HMS Bounty the replica made for the 1962 movie as well as a sailing museum ship sank off North Carolina due to Sandy. Question Hurricane, why was she out to sea? Two crew still missing.

I have been on her several times, was actually at one time considering being volunteer crew for a season. It is a loss that can not be replaced, and a shame.

OS, it's common practice to put ships out to sea to ride out a hurricane rather than stay at dock. Out to sea you have a fighting chance, moored, you're getting bashed against the pier/breakwater etc. It's actually safer out to sea during a hurricane than at port. C'mon ground pounder, even the most basic squid knows that! ;)

The navy put the entire atlantic fleet out to see to ride it out. That is pretty basic.

Sad to hear about the missing crew, but yeah, I'm only a civilian pleasure sailor and I know that. ;)

Luckily, I got to see the HMS Bounty back in highschool on a class trip. It was definitely one of the coolest vessels I've had the pleasure to see. Sad day.

I ain't no sailor, comman sense states land is good, water in storm, wet and bad. Stuff sinks, you float for awhile till somebody stumbles upon you or you are fish food.

Kinda figure that being at sea will limit slam into dock or shore damage, but why did they wait so long to get going. 2 weeks warning they could of been somewhere less 'stormy' by the time they sank.

Got to see the Bounty up close when it came to our town this past summer, its quite a large tall ship. Sucks that she went down.

Sad. Beautiful ship, made in Nova Scotia too, lots of people there very proud of her.
