Inexcusable ratings grab comes to mind.

What is a fox news? Is it something like a rabbit snare?

Sometimes with things like mouse traps and such the tension can be set rather high and delayed reactions can be expected.

Cnn sucks equally as well.

The single media beer bong that everyone drinks from has to be infested with highly contactable diseases.

I don't think it was done intentionally. Not defending a news station I never watch (I avoid cable news like the plague)but my mom DVR'd it so I could come over and watch it after work and I think that Shepard Smith genuinely did not want the ending aired.

That said, let's look at it from a completely different viewpoint-should the news be censored? Full Metal Jacket showed a graphic suicide way back in the early 80's with full on brain splatter, but we still censor the news.

Now me, I don't think car chases qualify as news. But if you own a news company and you're of the persuasion that car chases = good journalism then stick it out to the end. Otherwise when you censor the suicide you take away the element of the disturbed individual and it becomes a PG-13 car chase scene that everyone feels okay with watching for sheer entertainment.

That's the real underlying issue here-if you show the graphic material people feel bad for being entertained by the carnage.

They showed the suspect from the Hollywood Bank Shooting, commit suicide on live tv.

Violence is only ok to show on tv, if it's fiction?

It happened live yesterday.

One of the baseball bloggers always tweets when a chase is on TV, I flipped over to FNC about 10 seconds after it happened. Had no idea what he was apologizing for when they came back until I went back and scrolled up on twitter.

I was watching Fox as this occured yesterday. There really was no direct warning the man was about to shoot himself, it just sort of happened. Why their 5 second delay wasn't able to catch this before it aired on national television I'm not sure, but even still, I'm not going to pass critical judgement onto Fox for this one.

In the apology he said it was kind of the equivalent of when you accidentally lose the buffer on your DVR. So, when it happened, they hadn't had a chance to regain the buffer, and the situation went bad too fast to be caught. Really, it came out of nowhere. Dude was running, and then just stop. Boom. Keel over. It probably would have been close even WITH the buffer.

My buddy was watching it live. I don't really have an opinion on the matter.

Dude was obviously freaking out, no cars around, just the chopper, running and frantic enough to trip over basically nothing. Suicide probably wasn't the best way out of that one.

I was just wondering why this lead to apologies, when one dirtbag offed himself instead of trying to shoot it out with cops, but international coverage of people jumping from the World Trade Centers to avoid burning to death didn't.

You just brought up the journalism ethics question for the ages. It's in every textbook and in every classroom.

Quite honestly that was the most shocking thing about the footage of 9/11 for me. The death, destruction and buildings collapsing was interesting TV, but seeing people make that decision and jump still gives me a hollow feeling in my stomach.

Watching this guy shoot himself didn't even make me bat an eyelid. A good end that others should copy IMHO.

Honestly, the mental health of North America is deteriorating IMHO. My sister had a close friend commit suicide about 6 months ago, my friend's sister offed herself with chemicals in a car, if it weren't for my aunt and uncle doing CPR my cousin would have died after he tried hanging himself in front of my aunt about a month ago, and a 17 year old shot and killed himself in the basement of his own house about 2 weeks ago. It's been a particularly bad year for suicides and it doesn't seem like its stopping. More and more people are choosing to take their own lives despite having the highest standard of living in the world.

^Sauce? I'm not sure whether it's an actual increase in number of suicides, versus more frequent reporting of an already fairly common event. I don't have the data either way, I'd just be curious to know.

There is an awful lot of kids that graduated high school around the same time as I did (2009) that are dead right now. Sad stuff.
