Why dose the tippmann webstie say the flatline has flat trajectory, when other people say it curves the paint ball. The flatline im talking about is for the 98

it puts a back spin on it. instead of an arch like a foot ball it goes straight.

It takes some time to tune in the flatline, but when you are done it definately goes straight. As bravecoward stated, it is only putting backspin on the ball.

I understand the concept that it stays in the air longer, but it has the same velocity, so wouldn't it bounce easier at 200ft? Plus, the flatline is most commonly used by woodsballers. Wouldn't the paintball hit a tree or shrub before 100ft or so?
I may be wrong. I play speedball. |

You're not wrong At less than 200 ft balls often bounce and for exaclty the reason you mentioned. As for hitting a tree or shrub that depends on the terrain...there are plenty of times you can shoot more than 100ft in the woods. Regarding the curve vs straight: The straight is in reference to up and down...flatline balls travels in a line nearly parallel to the ground rather than the more traditional arched shot of other barrels. (See Bravecoward's Diagram above). The curve is in reference to traveling left or right in flight ( i.e. poor accuracy) and is caused by an imperfect installation of the barrel.
The 98C Barrel itself has to sit correctly on the marker, tuning it means making minor alterations to its position until you get it right. EDIT: Happy Seawolf? Didn't realize I'd accidentally wandered into the physics of 3-dimensional ballistics forum. My Bad. Edited by Betterdays |

Well you must understand that a ball shot from a flatline has 2 forces acting upon it. One from the backspin and the other is thrust from the marker. A paintball fired from a normal barrel only has 1 force acting upon it.
EDIT: About the hitting trees, The place we play at has about a football fields length of about 4 foot grass in the middle with about medium density woods around it. There is no problem shooting a flatline for more than 100 ft wehre we play Edited by You Wont See Me |

If you look closely, it still arches down, but very slighty. Remember, gravity is still a factor

Flatlines shoot the ball in a flat trajectory when you shoot the gun normal and level. The axis of the back spin is parallel to the ground. As the ball loses velocity it will spin up then drop suddenly.
Tilting the gun will create a curve. Edited by flankomatic |

What thye mean by this is that if you were to arc your shots using a normal paintball gun you could potentially shoot as far as a flatline. But this is impractical for woodsballers because you would hit a branches if you arched your shot. The flatline isnt mean to give a ton of extra distance because like everyone else stated balls would just bounce. So think of it this way instead. If your a speedballer youll know that you have to put arc on your balls flight path( tilt te barrel upwards) to hit the other side of the field. Well with a flatline you could just shoot straight. Both balls go the same distance, lose the same speed in flight, but the flatlines ball is going straight. So for those people who are trying to be snipers and shoot people at long ranges with there flatline its a waste cause the ball will bounce. But for those people who play in heavily wooded areas and need to shoot straight thats where the flatline is especially useful. |

One should put the answers to 2 questions on their signiture:
1. Your viewpoint on Snipers existing in Paint Ball, is it like Big Foot or Halle Barry's figure. 2. Flatline - whether you poo poo it or think its the next best thing since sliced bread This way every time you respond, these mysteries will be addressed for those that aren't using the search feature. I personally never have seen Big Foot with a flatline sniping paint ballers. |

To get into the technical sense, the barrel does not shoot straight up and down.
The tip of the flatline is actually in the downward direction. So, when the paintball leaves the barrel, it is actually moving down. Then the backspin takes over. Because of the backspin, the ball starts to float upwards....then due to gravity will drop like any other ball coming from a barrel. A problem arises when the velocity is too high. The ball will have too much backspin, and the ball will actually continue to rise up higher than you were aiming. I have seen a flatline shoot 30+ feet into the air when the gun was level due to high velocity. |

it curves on some people because they have it set wrong, unless the barrel is set perfectly then the back spin will make the ball go in a odd direction, but once it is set right it will shoot very good and straight, but only get it for woodland...if you do speedball dont waste your money on it, get a freak kit or something

At the field I play at 280fps is max, and useally I run from upper 260's to mid 270's (thank you palmer stabilizer) anyways, I still arc in the long ball and if you twist your gun to the left or right the shot will curve like a slice or hook shot in golf, perfect for getting people hiding behind trees not much larger in diameter than them. If you play woods you want the flatline. |

just becasue the balls wont break on the person doesnt mean it wont
keep them from adavncing, especially when they are behind a wood
bunker, your balls wont break on them but they hear them break on the
wood and know not to come charging out
