 1s and after a few months when ever talking to my mom it would randomly press keys while next to her face (the touch screen is suppose to turn off when held up to you ear) plus other random stuff.

I got cnet for all of my phone review needs, and if you can't find a review for a specific model there generally there are a few mobile review sites that give good, unbiased info out there (can't think of the names off the top of my head).

If you really and truly don't care about apps / entertainment and just want an e-mail / phone device I'd be willing to bet whatever smart phone your cell company is giving away for free will work. I'm with AT&T and they were giving away some Droids with new contracts / renews last time I check.

If you suddenly decide that you need something that does every thing well, you can't go wrong with an iPhone in my opinion. I'll probably switch to Droid next time around just for variety, but I've bought 6 iPhones (most destroyed due to user error...tossed in the lake, for example) plus just bought an iPad 3 and I've found that, as much as I dislike the lack of user customization, it's tought to get away from iOS once you get hooked.

Honestly, I find the android platform to be better supported than the iPhone. Apple has a horrible habit of discontinuing support for their phones after 6-9 months and then letting you sit there with what equates to a brick that takes calls and plays music, but doesn't do much else because the updates to the OS have overloaded the capabilities of the older phones.

Android, on the other hand, is much, much better at supporting older platforms.

Also, smartphones are about to get dirt cheap once the Google/Motorola buyout takes shape. Google is planning on developing their own hardware and software and then selling direct to consumer for cheaper than subsidized prices. It'll be the nail in the iPhone coffin if done right.

I upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus from the original Moto Droid.  Slick 4G LTE phone with Android 4.0.2 OS goodness.

Nah. Every carrier now-a-days has a smartphone offered for free with a two-year contract and data plan. Usually the "better" deals for that are online.

Right now it looks like Sprint's is the Samsung Conquer 4G. AT&T is the LG Phoenix (Or the HTC Status, but that doesn't seem like your thing). Verizon has a number of them, the big two being the LG Enlighten or the Droid Pro.

That's just online, though. Physical stores for all the companies also often keep a stock of older smartphones around just for giving away for free to customers signing 2-year deals or upgrading from an existing contract. Not only that, they normally can be persuaded into dropping or reducing the upgrade fee.

No, the free ones are not current-gen versions. They're often not even top-of-the-line from their generation. They're normally running on less ram, less internal storage, smaller screen, etc. But if you're looking to have the functions of a smart phone like Internet and e-mail, but want to save yourself some cash, I'd go with that. Walk into a store, ask what they've got free for signing a contract, make sure you like how it feels, and go.

I ran a Droid X2 for over a year and it never gave me any serious trouble at all. The iPhone interface is simpler to be sure, but having run both, I liked the droid better to to be honest, although I didn't ever get my hands on the 4S iPhone to be able to judge that one.

I've got a blackberry Torch 9810. It is amazing...

The camera shoots GREAT pictures, and it records video in 720HD. Web sites work well on it, and it has tons of apps. Plus the screen is strong enough that I've had it for about 6 months, and not a scratch on it.  (I think it is gorilla glass)

While this is more true than for droid, it's over a timeframe of years, not months. That's a huge exaggeration.

I had an HTC Inspire for about 4 months, then switched carriers and got the iPhone 4S.  I found the droid to be much easier to navigate due to it have 4x the number of permanent function buttons.  The iPhone has far superior battery life, but is also a much smaller phone.  I didn't do much email on the HTC, but on my iPhone, it is pretty outstanding.  The droid had better ringtone options.

Thing I don't like about the blackberry is the small screen (for a smart phone), the keyboard, and this may just be me going crazy but every time I get a butt dial its from a blackberry.

Been looking into the razr, seems to be the biggest issue people have is the battery life...which is pretty important to me...any ideas?

I dunno about that since both have the option of adding your own ring tones. Along with the iTunes store. Heck the iPhone has a free app where you can cut your music file to make your own right on it. Little but of a pain but you get exactly what you want in just a couple of minutes.

Yeah I was wondering about that too.... How can it have "better" ringtones when both just let you add your own?

You can go a few days on an iPhone if you don't use it excessively.  At the end of the day, I'm usually sitting at 80% charge.  I also don't get any service in my office though.

Personally I own a Galaxy S2. And am reasonably happy with it.

However I do NOT like the touch screen interface. I'd much prefer something with a keyboard, even if it is a Nokia N8 style keyboard. The touch screen is both too sensitive and not sensitive enough to type reliably IMHO.

The Swype function works ok, but it still isn't great. The T-9 predictive text and correction is horrid as well. With previous versions if you send a message with the word would be picked up. You have to insert it in the lastest version, and it will default to it's preferred correction over your typing, even if you have typed in a 16 letter word. I haven't made 15 errors in typing "Hi" you stupid bloody phone.

Hopefully this touch screen craze will die off soon.

I also have issues with the S2's battery life. The screen CHOWS battery and the auto sense brightness is really bad.

under 2 years does not make "years" That's how long it was between the launch of the iPhone 3G and the forced upgrade to iOS4 which bricked it.

Even then, their lack of support for even their high end computer systems is notorious. MS is STILL releasing updates for XP and will do so until August of 2014. That's 13 frikken years of support! Find me a release of an apple OS with that much support since the IIe and I'll eat my hat.

Battery life is the number one complaint/problem with every single Android/Apple/Windows smartphone on the market right now. Almost every phone review talks about the less-than-stellar battery.

It's just a point of reality with smartphones. Heavy use of phone and apps and you won't make it through the day. Too much power running on rather small batteries to keep the physical size of the phone down.

