Let's just say an incident happened, and you had to either be deaf or blind for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

It'd seem that a deaf person would be more capable at staying self sufficient in most aspects of life, and be able to do a lot more, than a blind person.   Yes, there are self-sufficient blind people, but at the same time there are far more sight-requiring activities than hearing (driving, not falling down a manhole, stalking people, etc etc).

Though I guess when blind, you could keep from feeling alone just by having background noise going on, whilst if you're deaf... well.. it's just what you see (obviously).

Either way it'd suck, but I want to see what others would choose.

(PS-- No cheating and saying you'd rather be mute)

Deaf. TV has subtitles.

Sign language is as good as spoken word when you know it. There's also a lot of deaf community centres too, of course there are blind ones as well but no one ever turns up.

This.
Even if you cant get a hearing aid. You can still watch TV with captioning, wont have to rely on other people for money (Ive had customers ask what bill they gave me. I tell the truth, but I feel a lot of people would lie.)

Id rather learn sign language and try reading lips than never seeing again.

to expand on this, you could see your wife, but wouldn't have to listen to her. Also, going to the beach would still be in play. Can't hear good looking girls.

You can't see boobs if you're blind. So I'd rather be deaf.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Deaf. Definately deaf. I rely on my eyesight way too much. Driving, playing games, shooting, enjoying the world at large.

Sounds are good, and definately add to the experience, but thanks, I'll take my eyesight over hearing any day of the week. +1 for increased self sufficiency.

Having worked with both blind and deaf people, the blind have a more regimented way of life.

Deaf. Though I'm sure I would go insane without sound, I'd feel worse without being able to see.

Deaf.

Medically speaking, the treatments for deafness are much more advanced than those for blindness.

Deaf. I'd absolutely hate being deaf, but my vision is far more important to me.

I wonder what it sounds like, if you will, when a deaf person thinks.  Personally, I think in my voice, but I wonder what it would be like for someone who has never heard their, or anyone else's, voice before.

I'm pretty sure they don't hear a voice in their head. That is why they can read faster, because they don't have an inner-monologue reading along.

Deaf, definitely. For the aforementioned reasons.

Word. That sub-vocalizing is the product of how we are taught to read, and why some people read so relatively slowly.

I have the problem that I read so fast that I have to consciously slow down my speech.  Otherwise people look at me like I'm crazy and have no clue what I said.  I think it may be due to my reading more than I talked while I was in elementary school.
