Ever sense I was young, I've always been fascinated with the military.  Now that I'm 17, I've got to start planning for the future right?  Well a few months ago I got a brochure in the mail from the Army, just like I'm sure all of you my age have.  So it says "For more information, return this card with your information on it, and we'll send you a free hat."  Well I guess I more of sent out for the hat, but I was still interested in the other stuff.

Sure enough a few weeks later I got that hat with the new brochure, I skimmed through it, and threw it away.  Today, the Phone rings and the caller ID says "US Government" so I was like "Oh this has to be for me"

I answer it and its some Sergeant Pain guy (jk).  "I see your interested in the army, may I ask you some questions to make sure you qualify?"  So he asked random things mainly about my health birthdate, weight...ect.  The whole time on the phone my moms like "No! stop telling him all that your not going into the army!"

So I get off the phone and my moms like chewing me out telling me that I can't join the army.  She told my family about it, and now I'm getting lectures about the army and dieing and stuff.

They just don't seem to get it that I'm not one of those kids that thinks "Army=guns=cool like video games"  I'm interested in the army because of what it has to offer, to serve my country, and just that its a good opportunity.

Theres not much anyone can do about me joining the army, and I have every intention to speak with a local recruiter, its just that I'm getting all this crap from my family, I understand their concern, but I'm not gonna back down especially from something I feel strongly about.

Any of you guys going through this?

My Mother cried for a week when I told her I was joining the Marines.
The Marines forced me to grow up, I got a great education, did some amazing things. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
Do what you think is right for you.

Well its nothing like cool video games but I will say the army is a lot of fun.  I haven't seen Iraq or anything like that but I will soon.  Basic training is a worth while experience that I think everyone should go thr.  If you dont mind going to Iraq and all that good stuff then join.  The army has a lot to offer.  Try not to worry your mother too much.  You won't realize how much family and friends mean to you until you cant speak with them for months or years at a time.  If its something you want to do then go for it.

Joining the Military is actually a good place to learn alot of things and its not mainly bout "how to kill the enemy" I have had friends who joined the Corps, Army, Navy and the Air Force, theyre alot more mature and educated then anyone who still struggling as a College student because the military and "my taxes" is paying fer yer education and if you think bout it...what you learn in the military can be used in civilian life as well and you can apply fer any Goverment position in the States.....I knew I shouldve joined the Corps when I had the chance...my life would be totally different compared to now.

Do what alot of people do and dont tell them.  As long as you can do the sandpit and stand running you will be fine in the army.

I got that same crap from my parents a year ago.

Since then, they've just given up on convincing me to do something else. (It used to be "no, you're not going to join the military, I'm not going to let you" but now it's more like: "Do what ever you want to do, it's your life") (Other than gunsmithing, firefighting, or doing something with music, I just can't see myself doing anything other than the military)

Oh well, I really have no useful information to add to this thread other than:

Do what ever you feel is right. Do something beacuse you love doing it, don't do it for the money (or anything along those lines).

(By the way, are you an only child?)

Most importantly - People suck.

A recruter tried to talk to me at school. Said he thought I would be good in the army. He doesn't know me very well. Unless the have an army that carries paintball guns, I'mnever joining. I have issues with the killing. And all the rules too. I like rules but military comes across as too strict for me.

You can go far with a smile. You can go a lot farther with a smile and a gun.

Plus I could do what Ive always wanted, to fly helicopters.
