what if we shaped paintballs like bullets and put fins on them to stabilize them in flight and actually make use of rifling in barrels.
thatd be cool huh? then we really could be 1337 paintball snipers!!!!!! http://www.actionvillage.com/001-343-0004 ![]() apparently the idea wasnt too far fetched..... |

I've seen them in person, its half of a sphere with a "skirt" on it.
I will probably buy a pack one day just to try for fun.

I have worked on a police training range and they had a little "village" that they used to run different sceniros and they had bullet shaped rounds that were on metal jackets. I think that would be cool to have if they could be made to use Co2 instead of gunpowder. They act the same as real bullets in a rifled barrel. I like the original idea of this topic as well. I think that if we all work together we could give our ideas freely and help make Tippmann the best PB company in the industry.
SWEET topic BTW.

the idea, or the actual product? i know the idea is old as dirt (as i was kinda making fun of it), but the product is relatively new, i just saw them on AVI's "new products" page, and they usually have stuff for sale within a couple days of a new product being released. The problem is, the round shape of a ball is the reason it breaks. If you shape it like a bullet, it will have much more strength. They may fly farther, but they would be DANGEROUS because the shape makes them NOT want to break. For the newbs, about 20 years ago a paintball bazooka was made using over sized paintballs. Everyone thought it was great until someone was hit in the head and was killed. |

The rounds that you saw the Police use were simunation "Spelling" rounds. I believe they move faster than 300 fps. They are plastic bullet shaped..bullets with slots cut into the front. The when the round makes contact the tip of the round caves in due to the slots and the paint is released through the now open slots. The round itsself if basically a 9mm cut down brass with a primer and a cradle for the bullet. maybe a little extra pouder but i don't think so. The rounds are fired out of a real pistol with a modified barrel. The paint isn't as liquid as paintball paint is. Its tackier or thicker. Expensive, but very useful tools in training. When they hit you, you know about it.
Since the other paintballs got covered...I thought I would cover this one.

Google Tiberius First Strike, and here's a youtube link
It's the same round used in the FN 303 less lethal launcher used by SWAT which is basically a military grade paintball gun.

And Tiberius is now mass producing the "First Strike" for woodsball snipers. Just you buy them in a tube of eight or so and they are pretty expensive.

Mack, I'd have to say that a bullet-shaped paintball (ignoring anything preventing it's manufacture and use) would actually hurt a lot more at 280 FPS, and as motopsycho said, would be stronger, and harder to break.
The shape would absorb a lot more of the impact. Look at an egg. It's been proven that an egg is much stronger when pressure is applied vertically vs. horizontally. I think the same can be said for a paintball. |

If it was a true egg shape, this would probably be so. However, my understanding is that the end is open. This allows for a "crush zone" that an egg doesn't have. Additionally, the rounds have a "brittle polystyrene" shell as opposed to standard gel-cap shell to allow easier breakage on target. I haven't played with these yet, but some friends who tried them at a recent big game say they deliver as promised.
An additional note on the "hitting/breaking harder" is that one of the articles I read on them mentioned that they were designed to perform in accordance with ASTM requirments at normal paintball velocities. Note: My friends were impressed enough with them that I will probably give them a try. (Lord knows I don't have enough paintball stuff already. ) |

Oh, on the Tib rounds, I agree. No noticeable difference. But I was talking about bullet-shaped paint in general, which is what I thought you were talking about. After rereading your post, turns out I misread it. My bad. :)
