I couldn't find the original thread of this so I'll do it again. I got a few years ago with spending 27 bucks for 5 blades, buying a cheesy sharpener that never worked for them. So the last 18 months I've been using my dads 1962 gillette super speed adjustable. It works awesome, a blade lasts me 4-5 shaves, I can sharpen them, but I'm trying to find some better lather than what I use so if anyone here uses these razors, let me know what you use. I also have a Gillette fatboy but I prefer the superspeed adjustable.:

Disposables? I would rather shave with a shovel than a disposable, they are only used by pre-pubescents and hospital workers for shaving pre-ops. Manly men need a sharp blade!.

Cost Closeness of Shave Looks Classy Better Lather Longer Lasting Morning Zen etc.
To put it shortly, cheap disposables last a few shaves and are done. They are set at an off-angle so they don't shave as closely in one pass as a DE safety razor or straight razor do, so they have to add more blades, which means more times that a blade is passing over the skin meaning rougher, dryer, more break-out-prone skin.
If you go with an expensive disposable, you're spending GOBS on the blade refills. I pay between 5-10 CENTS per blade which will last me twice as long as a Mach-whatever-they're-up-to-now cartridge.
The ceremony of the mug, brush, lather, and razor get me in a good mood for the morning
It takes barely any longer to do it the proper way
And it looks snazzy on your bathroom counter.
Also, I get fewer ingrown hairs, can use the same blades with multiple style razors (adjustable, slant-bar, open comb, closed comb, etc) for different applications from trimming to shaving my head, to an everyday face-shave.
It's just better. The only reason you saw the switch to disposable cartridges is that Gillette realized that they had to change the way they did business. Their old razors were too dependable, and the blades lasted too long, to remain profitable in a global market. So they created the cartridge to renew their old loss-leader system. Ever notice you can buy a new Mach4Turbo with 3 cartridges for less than half the price of a 5 cartridge refill pack?

Also, Johnny Canuck:
I prefer "Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap" for my lather. The natural lanolin from the lamb fat is really good for your skin's tone and complexion over time. Keeps it from drying out, etc.

What blades do all of you use? I'm trying to find a brand to buy in bulk. I'm trying out a few before I do so, so I don't end up with 300 blades that will shred my face. I use a Merkur Standard with Feather blades right now.
I am using CO Bigelow cream right now, it is re-branded Proraso and its for sale at bath and body works and they always have some sort of deal going on.
I also have a Dovo Blackstar cutthroat, I haven't used it too much. Maybe this winter I'll increase my build my skills with it.
and Mehs, if you're still blade shopping I also like Derbys. I may have a surplus of those sitting around, if I do and you're interested I would pop some in the mail for you.

I'm at the mercy of what I can get online until I can get to a big city that actually has a store dedicated to shaving. I saw one in Vancouver but I just didn't have enough time to get what I wanted. Thanks for the lather tip Tallen, I've had a string of lathers that are dried out before I'm done.

The Proraso stuff you have is a fine soap. What I do is soak my brush while I shower then shake out the excess water and make lather from there.
You can always add more water, look up mantic59 on youtube, he has some good video tips. But it sounds like you've got a fine setup for shaving...I use a preshave oil that I make with castor oil/walnut oil. The art of shaving 1 oz bottle is just a mix of castor/olive oils and some essential oil for scent but costs 30 dollars for that ounce. A 16 oz bottle of castor oil is 9 bucks on amazon.

Yes. I use my Gillette T4 on my head in the summer for daily upkeep and my Merkur HD Open-Comb when I need to knock down a good growth.
edit: What's more, they're actually better to shave your head with than cartridges. Cartridge blades get all gunked up when shaving your head. DE razors don't have anywhere to trap all the hair and lather, meaning they stay sharper longer giving you a closer shave in half the time because you aren't pounding it against the side of the sink to clean it every two passes.

Told my brother I was interested in getting a Safety Razor for Christmas this year, he has been looking at options since I mentioned it. Seems Amazon has some Merkur sets for around $50 USD...decent brand? This would be my first personal Safety Razor, so input would be nice. Hoping to get him some intel tomorrow before he buys me something. Not that I would be upset if he only spent $7 bucks, but he is one who normally does his research.

Pretty unlikely. You may get a little nick every once in a while if you knock the head off a zit or something, but no more likely than with a modern cartridge razor.

Merkur is a fantastic company. My first razor was a Merkur HD Open-Comb. I still use it to this day, though prefer it for my head and my Gillette Tech 1 Piece Solid Bar for my face.
The biggest decision is comb type. Do you have a thick beard and get ingrown hairs? Go open comb (it cuts closer to the skin) Moderate beard but still want a close shave? Slant-bar is the way to go. Pretty normal facial hair and you shave every day? Solid Bar.
After that, it's all pretty much aesthetics. Do you want it heavy or light? Fat or slim? Silver or Gold? One Piece or two? Butterfly or sandwich head?
You can use regular shaving cream to start if you're working on a budget. But the brush and mug are essential down the road for a truly fantastic experience.

