We had xmas with the inlaws early since we're traveling this year. So, I'll start off with the loot I picked up today.
- New printer for the home computer
- Vinyl LP storage and transport box
- Rum raisin liquer from Curacao
- Blue Mountain coffee from the BVI
- Universal remote for our TV/Soundbar/Blu-Ray/Cable box setup
- WV "Home" hat
- WV "Home" sticker
- Molle-style overnight bag
For my B-Day I got $275 to put towards a snow blower from my wife and in-laws.

When I went to Costa Rica, they had freshly brewed, local coffee everywhere you went. I don't know if I've ever had a better cup of coffee since.

Yep! We experienced that on our honeymoon. At http://www.laparios.com/" rel="nofollow - Lapa Rios you'd just let the front desk know the night before if you wanted coffee left outside your door in the morning. They'd bring down fresh-brewed local stuff with hot milk and sugar so you could start your day out right. Great stuff. Best cups of coffee I ever had.

My parents got me some real nice Irish Setter rubber hunting boots that I desperately needed. My brother and sister in law got me some beer things, and I got a decent chunk of cash from my grandma which will be used to help buy a house.
At my in-laws I got an enameled cast iron braiser, some nice warm socks (yes I'm old and socks make me happy), and a fair trade organic cotton hipster hoodie that will make me fit in on campus.
I'm actively trying to convince my wife that I need to buy a Shun chefs knife with some of the money we got, but it's not going so well.

Their Wasabi line is perfectly serviceable for home use and at less than half the price. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Shun knives, but they're brittle as all hell and your wife will snap them doing something stupid like trying to pry up the lid on a can of corn or something. Not disparaging your wife, just saying that's how your $100+ chef's knife suddenly becomes 1" shorter at the tip. I've been through three separate 8" chef's knives that way from various misuses by people in professional kitchens. I personally use Shuns for work and keep them under lock and key when I'm not using them directly. I keep a decent but much less expensive set of Wustoffs at home.

How about buying cheap ceramic knives and throwing them away when they chip?

I gave:
To the significant other:
- An Apple Watch with a fancy yellow leather band, because she's been talking about how much she likes the idea of smartwatches for a few years now.
- A bunch of painting supplies, because she oil paints (she says acrylics are for suckers), including a big box of about 10 different odd-sized canvases. She has a bunch of standard canvases already, she specifically asked for oddball shapes, like really horizontal ones, or the tile packs, or black ones. I also got her a big bottle of "medium," which she tells me mixes with the paint, and about a half-dozen big tubes of oil paint. I picked the colors I thought looked cool or had cool names, so hopefully that worked (She's out of town and will open presents when she gets back).
To my mom: - A new laptop. Her old one was super busted and from 2006. She mostly uses an iPad now, but she's getting into collecting/reselling antique art glass, so having a laptop will make her eBay-ing run smoother. I got a basic Acer Chromebook 14, and so far she digs the Chromebook interface -- it does what you need it to.
- I also got her a sleeve and case and wireless mouse for the laptop for travel situations if she needs it.
- A tiny space heater. She said it looked cute so I got it for her.
Grandparent: - A gift basket of candy and food and snacks she likes with $50 gift cards to restaurants she likes. She's hard to buy for. I kind of had to guess.
Other grandparents: - We don't get each other gifts much, as they insist not to get them anything, but I still got them about 8 bags of gourmet coffee (They drink a lot of coffee), some homemade Chex Mix (I am very, very good at making Chex Mix), and a couple of Christmas cacti (They have a big porch they like to load up with potted plants).
I got:
From the significant other:
- A drawing of an NES Classic, to be turned into the real thing at some point.
- I don't know what else because she's not back in town yet, and I follow the rules of Christmas.
From my mom: - A really nice pair of Bluetooth studio headphones that are really overly complicated with a million buttons. I will take them to work, and I may end up just using the cord on them anyway.
- A collection of authentic (given to ground support employees) Space Shuttle Columbia mission patches she put together in a nice shadow box for me (I collect NASA memorabilia).
- A whole bunch of socks with funny patterns. I like socks.
From grandparent: - A new Trivial Pursuit game set (The significant other and I play a lot of Trivial Pursuit).
- One of those Google Cardboard headsets. So far it's been OK but the stutter makes me a little headache-y.
- More socks.
OH, Also I got myself the Super Total Complete Civilization V bundle on Steam. It was like $12 bucks I think. I've never played a Civ game in my life, but I want to try new things, so I'm going to dive in.

I got a nice headlamp for walks on the beach at night, some nice thin merino wool socks and a board game called Scythe, what a blast to play; highly recommend it.

I'm still going to buy a shun. I'll just cut my wife if she breaks it.

This is what I do. I wouldn't know a good knife if I cut my finger off with it. I buy cheap ceramics and throw them away if they snap or if the handle comes off. I must say we went through 2 or 3 sets in the beginning but once people learnt you can't treat them like steel they have lasted much longer.
