My husband and father-in-law are starting to get into paintball. They both have a Tippmann 98 Custom. We are wondering if you have to use co2 or if you can shot it without it?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Co2 or composed air are the most common options for using paintball makers and the 98 is perfectly suited for use with either. One or the other must be used.

For the maker to properly function one or the other must be used. Have fun and play safe!

One or the other. You don't have to just choose one and stick to it, you can swap back and forth at any time if that's what you're getting at.

The 98 is very versatile and can use either CO2 or compressed air (also known as HPA or High Pressure Air). It also depends on whatever medium the field that they plan to play at uses. There have been issues with using CO2 where it can freeze the O rings and some internals and because of this many that use CO2 would use it running a remote line. With HPA this is not an issue.

Find out what the field uses, unless you plan to play in your own woods, because the air bottles for each on are different. Personally I picked up one of each as one field that I play at uses HPA while another uses CO2.

Now what about you joining in the game. My wife loved her first outing other than the hits (she bruises just be giving her a dirty look), so I went out and brought her all the body armor I can put on her petite 4'11" frame. Her second time out was even more enjoyable for her.
