So, I am considering selling y car this summer and getting a truck when I get back to the states.  I would like to put a long travel suspension on it for general hooligan stuff.  I don't want to spend more than 15k for the truck, 10k would be even better.  4x4 is a must.  I'd like to stick to the smaller side of trucks, I don't really need a F-150 or a V8.  I've been looking mostly at Sport Tracs and Tacomas but am open to suggestions.

Pics for funsies.

What type of hooligan stuff are we talking about?

I'm a red-blooded, 'Merican-driving, Tojo-hating car enthusiast but even I have to recommend the Tacoma (unfortunately) over the Sport Trac purely because of aftermarket availability. Toyota made a zillion Tacomas that are doing interesting things everywhere, while Ford made a billion Explorers that are sitting at malls and many of them aren't sport tracs. The only bad things about Tacomas are that they generally rot in half.

I would buy a Ranger over a Sport Trac myself. More choices in cab/bed/powertrain, and there are a lot more out there.

Also, if you have space/can afford it, buy a second vehicle. If you seriously want to beat it up, it is a luxury knowing you can get to work monday. Then you can get cheaper vehicles and not care what happens. Plus, if you get a 3/4 or 1 ton with leafs in the front, suspension lifts are cheap.

Similar to the pictures. Maybe some light trails and mud. No rock crawling or anything like that. This would be my DD but I plan on having a 2nd car or motorcycle around.

Toyota trucks rot in half as a down side. up side the engine is pretty much bomb proof. so as long as you don't mind some natural "aerodynamic" changes to the body in the next decade its a safe bet.

Can you elaborate on "rot in half"?

the body rusts like it was dipped in a salt bath and left there for a few weeks. this does happen over a long period of time, and may be different outside of the "salt belt".

Depending on the model year, the Tacomas were riddled with corrosion issues. I don't know why, weather it is poor design or use of recycled steel in Japan or whatever.

I believe Toyota had a complete recall at some point. I don't know which model years. As far as I know, Toyota got their stuff together at some point.

There is a picture of a decent looking Toyota with the frame disintegrated on the lift. The cab is on a two point lift with the bed hanging. May be fake.

The frames that were rust-prone to the point of being defective were built by Dana in the US. Just sayin'

The JT Vins were all made in Japan, aside from the american versions which I believe had the boxes built in usa; tacomas came out mid '95.  IIRC 99.5 to 00 were under recall for frame rust, they bought them back from you, quite a few people looked for them just to get the buyback $$.  I had a 93 which I just sold, it had original paint and there was not a spot of rust anywhere on it.  Was a great truck, but not very comfortable when driving in city traffic.
