The RCMP will give its Parliament Hill detachment officers some extra firepower, after deciding to bring previously purchased submachine guns back into service.
...
Though the MP5 is technically a submachine gun, Cox said the RCMP weapons have been altered to be semi-automatic in function, meaning that a single bullet is released with each trigger pull.

So, exactly HOW does this give them more firepower than a 9mm sidearm?

Hey bri, what were you issued in Afghanistan, a Nerf gun?

So, from the sounds of it, the Parliament Hill detachment officers are being issued Tippmann A5s?

Don't forget the higher capacity magazines.  (42 pages--all pictures.)

Speaking of pictures; the soldiers in the picture above really need bike safety helmets.  (They would be that final touch to make it "just right.")

Hey bri, what were you issued in Afghanistan, a Nerf gun?

Significantly higher accuracy due to the longer barrel, and by virtue of being a shoulder fired weapon. Ottawa police also has about eighty cruisers with our version of an M4 carbine in the back; these ones with 10" barrels, 30 round mags, EOTechs, and surefire foregrips. Ottawa police also has a full time tactical team, and lets not kid ourselves and assume there isn't something else kicking around my nation's capital that we don't know about. JTF2 is also based about 45 minutes away.

The MP5s are being issued, from what I understand, to pretty much all Parliament Hill officers as essentially a 'patrol carbine'. Parliament is not a good area for full automatic fire. Don't think for a second that this is the sum total of Parliament's security.

For what it's worth, many Capitol Police carry shotguns, and most carry only pistols.  Then again, there have to be a couple hundred of them around the Capitol, and there are still dozens with M4s.

One of the coolest things I saw in DC when I was there in 11th grade was the Secret Service escorting someone past the Capitol.  Half dozen Suburbans filled to the brim with suits, all of whom appearing to be shooting laser beams out of their sunglasses at the crowds.  It was really pretty impressive.

On the contrary. If Parliament was in session, it'd probably do more good than bad if you catch my drift

As for knowing that parking lot in the photo, quit stretching the truth Bri, we all know you're the one in the trailer.

Yeah I'd take a semi MP5 over a handgun any day of the week.

Being a shoulder fired weapon, with better sights and a longer sight radius it is better than any handgun. The only reason for selecting one in semi auto over, say, a semi auto 5.56mm, is it is more "picture friendly" than an assault rifle.

You still see cops with MP5's, so they aren't "evil" yet. Toting an AR makes you look like a soul-less child killing soldier.

I'm willing to bet those are the two cinsiderations they used. 1) It IS better than a handgun 2) it isn't a child killing AR.

They should definitely go with the AK-74s  (with wood stock and grip of course).

When I am king of the whole planet, my cops are gonna be armed with AN-94's with GSN-19's. I WANT people to be scared of them. I don't want smaller, photogenic guns. I don't want "respectable" weapons for them.

When you climb out of a van holding an LM6, people listen to what you have to say.

When the lay man (in regards to firearms) thinks of increased weapon capability, I'm positive that the vast majority of them thinks increased fire rate and perhaps the ability to launch a person farther into the air than a weaker gun.

You can thank the movies for that.

I long for the day that people-launching is in fact a small arms reality.