Yeah, that'll work fine. Open comb bars are made to force heavy facial hair into a channel to be cut. Solid bar will cut a little further away from the skin meaning the hair never gets a chance to go below the opening in the skin resulting in fewer ingrown hairs.

Eh... they're O.K. at best. They're a front for P&G so you're only going to see fancy cartridge handles for razors. The brushes are overpriced as well. They have some decent balms and creams, and they carry DE blades if you need some but don't want to order online.

I'm intrigued.
Knowing nothing about the use of safety razors, what do I need to know to get started? If it saves me cartridge cost, I'm intrigued. Normally I pull the razor over my face and head every morning in the shower, so those add up quick.

The grip is pretty intuitive and they're pretty easy to use right out of the box. If you're going for head and face all in one go, get a closed come/straight bar as it's pretty much the all-purpose DE safety razor. Pay the few bucks for some Merkur Platinum blades rather than hitting up the drug store for some off-brand. Lather like you normally would and go to town. You don't need to press hard, let the weight of the razor do the work. If you find it doesn't have enough pressure, then you can apply some of your own. Buy a styptic pen/pencil from a drug store and use it to hit any nicks you may have. It'll take a few times for your skin to get used to a much sharper blade, but once you shave with a true safety razor for about a week, you shouldn't have any problems anymore. Finally, don't start using it when you're in a hurry, give yourself some time to practice with it without rushing.

You'll need a brush and mug to get a lather from the wool fat soap. So yeah, buy those too. You don't HAVE to start out with an expensive brush. You can use one of the cheap ones you can find at CVS or whatnot. Same goes for the mug, you can use an old coffee mug if you want to start.
I would, however, look into the different grades of brushes. You definitely want to eventually get a badger brush, and then you want to decide which grade of badger will work for you. My personal suggestion is this one: http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/product/shaving-gear-shaving-brush-and-stand-32045.aspx?kw=edwin&processor=content" rel="nofollow - http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/product/shaving-gear-shaving-brush-and-stand-32045.aspx?kw=edwin&processor=content I've never found a better one for the price, AND it includes a stand (a cheap one, but still...) Next to your blades, your brush is the most important thing. Too scratchy or stiff an it'll be unpleasant. Too soft and you may have a hard time working up lather. I might just make a short video on how to do this stuff and post it tonight.

He's made enough tutorials to cover most anything. I use an old soup mug for a bowl, it has more space for the brush to move around in, when I used a coffee mug I felt like I was just banging the brush around the sides.

Any suggestions on razors? Yes, I know there are a dozen different styles, but I would like to ebay a razor, and I have no idea what to get. I would like the 1950's razor equivalent of a Tippmann 98C (The no frills, no ACT tactical models :D)
I should mention that I am a lazy bum and don't shave everyday. I sometimes let my face go for a week or so. I don't get ingrown hairs, but I usually get those bloody marks on my neck whenever I shave, which I usually chalk up to irritation.
Also, something with a blade protrusion on one side only is preferred, but not necessary.

Gillette Tech series or Adjustable. Just search 1950's Gillette and you really won't go wrong.

Protip: Take it to your local barber shop and have them sterilize it before you use it. Also, they polish up really nicely (being stainless steel) with some "Nevr-dull" wadding polish.

Yes the tech razors are all real good. My old razors were pretty scuzzy so I bought some Barbicide from a local barber and soaked all my razors, unfortunately it made the brass one a weird coppery green colour.

I'm no expert by any means, but eBay is really the way to go. It seems like I paid less than the average 'new' one for a nice razor.
Who knows, in a week or two someone who just bought one might hate the thing and be willing to sell it if they don't like their razor.

I decided to clean my razors, the ss adjustable was pretty clean but the other 3 were real gross, especially my Granpas old razor, the Gillette Red Tip. I found some sites that described how to do it safely without ruining the finish so I cleaned them all. I found some #'s and the razors are not the years I thought. The Gillette Red Tip is a 1956, brass one 1929 and Tech was the right year. I have shaved all week with the Gillette Red Tip and I love it, I have pretty rapid growth and shave every 2nd day, it shaves very close, although I have to watch the angle. I'm waiting for some Feather blades that are supposed to work real well with this razor.:

I suppose next time I go back to the homestead I might just dig through the loft and find my great-grandpa's old razor and clean it up. I like the cost over time factor, but is it really a better shave? My Fusion power is OK, I like the single blade on the back for tight stuff, but I always felt that the M3 was better in a lot of ways, I can shave with it stupidly fast, and quite close and without irritation, provided I shave twice a day.

if you're speaking about closeness, you can get just as close with a double edge razor, it may take more time depending on the person and style. If you are in a hurry - like I am sometimes - I'll use my hydro, it's just such a different way of shaving and I much prefer the overall shave with a double edge.

