Hi I was just out paintballing today and got shot in an unfortunate place and I noticed that a lot of the paintball pants say they come with some form of groin protection among other things such as built in knee pads. I was just wondering if anyone has a pair of actual paintball pants and how they thought they were protection wise. If I do want to end up wearing a cup I would have to buy some new, baggier pants anyway so I'm just trying to get some information about the pants and how much protection they actually offer. Also I see they sell slide shorts that seem to offer some groin protection. I wonder if combining both the shorts underneath the pants would offer protection similar to a cup. -------------

Paintball specific pants and slide shorts will never offer as complete protection as a cup will, but that said, I've never actually had any major issues getting shot there when wearing a pair of paintball pants without a cup. There's actually a big advantage to the pants, even the lowest grade ones, that you don't get with BDUs or jeans. First off, they're way baggier and roomier which means you tend to stay cooler in them when playing. They also tend to make shots that hit you "bounce" more due to the bagginess. Secondly, the materials tend to be easier to slide in, especially with the additional padding they offer. The built in knee pads still need extra padding under them for true protection (like slip-on soft knee pads), but the pads that are built in make it much easier to slide into cover. Lastly, they tend to have other nice features, like cinching cuffs which help keep things like ticks, dirt, and rocks out, and designated pockets for things like barrel swabs and squeegees. They also tend to have grippy-areas in the back to keep your pod pack from slipping down. IMHO, they're one of the best paintball specific things you can buy. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. I have had a major issue with being hit "there." Quite a few years ago, after taking an exceptionally painful hit I hear the question "Are you out?" As I had dropped my marker and was laying on the ground curled up in a ball and holding my groin I thought this to be a very stupid question and shared these feelings with the person asking. I started wearing protection after that and learned the following:

Thanks for the input guys and I ended up buying some empire contact pants and I really liked them. They are fairly baggy in the groin area and have some padding and I really liked the placement of the pockets. I'm glad I bought them if nothing else they are super comfortable and have some padding in the places you need it. That and actually having zipper pockets is so nice compared to just the cargo pants I was using before. I did consider using my snowboard pants just for the pockets and bagginess that they have but I think I would overheat way too fast wearing snowboard pants haha. I think I will buy some slider shorts once the local proshop gets them in stock or I might just buy a comfortable hockey Jock and then maybe try a cup, but like Mack said I could imagine some cups would be uncomfortable. I might have to give that foam idea a try though. -------------
