Im looking to upgrade from my tippmann. I have narrowed it down to the cocker or the mag because thats what I can afford. Which one is better and why? I love the simplicity of the mag, it doesnt look like it requires much after you get the x-valve and level 10 bolt working good. Cockers also look good but are they easy to maintain?

As long as your cocker works, it works. Don't mess with it, and don't try to "tweak" it unless you want to spend weeks getting to know your local airsmith. If they work, you wipe them down, give them a little oil, and down mess with them other than that.
Both are good guns. I shoot a mechanical 'cocker, personally. I love the hinge trigger and the way it shoots. I've slung a lot of paint with a Mag, too. It doesn't feel as good as the cocker to me. Basically, the 'Mag will be harder to screw up, and easier to fix if you do. But the 'Cocker leaves more room for upgrades and tinkering. |

Alright, both sound good. As I said this will be my first move up from my tippmann. I forgot to mention that I will be keeping whichever one I get a mech. I dont like electrics and really have no need for one. So the option to upgrade to an eblade doesnt affect anything.

Get a mag. I know one kid with an 04 vert. cocker and another kid with a mag. The kid with the cocker is endlessley fixing his gun and the kid with the mag rarely has to fix it. I do like the way cockers shoot though.

Alright, Im really leanin toward a mag. I understand how it works. And since the first thing ill do is take it apart to see how it works the mag sounds better. Anyone that knows does the X-valve automatically come with a level 10? thats the only thing im really confused on. Other than that what trigger frame do you suggest?

That really doensn't surprise me. Anyway I too would say get the a RT mag. The X valve is great and will never give you problems with FSDO. Also the RTallows you to shoot very fast. It will be faser then any mechanical cocker. |

*impartial opinion*
Mags and Cockers are both wonderful guns. I hope to get a ULE-bodied 'mag at some point, and I've already got a Black Magic. That said; how much are you planning on spending? Are you against buying guns used? I know you can find a nicely cared for gun for only $200 or $250. The biggest advantage of 'cockers is also it's biggest disadvantage; it's easy to upgrade. How is this a disadvantage, you might ask? It's easy to mess with something that you don't know about. I don't know very much about how to time a 'cocker; I'll admit it. I know the basic theories on how it operates, and could expain how it fires the ball, but for the life of me can't time it. However, once it's in time, you don't have to worry about it. Mine's stayed timed for almost a year now, solid. I really don't know why so many people have adverse feelings towards Mags; I think they're great. I'm not a fan of powerfeed guns, however, so that limits the bodies I'd prefer down to the Tac-One and ULE bodies. However, that's my personal choice; if you don't mind it don't make an issue out of it. I havn't shot a 'mag myself, but i can tell you this. I've played with people who own 'Mags, and when I ask them to cover me, they do it just as well as some kid with a Timmy or Angel. Keep this in mind; these are all my views on these 2 wonderful guns. Try them out for yourself and come up with your own opinion; you may find that you hate the way a 'Cocker's trigger feels (My little brother is this way). The best advice I can give is shoot both and see what you like. Enjoy! |

Both are good guns. Cockers, however, require a desire to learn and a willingness to tinker. Great fun, and very reliable in knowledgable hands, but potential disaster for the mechanically inept. Hardly ever chop, easy to clean when they do, endless upgrades. Mags are idiot guns. If you can't keep a Mag running you probably need help getting dressed. Not as many parts means not as many possible upgrades. Without lvl10 they can chop, and can be a pain to clean when they do. |

WEll Im up for buying used guns.. Im looking at an R/T pro with x-valve and lvl 10 bolt for 260 right now which is a great price.
Im starting to understand mags more.. Basically from what ive seen, dont take apart the valve or bolt assembly and it should run fine. What really interested me was the mag i saw on webdogradio... i love how the gun shot. Edited by madpaintballer |

uhh madpaintballer, why did you put this poll up because all you've said is you understand how one works and have ignored everything people have said about cockers but as for which ones better it depends on your style of play, cockers are for slow down, aim, fire short, quick bursts to eliminate an opponent, Mags are more for American style aiming: shoot in the general direction till you hit it

Well if youve been paying attention I first asked this when I was looking at both options. Ive found alot of complaints about cockers and hardly any on mags. I was sold on the mag after dazed talked about not messing with the cocker and it will be fine. I have a tendancy to take my markers apart and look at what makes them tick. So the mag is a better option for me. I was basically wondering the pros and cons of both and after reading the posts and doing some research ive decided on the mag. So yes, this isnt really a poll anymore because I have decided.

if you want a gun that will out live you then get a mag, thats my personal experience on the subject. my mags have always worked, always. doesnt matter what hopper i strap on it or what paint, the gun shoots every time, the way i want it to shoot. my cocker worked good too but it didnt work every time nor has any other gun i have used and even if it performs better when its working or looks cooler, it doesnt mean crap when you are sitting on the side lines because your gun broke

what he said... I love cockers...ive used my friend's mag and it was OKAY. Wasn't as accurate as my cocker...it has a freak too...but maybe it was just the paint, i don't know. Its really all preference...you should read reviews and play a game or two with 'em. Have fun. I know I love my prostock (autococker) and i was going through the same thigh as you...i got the cocker and never looked back. |

I would also choose to go with a Mag. I just recently finished building a custom mech mag, and let me say, it shoots GREAT. Here are the specs:
ULE body w/ Rogue Clamping feedneck Splinter Rail X Valve w/ lvl10 & ULT 14" Evil Pipe Kit Bicycle Foregrip RPG Chimera Frame DOP Drop 68/45 Nitro Q Loader system I got the parts from RogueFactor. His name is Shawn, he's a real nice guy with good customer service and fair prices. Here's his website www.themagsmith.com I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Hope it helps! |
