I'm pretty sure this one's Obama's fault, I'll bet he planned this one to cement votes right before an election somehow.
The mainstream media seems to be ignoring that possibility though.

At any rate, I don't know what you all are expected to get where you are, but the people in my town are FREAKING OUT.
They were bulls-eyed by Irene last year, and with the damages, loss of property and life, there's already not a case of water to be found in town.

If facebook is to be believed (is it ever?) we're supposed to get apocalyptic snow fall, more rain than Irene, and probably a rain of fire falling from the sky. Truth be told, I haven't seen any official projections for the storm yet since its early- but everyone's expecting the worst, which isn't bad because a bit of preparation never hurt anyone.

I've got a couple of concerns though- Where I live isn't in a danger zone, we're up a hill and didn't even see water in the Garage during Irene. I'm a bit worried about the infrastructure around town. After Irene, there was significant foot-dragging to replace bridges and washed out roads, and most of what was done has a slap-dash, temporary feel to it, to the point where if we do get any volume of water, even if its less than Irene's rainfall, the repairs will be gone in no time, trapping residents on some of our dead-end areas, and there's plenty of those.

The other thing is that the emergency services department of my county has been puckered up since Irene. A few weeks ago, we got a full day of rain, and they panicked, and scrambled every fire department in the county to stand by their stations in case there was any weather related emergencies. There were none, at all. We didn't even get called to pump out a basement. I'm going to be pissed if they do it again, since I'm between a rock and a hard place with the newborn. I don't want to leave the family if there's no emergency, but I also don't want to NOT go in case there's evacuations that need to be done like there were last time.

All in all, I'm hoping this stupid thing fizzles out, but I'll be spending the weekend putting in a stock of some non-perishables just in case. Like I said- being prepared never killed anyone right?

Are any of you on the East Coast expecting anything severe? Taking steps yet?

From what I've read this storm could turn bad if the cold pressure system that's moving towards it and the hurricane mix together and form a really nasty system. I'm a bit concerned about it because of the wide area it covers. Stay safe and take care of your family and neighbors.

As I said on teh bookface: I have a chainsaw, gas, an artesian well, and a Subaru, I'm good.

Seriously though. Stocking up on non-perishable goods (soup, etc) firewood, and whatnot. I also had to explain to my wife that while she could still use the bathroom and take a shower if the power was out, she still needed to conserve water so we don't back up the septic system (effluent pump runs on electricity after all)

Looks like its going to pass just north of us, as of right now. Which is cool, since I'll be down at the coast for an interview on Monday. Either way, hurricanes don't bother me too much. They're something we just have to grit our teeth and bear through for most of the state every few years. Some of the outer banks can get it hard every once in a while though.

We're not supposed to get hit until Monday. That's plenty of time for people to go through initial panic and loot grocery stores.

We need to blame Bush and quick...............it is all his fault, not supporting Kyoto, Gloabel Warming, the weather machine hidden at his ranch in Texas. With the Obama numbers falling need something to get the left wing nutjobs motivated. Obama's press secretary is hard at work with then initial draft.

Nature does not have an agenda political or otherwise, storms happen, prepare, stop reacting people.

Lets see got my 3500watt generator, 300gal fresh water, food stocks for 30days (even dog food), live up on a hill (bad here in tornado country), root cellar has enough room for family and dogs, pretty comfy, battery and crank SW radio, base station CB and FRS, yep we are set for weather, and or the zombie apocolypse whichever come first.

I'm on the fence as to where i stick it out, I can stay in the 'burbs and enjoy gravity-fed water, or run to the hills and get worse flash flooding (and good fishing) and still get  gravity-fed spring water. In New England our major concerns are stocking up on beer and batteries. We are used to a few day w/o power ever year anyways, so gas is the major issue.

I'm not expecting much but I'm preparing for the worst (packed my bags in case of those "oh crap we have to leave now" moments). Also bought some water, and basic supplies in case we have to wait it out.
I live less than a mile away from the Mystic River, the Charles River, and the Atlantic ocean...so flooding is a huge possibility.
Thankfully, my neighborhood is up on a hill....wish me luck.

Schools in the area are pulling the plug early. Still no official estimate on the sort of weather we're supposed to be getting, aside from severe winds. Rain estimates have literally been everywhere between "6 inches in 3 days" and "As bad or worse than Irene." And Irene was 21" in less than a day.

My chief has us manning the firehouse 24/7 for the next few days, no particular shift schedule, but whenever we can get there for a few hours, we're going to make sure we're staffed.

We've put away enough fire wood for 3-4 days conservatively. Stocked up on soup, ramen, pb&j and mac & cheese. Chainsaw is gassed and oiled, cars are filled up, have extra cash in the safe and the shotgun and pistol are loaded in case we get an event on the scale of Evil Elvis' experience. Downstairs tub is already filled with H2O and will fill the upstairs one tomorrow after we take our showers. Our well feeds enough water artesianaly for us to get enough to drink and cook with, but not enough to keep flushing toilets and washing dishes with, so we're making sure we can take a dump without it turning into an outhouse situation.

Luckily the septic system is passive effluent discharge, so no pump to go offline there. I'll be breaking out the camp stove and dutch oven if we lose power. Good luck everyone. Hope you and your families make it through alright and with everything intact.

We actually made preparations here in Detroit. We won't see anything severe, but we are planning on lots of rain. If we get a heavy downpour for more than 4-5 minutes straight, our sump can't keep up, and out truck well starts filling with water. So does my office.

