Follow me here. I have an older 98 Custom  with a serial less than 1 million. I love the way that sear/bolt combo fires. Very easy to rapid fire with no upgrade. I recently bought a "new" 98 Custom with a 5 million serial number. For lack of a better description, that trigger blows! It has a ratcheting effect and requires the trigger to be fully cycled to reset, unlike my older one that  you just have to pull enough to disengage/fire and resets without a full trigger pull.

My question is: Can I get the same, or better performance out of the newer gun, that I don't like the action of, with a Response Trigger?  I called Tippmann and they said I had to go E-Grip. Looking at the Response set-up, it looks like same sear as the older gun that I like.

The older and newer 98 Custom have different sears.
Yours will get better.  You can tune the trigger, but it involves having an assortment of springs on hand.
Try a double trigger.

Good luck
