Except for the ball detent (orange rubber thing) being backwards, it looks alright to me. When was the last time it was used? In all honesty, it doesn't look like its seen much action at all. There's little wear on the body shells, no rust on the internals, and nothing looks to be missing. I'd say you've gotten quite a deal.

The 98c is a solid marker, and its design is at the base of a lot of Tippmann's other markers. Really, the only way to make sure everything is completely functional, is to put some air through it and see what happens. Tough to gauge the quality of the seals from a picture, but based on the overall appearance of the marker, I'd wager they're just fine.

The only thing I caution you, is to watch that damned front sight spring on reassembly and disassembly, its finicky and used to like to fly away on me.  Other than that, you'll find it to be a very user-friendly marker and will last you as long as you decide to play the game and take care of it.

Correct. You want the ball detent to be pushed down by the forward travel of the bolt. In the orientation in the picture, the bolt would hang up on it rather than travel over it.

Nice pick-up.

It's a second/third gen 98c. It's older, but that doesn't make much difference. It's actually the marker that has the absolute MOST parts and upgrades availability out of all of them.

You can use drop-in kits to make it fully automatic, select fire, or even on-demand burst fire. You can put a center-feed on it, make it run on lower pressure air sources, you can even convert it to a fully electro-pneumatic marker (same operation as the ultra-high-end markers).

Great marker, and it's good that it's got something other than the stock barrel as well even if it a little long for my tastes.

Did it just come with the standard hopper (where the paintballs are loaded) or a motorized one?

I'm certain it's NOT a ACT  (anti chop) but does that really matter ?

my sons got a Tippmann Custom PRO ( dual trigger / ACT/ forward air mount )

Just some things to not.. The fields near me DO NOT allow for automatics would a RT trigger be considered "auto"  aside from the barrel , what other worthwhile mods are there.

AND JUST SO EVERYONE knows.... yea I'm a tinkerer.. I like to make thing 'better'  .. I'm already considering painting this thing gloss white (just do it looks different than my kids marker)

Real tough to say on age. The 98C has been around a long time, but they've been pumping out new ones for for quite some time as well. The age of it doesn't matter a whole lot- not so much as the condition of it, and I'd say yours is in excellent shape.

yea it came with a standard 200ball( ???) hopper feeder thing.  a stock Tippman barell and the 14" 'whisper' barell a small Co2 tank all the allen keys.  VERY complete ... the trigger spring looks squished and distorted and provides ZERO push on the trigger when the marker is not cocked.

I'd like to paint it white... just to look different than my kids  Tippmann custom pro.  I thought I read somewhere that you can remove the factory finish by soaking in automatic tranny fluid ?  True ???

I like gun metal gray colors as well.

Polished / cleaned to my liking. Far from perfect but good enough for my taste. Def smoother in the chamber for the o-rings

Yeah, ATF will take the paint right off from what I understand. I've never done it myself, but I've heard of people using it.

The ball detent (though mangled) will still work fine. I've seen them worn down to little nubs and still do the job. Essentially it's just there to prevent the ball in the chamber from rolling down the barrel, and preventing double-feeds from the stack coming down from your hopper.

Even though your field doesn't allow automatic fire, an e-trigger upgrade or e-bolt (which is no longer produced, but can be bought used) would still be good to get at some point if you really get into playing. Semi-auto micro-switch operated double-triggers can be amazingly fast if you know how to "walk" them with your fingers. Below is a great example of how fast it can go with the right setup on your marker:

The key thing to get that speed and being able to walk is electronic fire control replacing the standard sear-and-spring setup that you currently have. It's not for everyone, but again, if you really get into playing and want to up your game, it's something to consider.

As for polishing, it looks good. You don't want to take down too much of the metal because then you can have o-ring issues (if you remove too much of the hammer walls, it won't seat properly and you'll lose blow-back/recocking pressure).

Those little pop-out panels on the grip are for the e-bolt and e-trigger upgrades. The rounded depression under the sear and trigger area is for an RT piston. And the depressions running from the fore-grip area to the valve body area are for a vertical-adapter.

That's a Generation-2 98C. You can tell because the lower section of the grip frame isn't flat on the interior (the newer ones are flat to better seat an e-trigger setup) but the trigger return spring is the vertical set-up and not the pinned one in the first generation of 98Cs.

In my personal opinion, it's the best marker Tippmann ever made. Do newer models have some nice perks and whatnot? Sure. But the classic 98c's a a blank slate, you can turn them into ANYTHING. For example, this is probably one of the most famous 98's of all time:

Now, that's a lot of money and time sunk into a project, and it's ugly as sin, but boy does it rip!

But back to less complicated modifications.