We don't have a generator- but the guy across the street (our only neighbor) is working on a local construction project (huge dam rebuild) and today he comes home towing one of those generator trailers with lights, like you see on highway road work projects. He offered us up usage of it if we need it, and it should be more than ample to do what we need to.

I'm going to be getting hit directly in less than 24 hours or so. I'm not really concerned with anything, as my town really doesn't flood and I live on a hill anyway. Worst thing that could happen is a tree could hit my house/truck or another mineshaft could collapse.

As for "prepping", I filled up all of the cars and made sure to assemble all of the flashlights and such. I can't find any D batteries for anything though. If the power goes out, I'll still have hot/cold water and gas for the stove. I have enough food for a few weeks or so. I have a small Harbor Freight generator that will power a few basic things.

Last halloween the northeast got hit with that blizzard which left me without power for a week or more. That was crap. I learned to fill up my truck this time.

She's tracking south of me at the moment, a couple of brief power outages- but NYC is getting butt-slammed.
I did a shift at the firehouse a little while ago, and the weather was literally doing nothing. No rain, no wind. As soon as I get home, the wind gusts are pretty intense outside.
Wife set up camp in the living room in case the power goes out we can corral both the kids in there comfortably. I don't think we're going to get battered much worse than this, since we're just getting a kick from the tail, but I don't know what tomorrow's supposed to bring.

Reb, my family is on Long Island and they said they're not getting rain yet, just tons of wind knocking over trees. Their block is one of the only ones that lost power, due to a downed tree hitting a powerline. A few miles from them though the streets are all flooded, up in Port Jeff just north of where they live there was like feet of water in the streets. The lower east side of NYC is getting killed, more areas with feet of water flowing down the road.

I hope everyone is alright up there. Kind of nervous for them.

Yeah... We did.

The coastal areas in NY and NJ got destroyed. In all honesty, there is nothing left in a lot of places and a lot of other places there are a lot of issues. Gas shortages, looting, etc. It's getting bad.

I live in North Jersey and I've been without power since Monday which isn't a huge deal. It is annoying and I'm going crazy but I'm fine. Around here there are major gas lines and in some places looting. There were a lot of things wrecked by falling trees and such.

I've personally seen the destruction in Staten Island and it's really some god awful stuff. It's genuinely the saddest stuff I've ever seen. I'll go into detail later.

On the eve of my brand new commute to work....they're pulling gasoline resources from my area and relocating them downstate. My in-laws are an hour north of the city cant get gasoline. I understand the need to get generators powered up, but it may grind things to a halt up here- especially considering its a 20 mile drive for groceries in this area.

I have friends  who are incensed that when upstate areas were destroyed by Irene last year, there was a major 'shrug' from down that way, minimized because "It didn't hit the city" and we were forced to make our own way through it with some nominal help.
You know what though? I'm not really bothered by it. Its two different worlds there and here. Losing power here and there have different implications, PLUS the time of year was different. We didn't have to worry about heating to stay alive, they do. Am I annoyed that I'll probably have to limp into a gas station an hour north of here to put gas in the car, probably at inflated costs? A bit, but not enough to complain about it.

I can't get down there with some of the county volunteer firefighters who are going to help, (babies, new job, etc...) so if I need to spend a few extra bucks this week to fuel up so some old lady can have generated power, fine.

You'd be amazed at how many people aren't thinking that way around here though. Its sort of sad. We're quick to take NYC money during the tourist season, but apparently giving a bit back is cause for consternation.

You know, I've never understood why upstate has never divested itself of Manhattan and LI or vice versa. It really is two completely different worlds, two completely different sets of political methods, etc. You'd still have the suburbs pulling in tax money from the City, but by now let the 5 boroughs just form their own little state and keep their corruption out of your government?

Back in the mid 1800's my home state took advantage of the secession of VA from the union to split, but the real reason was that we were marginalized in VA political realms and infrastructure development. I'd think there were similar disparities between the city and anything north of LI or west of the Hudson.

Rofl_Mao, it's really hit or miss weather it will affect the election. I think less people are heading to the polls but overall things won't be swayed. Sad to say but most people are pretty polarized this election it seems.

People seem more angry with local Officials and the Red Cross and such. Using Staten Island as an Example, people effing hate bloomberg the mayor of nyc for really not doing anything. All of the support out there is private donors, and churches and the like. The community turnout there is amazing, it's the kind of people you dream about living by. Even prior to the mess they were some of the most welcoming and nicest people I've ever met, snooki guido accents and all.

It seems like most of North Jersey is okay. Power outages, gas lines, gas rationing, etcetera but overall most people's homes didn't get wrecked by trees or something. A lot of things are beginning to reopen, but a lot are still without power.

The coastal areas... Not so much. The island that 'jersey shore' was on is pretty much destroyed. The public isn't allowed on the island and it could be uninhabitable for a year. I wasn't able to get on it, but assume everything has to be rebuilt. As I said before, I was cleaning out my cousins house on Staten Island, where the Atlantic Ocean decided to move into her home. The area there is destroyed, with a lot of homes got flooded and had the sewer back up into them. I even saw a house that got ripped off of its foundation, and cars and random things get thrown around. Now it's mostly people there cleaning out their own homes and waiting for fema or insurance to rebuild. I'll describe it better when I get to a computer.

I've oft wondered the same thing myself, and nobody's given me a satisfactory answer. One of the big reasons I can think of is that upstate NY hosts the water supply for NYC, and they actually own massive chunks of land up here. If NYC left, the 'upstate' state would be split up and divided along waterways, both main and tributaries all throughout the area. If there was to be a split, we would have to buy up that land, and rent it back to them later on, and that would never be allowed to happen. Not with the might of the city being what it is.
