Well, I got permission from a mod to sticky this, and I think it's a fairly good information source, so here it is.
How to disassemble the 98 custom.
Note: If necessary, put all small parts somewhere where they wont get lost.
Things you will need: 1. 3/16" allen wrench for ammo box bolt 2. 1/8" allen wrench for receiver bolts 3. 5/64" allen wrench for grip bolts 4. 5/32" allen wrench for velocity screw 5. Plastic bag (not an essential, but it can be of great help)
WARNING!: Make sure your marker is degassed before you disassemble it.
1. Find a good place to do this so that you have a minimal chance of losing anything, and lay the right receiver half (the one that doesnt say 98 custom) facing the ground. 2. Make sure that your marker is degassed first, or else youll have an unwanted surprise when you separate the receiver halves. 3. It will be easier to do this if you remove your tank, and hopper. If the hopper is stuck, use a 3/16" allen wrench to loosen the ammo box bolt (elbow bolt). NOTE: I recommend that you keep the elbow latched so you don't lose the front sight spring. 4. Loosen the ASA screws with a 1/8" allen wrench. If you remove them, put them somewhere were they wont easily be lost. 5. Unscrew the 6 screws from the receiver halves with a 1/8" allen wrench, and put them somewhere where they won easily be lost. 6. Make sure the front velocity screw is screw in enough that it doesnt interfere with the receiver halves coming apart. 7. If you have grips that wrap around the receiver halves, take the grip bolts out with a 5/64" allen wrench so that it doesnt interfere with the receiver halves separating.
Note: Before you take the 98c apart, you could put it in a big plastic bag and disassemble it (see step 8) to prevent losing small parts. I believe that KRL15 is the one who came up with that.
8. Take the little rubber piece off of the cocking knob, and make sure the marker is decocked to prevent flying parts. 9. As you pull the receiver halves apart make sure the end cap isnt attached to the receiver halve facing you, or else the end cap, drive spring, and guide pin may pop out. 10. If the sear, sear spring, and sear pins are on the left receiver half instead of the right, put in them in a safe place, and refer to the picture below for future reference on how to put them back in (ignore the response trigger).
11. Wipe all of the oil off of the gun with a paper towel. (It is highly recommended that so use hoppes 9 or similar oil. Don't used wd-40 or other water-based lubricants) 12. Put a few drops of oil on the rear bolt and rub it around with your fingers. 13. Put a little bit of oil in the sear area. 14. Put a few drops of oil where the linkage arm goes. 15. Put a few drops of oil on the drive spring and guidance pin. 16. Before reassembling the 98c, make sure the ASA screws aren't in their square bolts; this will make it easier to put the receiver halves back together.
If you have more problems putting the 98c back together, refer to this page, or your owners manual: http://www.tippmann.com/support/98customparts.asp
This pic, supplied by Choopie911 is also very useful:
If you dont have an owners manual, call Tippmann at: 1-800-533-4831; they should send you one for free.

Since this looks like a nice little help thread, I have a question for someone. Is there some kind of trick to fitting the left reciever onto the right one? I have everything assembled in the right half, but I can never fit the two pieces together in under 10 minutes. It seems as though the problem is in the trigger assembly. A very frustrating problem and it seems as though many people don't have this problem...

There's not realy a trick; you just have to have everything put on right. Do you lay one end of the receiver half down before the other? Make sure you lay the receiver half down evenly, so that the pins in the trigger assembly go straight in the their holes. Check to see if there's anything stuck in the holes that the pins should go in. How many times have you taken your 98c apart? Sometimes a lack of experience in putting the 98c back together is the problmem; I had prblems putting my 98c together when I first took it apart.

Yea I would add the bolts on the bottom of the grip is tricky (least it was for me the first time) where gas line runs. It can make the grip not want to close all the way. If you unscrew the bolts from the nuts ... then set each of the two nuts in the slots (if they came out) ... it is VERY easy to align the two halfs together. Then after the two halves are together, you rescrew the gas line in and tighten it to the bottom of the grip the same as you tighten the reciever bolts. This is where I found a slight problem when I first put my c98 together. It's very easy now ... hope it makes sense to the newbies (I'm a bit new myself) ... if not BMXer may be able to word it better.

Thanks a lot for the post BMXer! I printed it off and used it to disassemble my marker. Everything went well. There is one thing to look out for though:
If you take the gun apart while it is cocked, don't pull the trigger. I did this and my ball latch went flying and I am still trying to find it.
Thanks again.

Yeah, that would be the thing to do, but next time you, or anyone else has a question like this, please do not ask it in this thread. There are many people on this forum who are way smarter than I am, so you'd probably get a better answer if you made a new topic about it.

when i put mine back together i found out that it is easiest to put the handle in at an angle cause then they suck together alot easyier i found that if u try lining up all pins at first the handle wouldnt go together and the front site spring would pop out if you gave it alittle tap to line up so put the handle in their spot first at a slite angle just enough to slide the cocker through the slot this is how i put it back together without taking the asa off i know this looks confusing it does to me but it is so hard to describe this

I'd probably add to this to ensure that you put the ball latch back in the proper direction, I used to do this when i first got my 98C and it used to annoy the hell outta me trying to figure out whey it was acting up from time to time.
I even took it to an airsmith once... Boy did i feel like a tard, luckily enough he had a good sense of humor about it.

