Hello All,

After playing a few times and renting or borrowing friends paint ball guns, I decided to get my own.  Picked up an A5 the other day and played yesterday.

It performed perfect!  Shot reliably at any speed, not chops, freezes, etc!

One thing that did concern me was its accuracy after 15-25 yards.  It had "ok" grouping up till that range, but then the ball would go in just about any direction.  I wasnt using $100 per 2k cases, but they were still ok (about $50..not the $30 variety).

I talked to a few other people with modified A5s during the day to see what they had done.  I don' think there were 2 people with the same barrels, stocks, etc...

I'd like my first upgrade to focus on accuracy and/or range.  I know the range will always be limited by the fields 280+/- fps limit, so I'd rather get my groupings as tight as possible.

Rate of fire / tank capacity isnt a big concern as I tend to shoot in small bursts rather than sit back and provide cover fire.

I'm "assuming" that means my first upgrade should be the barrel, or maybe better paint next time.  I've read several posts on here about the flightline, but it sounds a bit tempermental.

Any suggestions?  More info needed from me?

Your first upgrade on any Tippmann should always be a barrel. Lapco Bigshots and J&J barrels are very good.

Don't go flate line, Not worth it..... Get a Whisper barrel. And then Id deffinatly get a Egrip. thos things are the best upgrade you can get for a Tippmann A5.

for a barrel... i'd recommed any of the custom products barrels.

the classic, aka one piece, barrel is what i use and will always use on any gun that i own.  it is up to par with the lapco, and i believe a tad cheaper and quieter. 

i opt for the 14"... longer, and you don't see any more accuracy, shorter is just well... too short for me. 


another factor that is definitely over looked for accuracy is consistency, that is, how consistent the pressure going into the gun is.  assuming you have co2, a regulator could be used along with an anti-syphon tube in your tank.  this will eliminate all velocity spikes and keep the pressure relatively constant, resulting in more accurate shots.  for a regulator, palmers stabilizer is the best bet for co2.  if you do go this route, remember to sweet spot the reg.  back out the velocity screw all the way, then use the regulator pressure to bring it down to the field's velocity limit.

thats wierd, i have an expansion chamber, not a regulator and its supposed to eliminate all the volocity spikes, when infact, it doesnt. anyway, other then that, get a barrel, the lapco bigshot is very good, and very loud, ide reccomend it.

Your first barrel should always be a "cheap" one. I say "cheap" because you dont want one of teh $20 ones that arent worth a crap, but you dont want to go spending $120 on a barrel if your new to the sport.

I would suggest either a:
Lapco Bigshot-$45-50
or
J&J Ceramic-$30-35

Also make sure your paint fits the barrel properly. You want the paintball to be able to be blown out of the barrel without much force(yes, actually blow the paint out with your mouth). If it rolls out, or is hard to blow out, it isnt a good fit.

An expansion chamber is not supposed to deal with all velocity spikes, its supposed to help keep them fewer and less of a spike when it does happen. Not even a reg can solve all velocity spikes.

sounds like the bigshot 14inch is the way to go for a first barrel.

I checked out their site and it appears to only come in 1 diameter (.689).  Polished or beaded.  Which finish will match the A5 the closest / stock look?

Bead Blasted will look best with the stock paintjob on the A-5.

what differences (aside from length) exist between the 14inch and 12 inch lapco barrels?

From my experiance their really is no difference though I did hear a couple things:
1. Anybarrels going above 16 inches wastes more Air ---I believe thats true!
2. Lapco RULES!! ---Personal Experiance sorry had to put it in..
3. More Boreing-- More barrel boreing should make the barrel more quiet, because it disperses extra air out form the barrel.

-I would suggest you go for the 14 inch barrel, just because it is longer and may guide the ball better to the target, in other words I think the 14" Lapco Bigshot is your best bet!
