I've been thinking about my choice of major (pharmacy) a lot lately, and the more I do, the more I realize I don't think this is what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. I have come to the realization that I don't care about any of the classes I'm taking. If this was really something I wanted to do, wouldn't I at least care about going to class and studying? It's just that I feel so jaded about everything right now. I hate this town, most of the people here, and my courses. I'm doing pretty crappy gradewise right now in a few classes (BioChem, Physio, Stats) and it's finals week, and I feel like I barely care enough to study. I'm basically forcing myself to right now.
I'm seriously considering going into something else. I don't think the healthcare profession is for me. I think I'd enjoy biology, computer science, or design more. Hell, even culinary arts. There are some problems associated with this though. If I change my major, I'm going to have to end up changing schools. My girlfriend is here, and I'm really concerned about how she is going to deal with me not being here. Also, I feel like I've wasted nearly 3 years pursuing this and a ton of money as well. I'm worried about what my parents would say. Obviously this shouldn't be an issue, but pharmacy is good money, and I'm worried about being able to make enough in something else. If I can make it through this year, I'd probably be set, but I don't know if I want to. This has been bothering me a lot lately, and I just don't know what to do. A good part of me wants to throw in the towel and start over. I just don't feel like I'm cut out for this. I'm really sorry for the livejournal post. I wouldn't have posted this, except it's killing me, and I really would like to hear some advice before bringing this up to my family/friends/girlfriend. |

4 year program? If so, I say stick with it until the end, and find out how the actual job is.

how long do you have left i say stick with it. If you feel that you dont want to do Pharmacy anymore, atleast you have the experience to do it later in life if you feel the want to do it again. Im feeling the same way with the schooling that im doing. Criminal justice 17 months out of 18 and im thinking do i really want to do this, well im going to finish so at least i have the degree under me even if i want to do something else with my life. Stay with it get the degree or what ever your getting to show that you at least tried. |

Do what interests you the most. I left the University of Memphis mid semster because I discovered computer engineering did not cover the networking field I wanted to get into.
Just make sure you have a good idea of what you want to do before you leave that school. |

Pharmacy kinda seems like a major that can't really lead into much else if you get that degree. If you aren't enjoying it now, do you think you are going to enjoy it for the rest of your life? I know sometimes you have to do JOBS that you don't like, but if this is going to be your CAREER you better be pretty sure you are going to like it for the rest of your working life.
Just my 2 cents. |

If it wasn't a 6yr program, I'd say stick with it.
In my experience... it doesn't really matter what your degree was, but more that you have a degree. Half of my friends are in careers that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the degrees they earned. To include both myself, and my wife. You're halfway through. Still a long way to go... IF you were to transfer to another school, how many of your current credits could be applied toward another degree? If you can apply most of your credits and be done somewhere else in a year, or maybe 3 semesters... then no real loss. If you've taken such specialized courses as to be wholely useless in a different degree... then that's gonna be a hard bridge to cross in regards to your parents if they're the ones footing the tuition bill. What school do you go to now, where you couldn't simply change programs while staying? And how far away would your prospective 'new' school be? As for the girlfriend... as much as you don't want to hear it... this is a true sink or swim test. If you both can stay together despite a relocation... then you're golden. If there's issues involved in that, then it wasn't meant to be anyway. Don't be dissuaded from the career if the only things bringing your spirits down right now are your grades in a few classes and a tough round of finals, and the fact that your college-town and the people within it suck. None of the above reasons are "good" in my opinion, as far as determining your career path goes. If you have other reasons, that's fine... but please don't toss three years of school and prospective well-paying employment because you're currently surrounded by tools. (You won't escape them by relocating... trust me!)

I go to Ohio Northern U. It's too expensive for me to be there for any other reason than pharmacy. I really don't think very many of my courses would transfer besides a General Educations courses. Basically everything else I've taken so far is for Health Sciences.
I'm just not sure if I really want to be counting pills for the rest of my life. Obviously I know there's more to being a pharmacist than just that. |

Dunno. Tough call. I'll assume you're out-of-state if tuition cost is deemed too high to otherwise stay. Sucks that only your GenEd stuff would transfer. Sets you back at least a full year. But... if there are other determining factors as to you wanting to switch up... I guess deciding now is better than deciding later. From this point forward, you're only adding classes that can't be used elsewhere. Only problem in that now... is that it doesn't appear that you're sure what to switch to. Quite a bit to think about... whether to switch/what to switch to/where to go... all during finals week? Sure you can't put off all this decision making and brain-strain until after your exams? |

What do you do for fun? What do you enjoy in your free time?
Can you make a living through a variant of any of those things? It might not just give you an answer straight up, but its a good place to start. |

welcome to college.
I went from biomedical engineering, to math, to medical technology. which, in reality, is pretty far from each other. but i found what i want to do. i found the worst part is telling your parents, especially if they have a lot invested in your college education like mine did. good luck with whatever you do. |

How did your parents react, PCF? I've already been hinting at mine that I wasn't doing all that well and I was just trying to get through the material. If I screw this quarter up, they might pull the plug on all this anyway. I guess I'll just have to see how I do, and I'll have "spring" break to figure things out before the next quarter starts.

QFT. I'm not really sure what to tell you though. How long has this been on your mind? |

I've thought about this not very seriously in the past when "things" have hit the fan in the past on and off. Been thinking about this a lot for the last week or so.

Well, I think everyone tends to think like that when stuff isn't going right. It sounds like just recently you've started considering switching degrees seriously. I'd give it some more time, and find out whether or not you really don't like the profession, or if you just really hate the environment you're in right now. |

they were obviously upset, obviously because they paid for over a year of private engineering school, but they weren't that upset about me knowing that i didn't like what i was into.
The biggest thing that came across, was concern for me to find what I wanted to do, as soon as i can i think it helped that my parents each switched schools a bit too. |

Neither of my parents went to college, so sometimes I think they have difficulty understanding how things are. I'm not good at making decisions like this. It doesn't help that I've been feeling kind of depressed/apathetic a lot lately. I think it's seasonal depression. I really can't wait for spring so I can get outside and go kayaking and fishing a few times.

I think all of that has a lot to do with it. It'd give it some time before making any decisions or ever seriously considering anything. |