Charge every night while you sleep and invest in at least a car charger and one other wall charger to keep at work.

I'd stay away from BlackBerry.

RIM is in dire financial straits, so support becomes a questionable issue. Their OS underperforms compared to the other big two. Their app store is bare compared to Google Play and the Apple app store. Their Internet has largely fallen behind as well.

I used to be a loyal BlackBerry user, but they've just not gotten their products up with the time. The messenger system they have is nice, but it's pretty much the only thing they've got left.

Probably not. It's harder and harder to purchase a physical keyboard phone now-a-days. I've pretty much braced myself that when I buy a new phone in 2.5 years I'm probably not going to have a physical keyboard to pick from.

Right now I've got the Samsung Captivate Slide:

When I was shopping in November, it was the only slide-out keyboard current-generation smartphone AT&T offered. Everything else was touchscreen only.

You clearly haven't used the new blackberries...

The torch is sweet, has a keyboard and a fairly large screen (they also have a non keyboard model with a huge screen). The touch screen works really well, and it is a powerhouse, 1.2ghz processor that lets you run multiple things at the same time. By far the best smart phone I have used. And the call quality is great, and you can open files on email like .pdfs and stuff.

I'm not a fan of big phones like the iphone as they are just too big for my taste, my torch is perfect. It fits in my pocket well, and if you stay off the world series poker game, the battery life will last all day. (that game DRAINS the battery)

No, Whale makes some good points, I wouldnt touch RIM with a 10 foot pole right now. If you're more business, they might still make sense, but there is no way I'd be handing them money right now.

Also the touch screen fad wont go away, they will just get immensely better. Gorilla glass has already stepped it up again in terms of durability this year, and check this out:

Don't care about durability, still prefer the tactile feedback of the keypad. I can touch type a keypad. The touch screens, ironically, require me to look at them.

It's so bad I bought a BT mini keyboard. That was a waste of money as it is a really bad keyboard, but if I can find a decent one....

Thats because feedback is important, and so far the best thing touch screens have is a beep and a vibration, both of which are terrible. Sensegg and other technology will make touch screens much, much better soon.

Save the physical keyboard (Which is now more niche production in Android-carrying hardware), everything you named can be found in pretty much any stable smartphone company's product in the store right now. Large screen. Good processor. Multiple program task managing. Ability to open and edit .pdfs and other attachments. Stuff they've had for a long while now.

It'd be like selling a 2013-model car by advertising it had power windows and air conditioning. For a smartphone, that's old hat.

What that doesn't talk about is the lack of updates to the OS, lack of a populated applications store, wonky Internet browser, and financially questionable ownership. Stuff that makes for a longer-lasting phone.

I'll give you that. The new OS is good, and Swype IS better. I still prefer a keyboard.

One problem I have is the T9 auto correction. I just haven't gotten used to it yet.

In the message it'll show what you've typed, but on the correction screen it'll highlight what IT wants to use. Unless you select the original word you typed if you press space or start Swyping a new word it inserts the word IT wanted.

However it lacks all forms of context understanding. It is like those bad Iphone messages. "Hi, going to the range, taking the 870, the M4 and getting my ass raped". Gee thanks phone. Because that is way better than "aks zeroed" like I typed.

I've found Swype way more accurate with big words rather than small words.

Posted By: Kayback

Yeah, but that stands to reason, there are fewer interpritations of that series of movements than there will be with shorter words. If you move a finger and it covers 9 letters for a 3 letter word or you cover 17 for a 15 letter word.....

I enjoyed the T-9 on the Nokia N98 I last had. It actually WORKED. If it didn't have the word you wanted it didn't put in it's own thing. The one in this phone will display what I'm typing and wanting to say in the main screen but highlight a completely different word on the selection screen.

MOST annoying. I have since turned it off and the readability of my messages has improved about a gajillion* percent.

Has anyone tried a Windows phone? I've played with them a few times and they are AWESOME. They were a little late to the market, but they are starting to catch on. The UI is fantastic!

I always think it's best to pick a phone based on what tech 'ecosystem' you use at home. It just makes life easier.
Get an iPhone if you have Apple products all over your house (it will sync with every other Apple device, which is nice)
Get an Android if you use a LOT of Google products (Google Apps suite, you live off of Gmail, etc.)
Or get a Windows phone (don't shoot me please)

I have a Samsung Focus. One of the first Windows Phones on AT&T. I still absolutely love it. The UI is very clean and forward thinking. The app situation isn't as good as Android and Apple, but it's not awful. I can do everything I want to on the phone.

That actually looks like a pretty good app!

Another great one is this one: http://bit.ly/wyVON2" rel="nofollow - http://bit.ly/wyVON2

Google Sky Map. You use your phone to show the current position of the heavens. Its great if you're looking up at the night sky and have no clue what planets or stars you're looking at - plus it has a neat little time travel option so you can go back in time to see what the sky looked like back at any date you want.

Skymaps rocks. We don't even rate as amature star gazers yet it is a very very helpful program. Wish the sattelite tracking was improved. If you are into star gagazing then the Meteor shower app is also good.

For the S2 specifically Smooth Calander is very nice.

Yes. The Droid Razr Maxx... it's the Razer, with the largest smartphone battery stock. 3300mah.

I have it. I go from unplugging at 8am, till 1am the next day. 4-5 hours of screen time (screen is biggest battery hog) with a lot of game play, texting, and 4g web surfing, and get home with about 20%+ of the battery left, without charging it during the day.

The Maxx's reviews on its battery are phenomenal (for a smartphone)

You know, if they just had the spam filter check sentence syntax, we wouldn't have these issues.
