Tomorrow I will be moving out for the 5th time in the past 7 months, and the 13th time in the past 4 ish years. Hopefully this will be the last one for a few years.  With all of these moves, mostly from college to home and back again, I have developed a nice little system that I find works very well.  I get a box, throw as much random crap into as it can fit, tape it up, then move on.  When I reach my destination, then I will unpack everything and sort it out.  So what is your method?

I've gotten to the point that I throw out anything that I haven't used in the past year and then pack what's left. Then I hire movers, because I'm over renting u-haul trucks and humping crap up and down stairs.

I keep the important/frequently used items organized but for the rest of the junk I just throw it into a box or bag and sort it later.

This is going to be what has to happen when I move next.

I'll be moving in two weeks which is probably be the last time in many years as well. I'll be using the Group B method with plans to sell a bunch of crap on craigslist once I get into the house and start unpacking.

So far I think I'm going to sell all my beermaking stuff and my old video game consoles. I'm trying to decided if I want to bundle the SNES and NES together with their games and controllers or to do each one separately. I've got to see what the going rates are for each first.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

It has depended on the situation.

When I quit the resident assistant job in undergraduate, I was methodical in my packing, because I had a new place already and knew for months I was quitting. I packed everything in specific boxes and in a specific manner.

Now, the exact opposite happened when my ol' lady and I moved from Ohio to back to Florida. I defended my thesis two days before we left, so we had almost no time to pack and sort. She did some basic sorting, like keeping all the kitchen and bathroom stuff together. I, on the other hand, grabbed what I could find and put into boxes, and Sharpied in "Stuff" on top of all of them (She did not find this funny).

We also rented a U-Haul, because we couldn't afford the $4,100 we were quoted by the moving company.

We did, however, hire handymen when we got to our new place in Florida. It was $80 for an hour, which turned out to be a good deal. There was absolutely no way we would have been able to get our washer and dryer up the stairs by ourselves. We tried a step or two, but came to the determination that if she couldn't hold on from the top, the whole thing was going to roll back on me and crush me to death in a humours looking but terrible way.

It was the best $80 I've ever spent. They had the entire U-Haul unloaded and up the stairs in about a half hour.

I should note that the to times i had a bed to move, which is really the only furniture I have moved, my dad came up with his truck hauled it back.  That's about the extent of my organization.

My method relies havily on throwing stuff away before/as I pack.

Didn't do that this time and my house is already full of crap, and we haven't even finsihed unpacking our boxes and we've been here 3 years.

If you have to take it out of wherever it is, and don't need it, don't put it in a box. Throw it the hell away.

We clashed on our last move. I'm more of a "get it all in boxes, garbage bags, anything right now, pick through it later" person.
The wife...she's much more meticulous. This box is for the kitchen  stuff that we don't use, this is kitchen utensils we do use, that's pot holders.....it takes forever for her to get everything all done.

I always make the same mistake when moving. I've done it the past three moves:

  • Tape up rather large box.

  • Unload entire bookshelf/desk into box.

  • Congratulations, I've just made a 250 pound box.

Yeah.....I do this constantly. I feel really bad when I have people come help us move without remembering that I have an extensive collection of hardcover reference books.

..also, what in hell is 'thanks' next to the 'quote' button? Whale, you're apparently getting a 'thanks' from me for the post I meant to quote.

I have moved a lot over the years and we always packed pretty methodically seperating everything as we go. Unfortunately, we always end up with a bunch of boxes full of random things that we leave until th end that are not able to be boxed very well. Packing up and moving while in college was pretty easy as I really only had clothes, furntiure and books. The clothes got packed in the drawers, excepting my hanging stuff and the books got boxed up. I really didnt have much besides that as all my childhood stuff was stored in my mothers attic.

Our most recent move has been a PITA. We have been in this house for almost two months now and we still have a fair amount of crap in the basement and garage of our old house. Not much motivation to move it out until we get a bit on selling it or decide to rent it.

Again, this is why I hire movers. $300 was more than worth it to not have to lift heavy ass boxes and move awkward furniture.

I've used professional movers once before. And I must recommend it.

It took them about an hour to pack up and move an entire flat.

It was cheating because there were some things I didn't take, like stoves and fridge and I left most of the plates and stuff, as well as the beds (semi furnished/equipped apartment).

But I took stuff from every room, including TV's, some dishes and a huge assed sofa.

I shall be hiring professionals from now on.
