I recieved an e-mail from my boss this morning:

"We need to talk. Please be in my office by 9am this morning."

Thats it. Nothing further.

I'm a little bit nervous right now, trying to recall anything I did/didn't do that could warrant such a curt and ill-foreboding message.

The tone of it is very suspicious. It is rather foreboding isn't it.

However, this may not be about you. Is there somebody else that you might need to consult with your boss about? Maybe another staff member? Could it just be that they were in a hurry and we're projecting the negative tone onto it?

You know very well that reading a meaning onto an e-mail message is asking for trouble.

I dunno, the boss is a pretty laid back guy and I like working for him, but when he gets irritated, things get bad, quick. He's never been really irked with me so far, so I really don't know what to expect.

Who knows, this time tomorrow, I could be unemployed, so I'll have all kinds of time to spend here.

reif, maybe, but this dude is a very well put-together guy. He usually says exactly what he means, and I usually get some kind of hint as to what he needs to speak to me about in his messages. I know its impossible to convey tone through e-mails, but I know the man well enough to know that if this wasn't something serious, he'd have made mention to it in the body of the message.

Nice, but if there's a real problem, I might just end up with each donut wedged firmly into my buttocks, and I don't even want to KNOW what would happen to the coffee.

I wouldn't assume there is a problem.  Maybe he just wants to talk.  Maybe there is good news.  Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Bosses generally don't go out of their way to phrase their every-day communications so as not to freak out the subordinates...

You exposed the office lady's incompetence, I'm sure she's trying to get rid of you somehow or frame you for something. I suggest burning her house down.

Weren't you banging his daughter a couple of months ago?

But seriously, the tone isn't encouraging, but it might also be just that, a talk. Keep the chin up, don't appologise for something you haven't done, and go in there with a positive attitude.

And if you do get fired, call his wife a monkey, go get drunk, and work out a way to bang his daunghter.

Judging by your previous post about the staff's level of competence, its probably a minor computer issue.

Well, it wasn't a minor issue. Essentially,y I have 30 days to convince him that my contract is worth renewing in July.

The short story is, when I first started working around here, I was running like a decapitated chicken getting machines hooked up, running wires, etc. Now that that's settled down, a year and a half into the position, I've settled into more software oriented tasks that require seat time over leg work. The difference has been noted, and chalked up to a backslide in work efficiency. We're undergoing a building project and hes concerned that my abilities based on observations that he's made recently aren't up to the demands that will be set upon me by the project.

I've got another meeting with him in a week where I present a work log, as well as my rebuttal to his criticisms. I didn't try to do that today, because he was pretty steamed and it would have looked like I was arguing with him as opposed to discussing. We both realized this and I've got a week to put together a comprehensive log of work I've done.

What chaps my ass though, is I was encouraged to be 'proactive' instead of 'reactive' in my work. How can you do that when your job is to troubleshoot day-to-day problems?

There were a few things that irked me pretty good that I won't get into, but he did have a point or two that was worth taking into consideration. I think I'll have his mind eased when I meet him next week again with something to show him.

you should also point out that some problems are due to the fact that they wont send you to the training seminars to learn how to properly operate the systems that the school bought.

This is the whole problem of putting people who have no IT experience in charge of people who's sole job is to keep systems running. People just don't understand what all it takes to keep everything running.

Thats just it. My job has evolved from me running from room to room trying to fix computers to  spending more time behind a desk and on the phone with support personnel, sales representatives and our ISP....the lack of viability is translating into inability. I can't flip out at this guy because I want to keep my job, but at the same time I'm really sort of offended that there was no inquiry before an official rebuke.
