Ok, so everyone remembers when GM execs flew into Washington the first time and asked for $30billion and were rejected right? They came back later promising massive restructuring etc and walked away with a $13 billion check? Well... gasip! Looks like they freaking lied to us. OH NO!,  The story is about GM spinning Saab off, but I had to take note of the part where GM is now saying they need $30billion, not the 13 or 18. Hmm, looks like we just got the ole bait and switch. Did anybody except the idiots in Washington REALLY think they were going to change? Dumbasses.

All of these car companies are just looking ridiculous to taxpayers right now. I barely know anything and I could tell you that their business model was and is a joke. They essentially assumed a perpetual increase in America's expendable income, and the last couple years have completely screwed them over. I mean, how many people really need a new car each year?

If I remember correctly, they asked for $30bil in the first place, but Dubya didn't want to make the big decision. He gave them just enough to tide them over for a couple months.
If you paid attention the first time around, you'd have known this was coming.

Also, that ever growing demand has been the trend for about the past 90 or so years... It's really not the auto companies fault that the credit markets and consumer confidence are effed.
Not that those are the only factors involved here (labor costs, etc.) but the financial markets collapsing certainly didn't help anything.

I did state they asked for $30 bill initially, but came back to the table and said they could get by with 13 billion and promised massive restructuring including reduction of labor costs etc. So is the argument that under the Bush administration, typically anti-union, this would have come to pass, but now that we are under Dem control, union friendly, that we are screwed? After they have broken their promises to change, do we finally see them for what they are and let them fail? Is Bankruptcy the only way these companies will ever break the hold of unions and have a snowballs chance in Hades of surviving?

That's the thing that pisses me off the most in this whole situation... The UAW, and their argument for "fair" wages.
If the wages you were charging were "fair," then your company wouldn't be going belly-up.

Of course, that sentiment is highly unpopular in my area (just outside Flint, MI).

This is a very tricky issue for me to seperate my own personal interests from what "should" be done, largely because damn near all of my friends parents will lose their job if the auto industry tanks.
While I'm sure that does change my reasoning some, it doesn't seem that it would be good for America to lose our entire manufacturing base, especially if we like being the "# 1 world power."

I live in NW Ohio, but originally from a state South of Georgia where unions are a dirty word. I am amazed to watch people walk out of a job and watch the plant move to Mexico because they wouldn't agree to work for 20% less. I don't get the mentality.

I'm liking Fords new models, but some if the prices will hurt them. $26k for the new Taurus? BAD! $38k for the 365ish HP SHO version, bad. Pricing themselves out of the market. Beautiful car though.
