No news stories this time, just a few questions that need answering. Primarily the health effects of pipe tobacco. Now I know cigarettes can kill you, yada yada yada, and in my opinion, they are just nasty little things that smell bad (I don't want to debate this). But my great grandad used to smoke pipes, and they gave off a sweet aromatic smell; quite pleasurable really. I've taken kind of an interest in them, but my great grandad died years ago, and I have no one to ask. My main question is: Is smoking a pipe any less dangerous/addicting than cigarettes, seeing as to you don't inhale the smoke? If so, how much safer? You're gonna have to bear with me, I know nothing about tobacco, other than nicotine=addicting. Edited by DeTrevni - 19 October 2006 at 12:54am |

Using tobacco in any form drastically increases your chance of cancer. That includes pipes. Less dangerous than cigarettes? Dunno - but pipes are pretty darn dangerous. Kind of like 150mph is "less dangerous" than 180mph. |

i wouldn't say that it's addicting like cigs because of the amount of nicotine your body is taking in. although you will be taking some in. yes, it's still bad for you, but not as bad as cigs or cigars.

As I suspected. You just don't see the stigmas surrounding pipes and cigars as you do cigarettes.

I smoke Cigars.. and have debated this subject many times... with cigarettes, you actually inhail, but it is normally filtered. Cigars, you don't inhail, Pipe, I'm pretty sure is the same way, just just roll it around in your mouth, then blow it out. If you inhailed pipe (since it's non-filtered) you would basically be doing the same amount of harm as inhailing a cigar... which is just not good at all. So in the end, yes, if you inhail pipe or a cigar, they are both equally bad, and are MUCH worse than cigarettes, because they aren't meant to be inhailed(cigarettes are) pipes and cigars (atleast cigars) arent.

I understand that, and that's another point. Since the smoke never gets into your lungs, does it actually damage them? What kind of crap can you get from smoking a pipe/cigar?

Well, technically speaking, you will ALWAYS get some smoke into your lungs. Honostly, I would be more worried of jaw cancer. Cigar smokers normally get mouth\jaw cancer more-so than lung cancer (if they smoke correctly), same with Pipe smokers.

I don't think any of these images are forum appropriate, but I suggest a google image search for "mouth cancer".

That is a very dangerous misconception. Cigars are just as bad. You have just as much chance for mouth/tongue/lip cancer as you do with any other tobacco product. I like Cigars, but lets be honest. |

Well, on that, I was talking primarly on Lung Cancer.. which is much higher with Cigarettes because you actually inhail... so I wasn't "lying" on that factor. And as I listed a post or two above this, the main problems with Cigar\Pipe smoking is the risk of mouth\jaw cancer.. not lung cancer which is associated more so with cigarettes... this makes me want to go get a Hooka lol. Basically, yes, they are just as dangerous.
However, one thing I am thinking about, but am not sure of it's overall impact: Generally one smokes far less when they use a Pipe, or Cigars, right? |

That is the decent argument if there is any. Most people do not smoke Pipes/Cigars as frequently as cigarettes. I am not sure if studies have shown if amount of contact even varies in or not though. This is a job for more research man. |

Right. This is as I pretty much figured. Clark, I've seen some mouth area cancer sufferers in DARE way back in the day. Not a pretty sight. I've heard some misconceptions, Wiki didn't really help, and my folks had no idea, so I figured I should ask you guys. I didn't really intend to smoke anything anytime soon, but I figure I've got a healthy 60+ years left, not taking account of possible intervention, so there's always the future. I figured I should get a collective opinion. Thanks. And Whale, I'll have to find some good stats. Edited by DeTrevni - 19 October 2006 at 1:33am |

From what I've heard.. certain cigars can be equal to about.... twenty cigarettes (tobaco quanity wise), I can't remember where I heard that from.. maybe from the American Cancer Association.. not sure though. But yea, normally, people who smoke cigars\pipes, do not smoke as often aka (everyday have 6-12). I at MOST, will have two cigars in a day, then not have any for a week or two, maybe three.

I lived at a place for 15 years where we had to have water delivered by truck, the driver got lip and mouth cancer from smoking cigars and cigars only. He was in his 50's and he said he smoked his last cigaratte when he was in his 30's. He had his lower lip removed and when he started driving again, it was disgusting to see him with no lower lip and dabbing at his drool. He ended up getting this amazing prosthetic lower lip that was very hard to discern from a real one, but the reality was he was primarily a cigar smoker.

Of course, smoking a cigar is like chewing on the tobacco leaves at the same time, theoretically. Wouldn't the stem and bit of a pipe offer at least a little protection against something like that?

Well.. if you're that worried, you could buy a filter for your Pipe. They sell them at my cigar store... basically just pop it into your pipe... and it catches the "nasty" stuff.
