they have padding on the sides for your thighs and usually a softcup built in.  they protect your thighs as you slide and your butt too i think.  The cup protects the family jewels.  I think they are uncomfortable but I may have tried on the wrong size... who knows.

Well, they kind of do.  Some have padding, others are just tight on you.  They kind of feel like under armour.  They keep on your legs, so when you slide, they dont slide up and the ground wont cut you up(baseball=rocky field sometimes).

They do help protect parts in the slides lol
