Inexcusable ratings grab comes to mind.

What is a fox news? Is it something like a rabbit snare?
Sometimes with things like mouse traps and such the tension can be set rather high and delayed reactions can be expected.
Cnn sucks equally as well.
The single media beer bong that everyone drinks from has to be infested with highly contactable diseases.

I don't think it was done intentionally. Not defending a news station I never watch (I avoid cable news like the plague)but my mom DVR'd it so I could come over and watch it after work and I think that Shepard Smith genuinely did not want the ending aired.
That said, let's look at it from a completely different viewpoint-should the news be censored? Full Metal Jacket showed a graphic suicide way back in the early 80's with full on brain splatter, but we still censor the news.
Now me, I don't think car chases qualify as news. But if you own a news company and you're of the persuasion that car chases = good journalism then stick it out to the end. Otherwise when you censor the suicide you take away the element of the disturbed individual and it becomes a PG-13 car chase scene that everyone feels okay with watching for sheer entertainment.
That's the real underlying issue here-if you show the graphic material people feel bad for being entertained by the carnage.

They showed the suspect from the Hollywood Bank Shooting, commit suicide on live tv.
Violence is only ok to show on tv, if it's fiction?

One of the baseball bloggers always tweets when a chase is on TV, I flipped over to FNC about 10 seconds after it happened. Had no idea what he was apologizing for when they came back until I went back and scrolled up on twitter.

I was watching Fox as this occured yesterday. There really was no direct warning the man was about to shoot himself, it just sort of happened. Why their 5 second delay wasn't able to catch this before it aired on national television I'm not sure, but even still, I'm not going to pass critical judgement onto Fox for this one.

In the apology he said it was kind of the equivalent of when you accidentally lose the buffer on your DVR. So, when it happened, they hadn't had a chance to regain the buffer, and the situation went bad too fast to be caught. Really, it came out of nowhere. Dude was running, and then just stop. Boom. Keel over. It probably would have been close even WITH the buffer.

My buddy was watching it live. I don't really have an opinion on the matter.
Dude was obviously freaking out, no cars around, just the chopper, running and frantic enough to trip over basically nothing. Suicide probably wasn't the best way out of that one.

I was just wondering why this lead to apologies, when one dirtbag offed himself instead of trying to shoot it out with cops, but international coverage of people jumping from the World Trade Centers to avoid burning to death didn't.

Quite honestly that was the most shocking thing about the footage of 9/11 for me. The death, destruction and buildings collapsing was interesting TV, but seeing people make that decision and jump still gives me a hollow feeling in my stomach.
Watching this guy shoot himself didn't even make me bat an eyelid. A good end that others should copy IMHO.

Honestly, the mental health of North America is deteriorating IMHO. My sister had a close friend commit suicide about 6 months ago, my friend's sister offed herself with chemicals in a car, if it weren't for my aunt and uncle doing CPR my cousin would have died after he tried hanging himself in front of my aunt about a month ago, and a 17 year old shot and killed himself in the basement of his own house about 2 weeks ago. It's been a particularly bad year for suicides and it doesn't seem like its stopping. More and more people are choosing to take their own lives despite having the highest standard of living in the world.

^Sauce? I'm not sure whether it's an actual increase in number of suicides, versus more frequent reporting of an already fairly common event. I don't have the data either way, I'd just be curious to know.

There is an awful lot of kids that graduated high school around the same time as I did (2009) that are dead right now. Sad stuff.

I would as well. I'd imagine some of it is an increase of coverage.
For the longest time, suicide wasn't really covered in the media. It was considered insensitive to report on a suicide if the family didn't want it covered, or if the suicide wasn't done in a public way (Someone jumping from a building downtown, for example).
I wonder if it's just more exposure now.

I know next to nothing about this subject but I've always wondered if suicide rates are a reliable indicator of psychological trends on a mass scale.
By that I mean if x amount of people committed suicide in x month of last year but then y amount of people committed sucidie in x month of this year and that's tied in to a simultaneous event (economic woes, time of war, etc) is the correlative relationship between those two relevent? Is there even a way to know that?
Again, not that I would know, just curious.

I believe there was a study done that showed that the uptick in marital problems is linked to the collapse of the economy.in the psychological sense that because the economy is bad our relationship is bad. It's a dog chasing it's own tail question.

That's essentially what I'm curious about here.
Just because two things are related doesn't mean that they're causative of one another. It seems like suicide is too complex of a subject to simply condense down into a generalized statistic.

I remember a while back that the Army was concerned because suicide rates were rising towards the standard population rates. Not that they were out of control, bu because they were closer to the, for lack of a better word, expected numbers.

There are too many concrete variables to make any viable psychological correlation regarding marital problems with society as a whole. Speaking to the study that I heard.

There is no way it is 18-30 a day among AD military
Maybe you misinterpreted the numbers, or how they we're presented, but this year had an abnormally high rate for the military, when it was approaching 29 Per 100,000 per year.(which IS a very high percentage, but it's not 18-30 a day) Source: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/military/story/2012-08-09/army-suicides/57096238/1
Now, maybe the article you read was intentionally skewing te numbers, and took AD, NG, IR, and retired vets and lumped ALL the suicides together over a short sample period to fit their agenda, but that's not the proper way to look at suicide numbers. Our military is simply TOO large to look at it as a lump sum of members.

I've worked more suicides this year than in the past (With a large potion being between March and July). Hopefully it's just an anomaly. It also hit closer to home when a good friend opted out this year. It changed my perspective on the matter.

Thats an understatement lol. Its not fun watching the family of the loved one literally crumble to the ground in the hospital waiting room after hearing that their son had a large possibility of permanent brain damage.

I've always had a very low opinion of anyone who takes that way out. Your life is hard? Show me someone's who isn't.
Ending real suffering is different, but boo hoo woe is me stuff? Whatever.
My ex's baby brother, who I actually liked a bunch and thought was a great guy, killed himself. It hasn't changed my perspective. I now need to be a little more circumspect as to what I say, but I still don't have any sympathy for him.
If you need help, grow a pair and ask for it. Suicide is the ultimate F-U to those you leave behind, and it messes them up even more.
There are enough good people dying unfairly before their time for me to give a rats ass to someone who takes that way out.