Everyone here has pretty much always agreed that you want to upgrade the barrel and hopper first thing. Barrels make the biggest difference in accuracy, and a motorized hopper, even a cheap ReVLution loader from Wal-mart, will ensure a consistent feed rate. This means few if any chopped rounds in the chamber. I'm sure you noticed playing with a rental, that if a ball broke in the barrel or got chopped in half by the bolt in the chamber, your accuracy greatly decreased. Preventing those two things from happening will make your game 1000% more enjoyable.

Try out the barrel you have on there (I've never heard of it myself, but there are a million different barrels out there) and if it seems to make a great difference over the stock barrel and you're happy with it, stick with it for the time being. If it's not a big improvement, we usually suggest the J&J Ceramic in 12"-14" Anything past 14" and you're wasting air pushing the ball down the barrel. Anything less than 11.5" and you're having to use too much air to bring the ball up to speed at the muzzle.

Start with those two things, take a look at other people's markers at the field and see what they've done, and go from there on upgrades. Some people are all about looks (they want it to look realistic or whatnot) Others are interested in fire rate (e-trigger/RT/ebolt) others are interested in efficiency (Low pressure kit, HPA, double regulation) and some are happy with just going out and blasting away with a reliable barrel and hopper.

No matter what you do, you're going to have fun!

Yes. They work very well with the 98c, and the marker is already set up to make installation a snap!

Given the serial number of your 98c, you will need to purchase a http://www.tippmannparts.com/98-21NR-Tippmann-POWER-TUBE-PLASTIC-p/3935.htm" rel="nofollow - different power tube

Or you can attempt to drill the little nub for the banjo fitting on your stock power tube, but I've never had much luck with that. It's only $10 to make sure everything works well.

thanks for the advise.. Right now I'm just going to put in all back together.. gravity feed hopper and all and just go have some fun on Sat night at "night paintball" on our local field.

Like I said I like to modify things (cars to tools)  : )

So keep and eye out for upcoming things ,,,

TO DO:

customized paint to make it MINE

1) either a RT trigger or a E trigger (any pros or cons to either set up ???)
2) a cyclone feeder
3) dual / longer trigger

DO these MODS break these field rules ??

Markers

  1. All markers will be .68 or 50 caliber pump action or semi-automatic markers.

  2. Semi-automatic is defined as that which gives one shot per trigger pull and release.

  3. No fully automatic paintguns are allowed.

  4. Do not use "ramping" features if your marker is so equipped.

  5. Maximum velocity will be 285 feet per second with three shots fired across a chronograph with none above the limit.

R/T runs off the exhaust air from your valve, just like the Cyclone Feeder system does. If you're running a cyclone and a R/T, you have to make special modifications to allow a larger volume of air to be diverted to get both systems to run simultaneously. There are kits to do this, in fact there's info on it at tippmannparts.com when looking at the description of the cyclone feed system for the 98. The upshot is, you don't have to worry about batteries dying on you in the middle of a game and you can easily go between true semi and R/T just by varying the pressure you exert on the trigger. Most fields allow R/T even if they say no full-auto. Check with your field though. It's also possible to turn the R/T off if they don't allow it at one field but do at another.

The pros and cons of the e-grip/e-trigger set up are similar. You can switch between various modes (ramping, reflex, semi, full auto, etc) but not on the fly. The controls are under the grip panels to keep people honest on the field. The trigger pull is also reduced greatly with an e-trigger which makes walking the trigger very easy. The only drawback is batteries. But that's something that most of us deal with these days anyway whether it be batteries for motorized hoppers or batteries to run high-end markers. Usually, if you pop a fresh 9v into the marker at the start of a day of play, it'll last you the whole time, no problems. Other pros are that you can upgrade the board to allow different firing modes, and some even allow you to program your own modes into them.

2) a cyclone feeder
3) dual / longer trigger

DO these MODS break these field rules ??

Markers

All markers will be .68 or 50 caliber pump action or semi-automatic markers.
No issues here

Semi-automatic is defined as that which gives one shot per trigger pull and release.
This is where the rules can get fuzzy on the R/T. Technically your ARE pulling the trigger for each shot, it's just that the marker forces the trigger back to the ready position with the use of a gas-operated piston each time. In essence, it's semi-auto assist. You're literally bouncing the trigger off your fingers by varying pressure. Some fields allow it, some fields don't. Just call them up and ask if you can still play using a R/T on an older 98c. Really, it's no faster than someone using a high-end marker and walking the trigger.

No fully automatic paintguns are allowed.
This is pretty normal across the board with most fields. Unless playing a scenario event.