Make sure NOT to put the detent in backwards. I did it once and didn't realize it for a few hours after cleaning it. I immediatly fixed the problem, but from then on I'd chop paintballs like crazy. I thought it was something wrong with my barrel or the breach. I eventually replaced the detent and the problem was fixed. Originally, I had no idea why that fixed it. Now I think that the ball detent was bent the wrong way and therefore held the larger paintballs halfway out of the breach so that my bolt would just slice through them. If you bend your detent, I'd seek a replacement instead of having a headache cleaning your gun every game at the field on a sunny weekend.

from my own personal experience, DO NOT overtighten the power tube bolts-it will rip out the threads and your velocity will be psychotically off each time you shoot it without the bolt in, and it wont recock itself every 2 shots.

Hi folks,
I cleaned my 98C last night and found a few things that might save you a little time when re-assembling.
1. If your receiver halves don't fit together quite perfectly, it could
be due to your tank adapter nuts shifting a bit during cleaning.Try
loosening your tank adapter bolts slightly and your left receiver half
should fall into place perfectly. Be sure to tighten these bolts again
when you're finished.
2. Make sure you detent is facing the right way. It should face away
from the front bolt so that when the front bolt moves forward, the
detent compresses into its compartment perfectly.
If the detent is in backwards, the front bolt will hit it when it moves
forward. It just feels wrong (rough) when you cock and fire.
I learned this the hard way (and had to take the gun apart again to fix it)!
3. That front sight spring is a pain in the butt to put back in place.
Hook it around the pin, then pry the other side (the side with the wire
sticking out) into the rear hole in the front site. Hold the
assembled site spring and site in place, then hook the elbow latch into
place as quickly as possible.
Also, do you all dissassemble and clean your power tubes and valves? I didn't, because it looked a bit intimidating.

Isn't the detent also called the ball latch (newbie alert)
I just got a 98custom 3 days ago and the paintball shop in town isn't open
until tomorrow so I havent even been able to fire it. That hasn't stopped me
from trying to disassemble it. The picture in the book has the gun cocked,
(like a doof, I cocked mine like the picture because I am very visual), took of
the one side and stuff when flying everywhere but I eventually got everything
back together. I will be using this post from now on to take it apart (cool
post).
Onto my question, I stuck the detent in backwards and have been dinking around
with it for a few days before I noticed that it looked kind of funny (I had the
barrel off and was looking at how balls fed in) so I immediately switched it
and I didn't worry until I saw posts saying that getting it backwards warrants
a new one. Tippmann is closed so I can't call to ask them how much one is, but
should I wait to see if it chops paint or just preempt the problem by ordering
a new one?

Hi,
I'm having trouble reassmbling my 98C. I went paintballing for the first time this weekend, and everything on the 98C worked great, except I was getting a leak from inside the gun. I believed this was due to the air supply line going into the gun, so I took it apart, applied teflon tape, and then began to put it all back together.
However, my bolt assembly is different from the one illustrated in the user manual, the pdf on the tippmann sight, and the one illustrated here. My rear bolt has two springs coming out of it, instead of one. I can't figure out which spring goes where... basically, i've tried different combinations to make it work, but after reassembling it, the cocker won't pull back far enough to let the sear catch. Please help. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong here.
There is one spring and a nail-shaped metal piece that you slide through one end of the spring. The other spring set has a spring wrapped around a metal dowel on each end of the metal dowel.
Where do these springs go? Thanks for your help.

Or compressed gas of whatever kind. We played this weekend with compressed air (special tank required but no other mods) and it worked same as CO2 except NO FREEZING. Excellent. Also easy to take a small group out for woodsball as you can take an old set of scuba tanks with you and fill the tanks in the woods. We are new, but learning as we go.

Hey, I got the same problem as axio, I haven't been able to figure it out yet.
I think we both have the ACT, or anti-chop-technology, models. They
have two extra springs and two extra matal parts. I was able to put the
spring from the regular 98 custom back in, but this one stops me from
cocking it all the way. I would appreciate it if someone could help me
out.
In the worst case scenario I could return it and say it jammed on me.

Okay, i took apart my gun last night and everything went fine. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the endcap did not fit in nice and snug. It came out of the back of the gun just a little bit. So, I took it apart again and looked to see if the cap was fitting in the threads right, and it was. I do not think this will pose a problem, but has anybody else had this happen to them? Thanks

When I was putting mine back in I started to tighten up one of the screws and just the top of the thread like in the one like just fell out, I didn't use pressure or anything when putting it in. Now I have to push the one screw in a tiny bit for it to catch but it still tightens up just fine so I think im ok.

The other day I was taking mine apart, missed the part in the manual about turning the velocity screw all the way in.
The gun won't fire now, what could be a solution for this problem? Does it have to do with me removing the screw?
|
Posted By: Fuzzey5-0

The reason for threading the screw all the way in, I can only imagine, is so when you remove the receiver halves, it does not damage the valve threads, in the power tube. Aluminum is a very soft metal. Especially so, in these guns.
As for "the gun won't fire now" i'd recommend describing the symptoms a bit more... do you have air leakage? Will the bolt react, but the paint not project? Details are key here...

Hi, I have a tippmann 98 platinum, and I can't figure out how to take apart the front sight (where you push down on it to release the hopper). It got hit with some paint, so I need to clean inside there, but unlike the normal 98, it's locked in place and I can't pull the pin out. I tried with pliers and the pin wouldn't budge. What's the trick to it? The manual wouldn't say. Thanks.
