and it's going to be big and bad and chambered in 22lr!

I'm kinda on the fence about what exactly I should get.  I'm going to be using it for mostly plinking and the occasional squirrel hunt.  I walked into my local shop and the showed me this goofy... yet pretty cool looking ruger 10/22.

It kinda seems over the top for going out squirrel hunting, but on the other hand it looks neat, and is still a ruger 10/22 underneath.

The other option is getting a run of the mill 10/22, or another brand... of which I'm not terribly familiar with.

I could probably get away with spending about half the cost of the tacticool 10/22 if I just got a normal one or a Remington 597.  I'll have the cash for either since I'm selling my 20 gauge since I don't see myself ever using it any more.  Opinions?  Thoughts?

I don't have any experience with the Remington, but I do with the 10/22. I believe the tacticool version would be overkill for what you need. I did pick up a 10/22 take down, and I like it a lot. Stainless receiver, and barrel. Comes with a weaver mount. Also has cool carrying case, and of course can be taken down.

I also owned a Savage Mark II. Great shooting rifle, but the mags were finicky at times and was slow with follow up shots. If I were to get another small bolt action, I would go with the 17hmr.

Mossberg makes a semi auto 22lr, but again no experience.

The 10/22 is the most popular, will be the easiest to fine parts and mods for. And Rugers 25 round factory mags are bullet proof.

I also just looked at Rugers site and saw their new rifle. This has a lot of great features also. http://www.ruger.com/products/102250thAnniversary/models.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.ruger.com/products/102250thAnniversary/models.html

I also own a Savage MkII and it always was a great shooter. I spent about a hundred bucks on it, and still plink with it.

Ruger 10/22 's are fun little rifles. You can easily upgrade sights, barrels and stocks.

Also saw this guy. Adjustable trigger, and accepts 10/22 magazines.  http://www.ruger.com/products/americanRimfire/models.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.ruger.com/products/americanRimfire/models.html

I think I should probably go to gander or cabelas too.  This local shop is a little odd.  The vibe there is definitely more form over function.  I think I'm going to opt for a more normal looking ruger, and take the extra money I'll save and buy a couple of the 25 round mags, and start my handgun fund.

A 10/22 does not need all that tactical stuff stuck on it. A bare bones one will work just fine. The take down version is a great little backpack rifle. I'd honestly save the money and buy a normal one. The only advantage I can see of the first one posted is the barrel *may* be threaded to take a suppressor.

If you want to "bling" a 10/22 there are much better options than that tacticool one.

This is very true.  However, once you do put all the tactical stuff on it, you can take it out in public and snicker at the liberals who freak over the "evil assault rifle."

I have both the Remington M597 and a 10/22 carbine for a side-by-side comparison. The stock accuracy of the Remington is far superior as is balance and general feel of it. The mags are a weak point, but supposedly the newer versions are fine. The original plastic ones hated waxed ammo. Mine has a pretty awful trigger, by supposedly the newer bull-barreled version has a different system that's excellent. The whole idea behind the 597 was to be a shooter out of the box while the 10/22 was a bit more utilitarian and a growth platform. I suppose I should send mine in for the factory extractor and ejector modifications and see if they'll put in the new trigger system. I really love the Remington much more except for the reliability and trigger. The new ones are supposed to be good. Also, don't go with the tacticool version of the 10/22. If you want that, get a S&W M&P 22.

I would take a stock 10/22 over the tacticool one, but its your money. I have a few and haven't had any problems with them, but I don't shoot as much as I did in the past.

Cabelas has the takedown listed as $370 which is about $100 more than a regular 10/22.  The 15/22 is on sale right now for $500.

Turns out though, I might be getting a break action .410 and 22lr from my grandpa if my cousin doesn't want it.  That, and my wife's cousin has a Beretta 92fs that he wants to sell and I've been looking for a full size 9mm.  Decisions decisions.

I would laugh if it were not true.