I figure its worth spending a little extra, if it will last and I won't need to pick up a new one, so I'm looking at this http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/2053630/2184269.htm" rel="nofollow - brush (plus the linked brush is out of stock :P)
I do have a silly question about mugs though. If I pick up http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LY91JU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&smid=A3Q626NKBA22B1" rel="nofollow - this , does the dish double as a mug, or will I still need a mug?
You guys are awesome!

I love Duluth Trading, I finally wore through my firehose work pants, I have to send those back in next week to get replaced. You can argue with a pair of pants with a lifetime warranty. The pockets are great on those things.

Way heavier. The smooth handle is actually quite easy to hold because of the edges.

Got my crap in today. A few observations:
1) My technique apparently needs some work. I would say the closeness was somewhere between Mach 3 and Braun 3 series.
2) I did actually get really close on the first pass at the one spot on my neck that I can never seem to get.
3) At least there isn't any irritation.
4) That wool soap is easily the greatest shaving face stuff I have ever used.
5) There was a very noticeable difference between my old boar brush and the new badger.

First shave finished today. First few passes where rough to the point of "oh god, I may have made a mistake" but once I got the angle right I couldn't even tell it was shaving. I did a few passes without feeling anything and thought I must be doing something wrong but I checked and the hair was all gone.
It's definitely not as close as I might have hoped, but that's probably either my technique or the razor itself. I use a Gillette tech and I've read its the least aggressive razor you can get. I read you're only supposed to shave with the grain, does anyone go against the grain or is that really no good? I definitely like the wool soap, but it wasn't a very thick lather. I probably just need to lather it up longer next time.
Overall, no regrets, just need some practice I think

Go with the grain, across the grain, then against the grain. It is very acceptable to do that order. Otherwise it will never get close. I love it now that I have my DE razor.
I ordered an alum block and a large blade sampler. I'm hoping the alum block will give me some good feedback with my technique.

Lol at the fact that all of us are doing this.
I bought myself a Tech on New Year's Day in pretty beat condition - will have to see how much I can clean it up. If it goes well, I'll probably be buying all the necessary accessories in the next week.

I like my tech, that's a good price too. I still like the angle of the the Red Tips but I usually shave every 2-3 days so it works for my stubble better.

You guys need to drop in at local antique shops. That's half the fun of wet shaving - some great buys can be had.
My SuperSpeed (The razor on the left) was purchased for three dollars, and then cleaned up with a rubbing compound. (Razor on the right is a Merkur SlantBar for those wondering)
Those of you who are questioning the first shave, it gets much better with time and practice.

^Nice! Blades make a huge difference too, I bought a sampler pack from amazon, gillettes, bluebirds and feathers. The Feather blades are amazing, for my stubble the only blade that has no tug at all, although they are a bit unforgiving when I go against the grain. The gillette 7:00 oclocks are very good as well.

One thing my dad mentioned was my grandpa and him both used an ice cube on their face after shaving, I've tried it this week and I quite like it. I also got Prada aftershave balm for christmas, it's great stuff.

Stopped by a local antique house per Stealth's suggestion - that was a mistake. Found 2 Gillette Techs in nice condition, but for $40. No thanks. My mistake was going to the one I did; they attract a moderate audience and hold many dealers. I'm sure I'd have better luck at someplace a bit more hole-in-the-wall-like. Everything there was quite pricey, not just the razors.
Anyways, I think my plan of action is to find the one I want online (between a SuperSpeed / Tech or some sort of new Merkur) and just keep my eyes open for deals at other antique shops / markets etc.

Remember you can always haggle those prices, bring a phone and say: "I can buy this like new online right now for $20.00 - I'll give you 19.00"
Have the cash ready, and chance is you walk away with a new razor.
Cash talks - and a savvy consumer who can prove prices VIA a mobile and internet, typically gets what they want.

Yeah, absolutely. That would've been my approach, but it was an antique house where the owner of the display doesn't have to be on premises, and thus, he wasn't. I'm assuming dealers are just able to rent out some space there. I can keep trying back though, and if I were really interested in what he had to offer, I'm sure the owners could always get me in touch with him.
We shall see. I am keeping an eye on some ebay auctions currently, so hopefully those go well.

I think I would find a 3 piece annoying. I wouldn't want more stuff coming apart when putting the blade in. It would be nice for cleaning though.

Nice price on the Tech, my Gillette tech is a '30's model, it's not as convenient as the tto razors but it shaves just fine. I still swear by Feather blades, you won't believe the difference they make.

Daily for a month and the first time changing the blade? You sir must not have a lot of hair to begin with. I felt pulling on about the 5th shave on my merkur blade. I'm testing out other blades like Derby right now. Not as nice as merkur, but I kind of want to try other blades before I dip into the feather blades.

My hair is pretty thin. My 4 day shadow is thinner than some 5 o'clock shadows. I also don't shave on weekends, so I probably got in 15-20 shaves.

For reference - I'd personally just skip the other blades and go straight to Feathers.
You'll end up using them in the end any way.
