Hey fellas, this is my first post and problably not my last.

I just went painballing the other day for the first time in ten years (I was real young)and man do I wanna get back into it! I don't think I'll be a full time painballer because it's an expensive sport but I wanna get a gun and some gear so when I can play I don't have to rent ya know?!

Looking for someone that's not a saleman for advice, I personaly want a marker that has (forgive my rookie talk) a comfortable place to hold the barrel while aiming, kinda like the tipman pro/carbine. At least right now I don't want to hold the marker like a tommy gun. I'm interested in Tippmann because of it's rep for a long lasting low maintnence gun but not sold yet. I'm looking at the custom 98, it doesn't have the grip on the barrel like I mentioned earlier but from what I can tell on my own it's a study marker and if I get serious with the sport I can upgrade it until I'm broke. Is there a barrel I can buy that would put the grip I'm looking for on the barrel? Does anyone think I'm on the right track? I plan on playing in a couple different places so speedball and woodsball would be in the picture.

Anyway those are my basic questions, if any of you experienced guys can throw some open minded opinions my way I'd be very thankful.

Rock on!

Get th 98c, then buy a flatline barrel, looks like a rifle barrel and gains 100 fett of extra distance to your shot. If you do buy it then I would recamend a stock also.

Well your best bet is the pro carbine if you want it to be comfortable when you hold the barrel. Unless you plan on spending a few bucks and getting a 98c then a Flatline or even the A-5 with a Flatline...

Thanks for repying.

So (in your opinion), when people critique the flatline as not being effective up close, are these people just being picky or is having a gun and barrell that big really going to handicap a player in close encounters.

Thanks again

The Flatline does not make the shot more powerful. Its strictly for more range and accuracy. Now people will say its false but those are people that are either jealous cause they dont have one or they're somone that got pwned by someone with a Flatline. The Flatline is a very good barrel.

Thanks for the welcome Dan. Have you used the pro carbine yourself? That was the gun I rented the other day, it physically felt great, but it was so beat up it was hard to get a first impression off of it. I would take a shot at the range and after 20 feet (or less) and it would hook left or right dramatically, I was shocked how bad the accuracy was. At the same time alot of the parts were loose, rusted and abused so I dont want to disregard it if a new pro carbine shoots true. Do you (or anyone else) have experience with the pro carbine? I never see them in mags or featured anywhere. Is there any specific reason not to get this gun?

Well its not the newest gun on the market thats why you dont see it in Mag's. You have to remember it was a rental gun you used. Everything was stock on it EX: barrel. If you got a better barrel for it you would notice the difference on the curve of the paintball.

the flatline is not a good barrel for up close because the bal is still increasing in hight so the ball tends to go over your target if it less than 40ft

In your opinion (anybody reading this), should I just get over the whole "I wanna hold a gun by the barrel" phase, it's what i wanna do but i'm looking in the mags and sites and it seems nobody does it. Do you guys not hold the gun by the barrel because of good technique or lack of options?

For a first day back on the field in a decade I didnt feel like a newbe, I did pretty well even with a gun that was only effective up close. I wanna play speedball and woodsball, What gun would you recomend, Tippmann or not, Holding the gun by the barrel or not.

Thanks again for all the replies!

You could get the procarbine if you want the the grip under the barrel. Keep in mind that it can not be upgraded with out a little bit of work and knowlage with your hands. The 98c is just as sturdy and can be upgraded very easily. If you get the flatline barrel for the 98c you can use the shroud that hold the barrel as a grip.

The 98 custom with the flatline seems to be a highlight in the paintball world. Does anyone here actually own one? If so what's your opinion on close encounters, I know that when shooting close the ball will supoedly go up, but is this i reason not to get it or is it something you get use to or is it a total flaw? Thanks.

Ahhh.... The intimidator seems to be an expensive date, like $1600 or so, do you have. I would never spend that much but I'm curious about how good the gun is.
