7 Years

As a transplanted NY'r today has special meaning. As many of you know I spent a few years after my retirement of the Army with the NYPD, and each day going to work the Twin Towers were there prominant in the sky. Each year the family goes back to NY, and still when I see the hole in the sky it is hard. For the first time I went to Trinity Church, where the rescue workers rested, there are still scuff marks on the pews and the Father will not let them be repainted a monument to the Fire and Police workers who rested there a few hours. Interestingly Trinity Church is less than one block from the old WTC site and was not damaged at all other than a large tree that fell.
I am also fascinated about a man, Rick Rescorla, anyone who has seen the original cover of "We Were Soldiers, Once and Young" book the young LT in the cover pickture is Rick Rescorla. He was the Security Chief for Morgan Stanley in the WTC, as he led his people and others out of the building, accounting for all his people, he sang cornish songs to ease the tension. This old veteran was last seen charging back up the stairs to find and help more people, a true leader, his remains were never found.

Heros are hard to find, from the NYPD, NYFD, to the chaplains and priests who even looking up seeing the tower coming down upon them continued calming those they now knew were doomed.

Let us not forget 9/11, and all the heros. BTW the Opening of the new Infantry Museum is scheduled for Mar 2009, I am going.

Very interesting and an amazing story. Lookign into him now.

I can still remember seeing the smoke from my house, 63 miles away. it was really quiet.  I stood in the middle of the L.I.E. during what should have been rush hour, I stopped my car, got out, in the middle lane and watched the smoke. Not a car in sight. 

Clearly uncalled for but not really that bad.

What years were you with NYPD OS, what did you do?

I didn't know the story of the guy on the book cover- it is interesting.

My father-in-law, a long time NYPD officer was on his way into the second tower just before it fell. He was called back to the shooting range where he worked to lock it down. Luckily.
His daughter and I, not yet even dating, spent the day glued to the television out at college. I remember being pissed off at my roommate for having woke me up on my only day of the week I could sleep in.

Come to think of it. The weather was nice that day, I'm in Michigan but still. I remember coming home after school, talking with the neighbors with my mom and we were all standing outside. Was cool and breezy. I guess in a way I remember everything about that day.
