Well, heres the Flying Squirrel who overtook one of our Blue Bird houses. He cool though because they are pretty rare around here. We named him Rocky, you can figure it out. Tapped on the side of the bird house so he would come out.

If by rare, you mean, they have a huge population everywhere in Michigan, than yes... You're right. You have the southern variance, which is common as mice. The northern variant is the rare type, as the southern have been invading it's territory. I have a few northerns that come to my window feeder each night, and a bunch more southerns. Nice shots. I know that they are in Michigan, but I meant as in my specific area. I've never seen one before this guy moved in.

As I recall, you're in the southern reaches of the state, trust me... Their there, chances are that one chose your box because other pairs have already taken all the local nesting areas. Listen in the woods at night for shrill whistling, their flying squirrels. Also, I don't advise tapping the box to often... It's terrible for them to come out in the day, as they are completely nocturnal, and if it's bothered enough, it will abandon the box, even if it has pups. |

Livingston is south to me, I am in Alpena. You have to be fairly familiar with the Fliers in order to distinguish them, and the only true way is blood testing. However, southerns tend to be smaller, more of a gray color, and the belly fur remains white all the way up to the brown fur. All of which fits your squirrel. Also, your squirrel has some mange, clean that box out at the end of year. Edited by *Stealth* - 17 May 2008 at 10:23pm |

Oh I see, and I wish I lived in Alpena. I ride quads up there and what not I love it. We're actually thinking of selling our cottage in Caseville and getting something a little farther north near Alpena or somewhere isolated from people.
To bad the little fellow is a night critter, I'd love to see some of them things jumping tree to tree. |
