So I am pretty new to paintball (playing 5 years now) and I have only played once at a “real” field. I have played many times at outlaw fields, with the majority of my games at my own private field in my backyard. I typically play fall/winter/spring. Speedball looked interesting. Except it is expensive and (no offense) ugly to set up a speedball field, I didn’t want to spend a fortune on blow up bunkers which wear out, or large pallets, and drainage stuff to litter up the farm… But, I can grow a serious weed patch… Which I can easily mow removing any evidence of the wars that have taken place on that parcel of land. So that is what I did. I let it grow all summer, only mowing it in the early spring to reduce the briars. I keep my shooting range mowed, and let the rest of the 1 acre field just grow. Then once the grass stops growing in late October, I mow a D pattern into the field, followed by 15 foot zigzagging and a couple of interior shooting lanes. The size is pretty large, with 150 feet between the two flags. And the D goes out to about 175 feet at the furthest point. So you can shoot across it from one side to the other, but unless your gun is accurate at long distances, it is hard to get a hit, and very fun. My mower is 62 inches so the paths are only about 5 feet wide. The rules are simple. You have to stay in the field. You can’t go on the shooting range, except at the ends of the D where the flags are located. One hit and you are out, regardless of breaks (we don’t play with refs, so it is honor system). You have to wait until you enter the shooting range to start firing. (So no one can just fire from their flag and eliminate the other team waiting to enter the field of play). If you eliminate the entire other team, the game is over, and you don’t have to capture the flag. We have played this with up to 16 guys playing, (8 vs 8) it is VERY fast paced, and the weeds act as cover, as many times paint breaks when it hits the weeds. You can stay on the mowed paths, (faster) or go through the weeds. When standing, your head/shoulders are pretty much all that show. So we usually have a bunch of headshots. One side doesn’t grow as good so it usually is shorter than the other side. This is a very fun way to use a ton of paint, and have a blast with your friends. I call it, Fieldball, at the “Field of Doom”. This footage was shot this year, 4 vs 4. We played three different days on the field (we play monthly) and I don’t have footage from all our games, when it snows it knocks down all the weeds. So the fact that it is only there for a short time, adds to the fun when it is finally ready to use. Forward this video on if you liked it, subscribe to my many other outlaw style paintball video’s on youtube. Please post any input you have on this concept. That looks like a fun paint burner, FE. I too, am an "outlaw player". We have a piece of land out east here on Long Island we play all year long and like yourself, get together once a month for a game day. We have anywhere from 8-40 people playing. Some of our guests come from as far west as Staten island and New Jersey, 80 to 100 miles travel distance. We want to make sure everyone will have a great time so we have a little paint burner we like to play called "The Gauntlet" inspired by the Clint Eastwood movie.
The playing field must be a narrow channel, 30-50 yards wide by 100 yards long. Our field has two 15 to 20 foot high berms that run parallel to each other and are about that length and width as described above. The rules are pretty simple. Two teams, Attackers who run through The Gauntlet and the defenders who wait within The Gauntlet. Attackers will have the superior numbers, example 10 attackers against 4 defenders, must run through The Gauntlet, capture the flag and run it into the goal 30 yards beyond the flag station. However, the attackers have no paint other than what is in their hopper and have 5 minutes to take the flag and run it into the goal. The defenders hide in The Gauntlet. Defenders must choose a suitable spot they can defend from and can not move from that spot. They are in a fixed position and have only the paint in their hopper and one full pod. Defenders may rotate within their position but may not from it. Defenders win by complete elimination of the attacking team. We have had crazy fire fights playing this game and so far it is a complete success. Give it a try and enjoy. Post some feed back if you try this game. |

Cool. That sounds like fun, and I have the perfect place to play that version as well. We have a trail that goes back into our woods, and I've been trying to think of a good game that we could play to "start" the day, As many guys get their early have to sit around waiting... I could send them out first and let them get hidden.. Then put all the gear in the trailer being pulled by the tractor, and have the "attackers" have to get to the tractor to win, which will be parked at the end of the trail.
I'll have to think about that, it sounds like fun.

Me, Shorty and Tallen have played a similar game at Picasso's. A few years ago. It was on some property bordering some power lines and the grass was taller than most of us. It was thick like elephant grass. It was always intense.

One of the places I played back in the mid 2000s had a swamp like that. If you were quiet you could pass within feet of another player without them realizing it. I played it pistol only a few times and it worked out fairly well for me. |

That is so true. I was playing last year, and I was crawling through the weeds, when I saw my buddy Ross (who was on the other team). I froze, and waited, and he kept crawling toward me. when he got about 10 feet away from me, I whispered to him, (proximity kill, you are out). He said... "Ain't no way you can hit me in all of this, if you want me out shoot me.".
I unloaded on him, and never hit him the weeds just broke the paint.
We both ended up jumping up and running at angles away from each other firing. With both of us missing each other! One of his other team members shot me from across the field.
It was pretty funny, and a ton of fun.
Here is some footage from last year, I live near Oxford Ohio.
