My rec scenario team and I played this past weekend in Michigan on Saturday the 20th, it was in the mid to high 80s with around 60% humidity. We for the most part all use Tippmann products, ranging from 98C/PS/Pro, A5s, X7s, and TiPX's. My question is, are these conditions more likely to cause oring malfunctions? We had 5 guns go down that day all of them either because the ASA was chewing up tank orings or the seers weren't catching on the second stroke, which I attribute to the bolt orings swelling. I should add that at the beginning of the day I tune everyone's FPS, lube the orings, and inspect everyone's gun for loose bolts. No ones receiver frame bolts were over tightened and the orings have all been lubed and used recently. I guess what Im fishing around for is if the temperature conditions could have caused the orings to swell or deteriorate? I use Hoppes #9 gun oil. Guns ranged from 275-310 fps at the coldest and hottest over the chrono. Additionally one of our remote lines ASA adapter blew an oring, it swelled to the point where i could fit a quarter through it and its original size was closer to a nickel. Hope you guys can help this amateur gun tech out. Additionally I extend an invitation to anyone in the Southern Michigan area to join my group "Prison City Paintball" in Jackson. Hoppes #9 gun oil has petroleum in it. Petroleum will soften the O-rings faster. I use Rem oil and never had an issue with it softening/weakening my o-rings.

| One of our guys was using Gold Cup, so Im not convinced it was the petroleum based lube, although that very well could have caused some softening over time. Most of the orings that blew were duplicates, literally blew 3 on a single gun over the course of the day. |

Gold Cup is pretty decent on o-rings. Makes me wonder if it was just a bad batch of o-rings if you were all pulling from the same stock. Usually, the ASA chewing them up is an issue of cross-threading or dirt or debris build up that causes damage to the rings. As for the hammer o-rings, swelling can happen with them when there are extreme temperature differentials, rapid firing for a long duration can chill them down, or if they're of a certain type, cause them to become gas permeated, but that takes some serious hammering on the trigger to do that. The biggest culprit for hammer o-rings is a rough power tube catching the ring as it enters. Without the markers in front of me, it's difficult to say. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. | Thanks for the insight Talen, thats the conclusion I was coming to, either bad orings or the temp difference from the CO2 cooling down the orings then the weather and idle time would allow for the orings to swell or something. I dont think we had cross thread or dirty ASAs. Im hoping our next excursion into the woods wont be so stressful XD. |

asa chewing up o-rings; it happens. urethane o-rings fare better than buna in that regard, but really you need an on-off asa or on-off valve on your c02 tanks. lubing the asa threads helps with tank removal. |

Actually, Gold Cup was developed for the use in air powered equipment that uses orings as seals and introduced to paintball back in the late 80's/early 90's. Rem oil also contains a petroleum based by product - http://www.remington.com/~/media/Files/MSDS/MSDS-RemOil_Aerosol.ashx They don't soften the orings, they cause them to swell. I recommend Gold Cup oil for mechanical guns or Dow33 for electro's. A couple of drops of oil in the asa each time (day) you play will work wonders for mech guns. Oil it, cycle the gun 20-30x then go play. Back when c02 was the only option, oiling the asa was critical for mechanical longevity. As for the asa chewing the orings up, this is usually caused when someone unscrews the tank partially, then tries to screw the tank back in, This will eat up orings faster then temp changes. |
