Topic: Is over 300 fps possible from stock A-5Posted: 21 August 2004 at 9:30am |

I've just started playing paintball with some friends. Everyone has new guns and we have been told that we need to get a chrono to make sure we are shooting at a safe speed. One of my friends has a new A-5 and they said that their manual says the maximum FPS for their gun is 270-280 depending on paint. I'm pretty sure his gun is shooting much harder than that. He claims there is no way it could be unless it is modified. Can someone point me to a web page that clearly explains this. I need to know if it is true that there is no way for a stock tippman to shoot harder than is safe. Thanks. |

no what the manuel means is you shouldn't play over that fps.
My 98c was shooting 360 out of the box. |

yea what that means is the A-5 should not be fired over 300 ever hoping that its not is putting everyone he plays with in danger. A-5s can shoot very hot just like any gun if its set wrong. go to a feild and chrono it before you play next

if you are shooting over 300fps it will bust the lens on a mask. (lenses manufactured to resist 300fps, but n e thin higher will break it). yes an a5 will shoot much harder than 300, hhave your friends throw in 15 bux a piece and buy a chrono.

The one we bought was shooting 340fps right out of the box. You most certainly should use a chronograph before playing to make sure it isn't shooting above 300fps. The store where I bought mine has a chrono

all right lets be serious im around paintball guns and real guns all the time and i know a A-5 can shoot over 300fps stock especialy if u use co2 its been know to cause sudden shooting fps spikes close to 400 fps and honestly if u use the minimume proper protection that baal wont kill u trust poeple get shot with 12 gauge benie bags at 800 fps and they live well most the time atleast lol, but if u do use co2 i really consider usin a x chamber for ur A-5 it realys stops those sudden kinda dangerous fps spikes

Sometimes when I fire my gun the velocity screw comes looses and turns out. I was shooting 340 the last time I went to chrono it at the local field whose max is 265. Lucky I got it fixed before anyone got hurt.

Yes, a chrono is one of your best investments. Last game my marker was set at 290, and a few weeks later (today) we clocked it at 386. This is a brand new Custom 98, so im guessing the same can be done with yours. Just please dont exceed field regulation of 300 or else there will be some serious injurys. |

Ok, thanks for your input everyone. As far as needing a Chrono, couldn't we just have everyone shoot a board and dial their guns to a similar velocity that seems appropriate. According to the specs none of the guns we have shoot over the std 200 feet. Because of the relatively short range at which most of our shots are going to occur, there’s probably no need to be able to shoot over 150 feet, meaning we could all dial down our guns a bit to avoid painful shots as that’s not the intention. What are your thoughts, would this work or do we need a chrono? Edited by jdiddy |

Go to an archery shop , or a gun/archery dealer in your area , you can get them relatively cheap (chronographs ) maybe 30 bucks ? , and save your self and your friends a lot of grief down the road . What you suggested isnt a very good alternative , but its better than nothing , most paintball markers are capable of shooting in excess of 300 FPS Most fields will let you chrono your marker for free , thats the best way , get it chrono'd , Please, |

a woman at the field i play at told us she got shot by some kid with a
shocker from like 10 feet away and it broke the skin and left a nice
big scar (she wears long sleeved padded jerseys to) and she took his
gun and chonyd it and he was shooting 325 so she took his shocker apart
and and gave it to him in a bag and the guy that owned the field
wouldnt let him play w/ his shocker for the rest of the day

Absolutely not. There are all sorts of crazy ideas to measure velocity of a paintball, but the only SURE way to know how fast your gun is shooting is with a chronograph. For as much as most people spend on their paintball equipment, chipping in to get a chronograph is not a serious expense. You can buy a new chrono for somewhere in the neighborhood of $60-70. Many people have barrels that cost more than that. It's not good enough to chrono at the shop a day or more before the game, ambient conditions (temperature, etc), especially with CO2, can drastically change how fast your gun is shooting. Have fun, but be safe. I recommend getting a chrono. Edited by Shub |

also a lil loctite on the velocity screw helps before you set your velocity, the tippmann's seem to come with very loose velocity screws. the loctite just seems to help keep the screw from backing out on you. make sure you use loctite BLUE!!! any other loctite, and youll have to use Fire to get it to loosen up. again Blue Loctite Threadlocker and yeah i just purchased a chrono for $73 bucks then shipping. ill see if i can get the website for you. there isnt a pic on that page, but if you go back home and select chronographs, youll find a pic of what it looks like. the one i purchased usually runs over $100, so this is a great price.