Do not use "ramping" features if your marker is so equipped.
Ramping is another feature that is allowed at some fields and not at others. Usually the fields that allow it separate their walk-on groups into "rentals" and "owners." Rentals groups are just that, people who play using rented equipment, it's a level playing field and nobody is going to get over-shot and go home pouting. They tend to let the owner walk-ons use more features as they're more used to the game. But I digress. Ramping might as well be fully automatic. You still have to pull the trigger a certain number of times per second to get it to kick in, but once you do, the marker goes full auto until you stop dancing on the trigger. Local fields have a tough time figuring out who is using ramping and who isn't though. A lot of less honest players will simply drop the ramping rate down to a reasonable level (9-10bps) which doesn't give them much of an advantage over the average Joe, but it doesn't draw attention to the fact that they're technically cheating. Regardless, you can turn that function off if your marker is equipped with it.

Maximum velocity will be 285 feet per second with three shots fired across a chronograph with none above the limit.
This is just pure safety related stuff. Max safe FPS was determined to be 300FPS almost 30 years ago through a mixture of scientific testing and trial and error. In the early days of adjustable velocities, guys started coming home with lacerations, cracked lenses, and broken digits when people started cranking the velocities up. Eventually the industry self-regulated and came up with 300FPS as a safe limit with the help of the ASTM and others. Most fields want to add another layer of safety in there for very good reasons. Most people use CO2 to fire their markers, CO2 in a liquid state holds more potential energy than "expanded" gaseous CO2. If you suck some liquid into the marker's valve, it's going to rapidly expand when the valve is opened, more so than the gaseous version is. This means a spike in velocity which can be anywhere from 5 to 20fps. It also keeps their liability insurance companies happy by backing away from that limit of 300FPS. Again, you'll have some people try to cheat the system because they think it'll give them more distance, or that it makes them "hardcore" but anyone who has ever been hit by "hot" shot knows that the limit exists for a reason.

As for the main differences between your marker and your son's:
1) ACT. His hammer, linkage arm, and endcap are all different than yours. You CAN convert yours to ACT if I recall correctly (don't quote me on that though) it's just a matter of swapping parts.
2) His stock trigger is a double trigger. Walking a mechanical trigger is really hard, but double triggers give you more leverage so you don't wear your fingers out with trigger pull, and it's already there for when people make upgrades to electronic triggers so you don't have to buy it then.
3) He has a drop-forward ASA. This puts the tank lower and further forward on his marker making it easier to pop in and out of tight spaces. It DOES make the marker taller though, giving more of a vertical target to shoot back at.
4) CP Barrel. They're a good barrel. I had one on my DMLCD back in the day. I still prefer LAPCO and J&J myself.

Pretty minor differences other than the ACT.

I have to disagree with this.  While I never used a Whisper Barrel on a Tippmann, I have tried them on one of my pumps and the excessive porting really caused problems with air efficiency and maintaining adequate velocity.

To double check, call up Tippmann directly or the guys over at Tippmannparts.com and ask them if their available kits will fit your 98c. have the serial number handy for reference. The ACT models are pre-cut for the e-grip to fit right in, but you can modify the older 98 customs to fit the set-up.

As for the e-bolt. They aren't as hard to find as you'd think.

If you're really interested in it, it'll require the switch to HPA instead of CO2. If you're up for that, then check in on the B/S/T forums on either http://www.mcarterbrown.com/" rel="nofollow - M Carter Brown or http://www.98og.net" rel="nofollow - The Model 98 Owner's Group

You can always post a WTB (want to buy) post and see if anyone has one to sell. That's how I got mine.

It's a WGP (now defunct company) Back Magic Autococker. The Autococker was one of the first semi-auto platforms and pretty much ruled the tournament circuit until the early 2000's when electros became widely available.

They're overly complicated to achieve a simple task, but that's what makes them fun. All that crap up under the barrel there is solely used to re-cock the marker. It uses a 4 way valve, low pressure regulator, and air ram to push the block at the back of the marker rearward when the trigger is pushed past a certain position. Then, when the trigger is released, it forces the back block forward again chambering a round. One of the only closed-bolt systems in paintball.

The autococker itself is relatively cheap these days. The money-pit starts when you realize you can literally change every single last part on it for something different. Everything from the bodies, back and front blocks, pneumatics, barrels, regulators, grip frames, trigger, valves, springs, bolts, etc. etc. etc.

You can see several in operation in the practice match between Avalanche and the Iron Men in the old documentary "Push": http://youtu.be/PhkMNBXkLuQ?t=11m30s" rel="nofollow - Link

The guy near the start at around 11:40 is using one, you can see the back block pushing backwards and forwards with every pull of the trigger. A bunch of other guys use it too. You see someone shooting one off the break from the other side too.

I'm not in AZ myself. You're probably thinking of the other guy with a gas-mask equipped avatar, Impulse481. I don't know where in AZ he lives, but he's played Wild West before, I know that.

I live up in MD right between DC and Frederick.
