However, unlike babbling idiots, I do not consider Lincoln to be the great man as many others do. He refused habeas corpus, denied states' rights, and did not free slaves based on an abolitionist ideology. I don't understand your use for posting these things. The Civil War and Iraq War are two completely different engagements, regardless of how they are seen in the media. |

You know, given that I live in the south, and live extremely close to the fabled "free state of Winston" I can say that the fallout from that earlier war you mentioned is still felt. Even to this day, there are places that haven't climbed out of poverty, whose kids best bet is a trailer manufaucting plant, and who might be able to read at a fifth grade level by the time they reach graduation, because no good teachers will come to the schools because the pay is so low.
Tell me, do you know ANYTHING about American history, or that period of thime called Reconstruction, and the lasting economic, social, and political problems that have been widespread since? Relating those two wars won't win anyone over to you that really knows what happened during and after the war between the states. I don't participate in arguments about the current war, but as far as your reference to the last war goes, you've failed to make the point you wanted to. |

Huh, I guess he took out his comparison? To those who may see this now, I did not create this topic, the previous post before my first has been taken out. Edited by Dune |

for the record, the only reason Lincoln freed the slaves was to gain
support from abolitionists, and for more forces. Much like the leaders
of our Nation's Army did during the Revolutionary War. Slaves
were escaping and running to the British Army(where they were promised
freedom and a chunk of land). So, George and the boys decided to
promise our slaves freedom as well for fighting....Of course, it was a
lie, so when the war ended, the slaves were forced back into
slavery....It was right, But its all in the past

Dune your arguement of Habeus corpeus is wrong, states aren't guranteed due process, succession is rebellion, and rebellion of states is considered an act of war, law has no room in war (cept Geneva...)

The state didn't invoke it, Lincoln did becuase it was a federal offense. Lincoln refused habeus corpus which is found in the body of the constitution and is granted to everyone regardless of time of war. Especially to the U.S.'s own citizens. Just because they did it doesn't mean it wasn't illegal. |

Ok, let me rephrase it so you can understand my point
States don't get habeus corpeus (due process) becasue they aren't people. The citizens DO get it, but the states are held accountable if they succeed. Succession is an act of war against the U.S. if it is a state suceeding. Due process is in a court of law, states don't get due process because they weren't being tried for anything. Due process is for citizens defense.. can't be sentenced to death without due process... If you don't understand that I don't know how better to explain it |

And let me rephrase it so you can understand. He didn't refuse habeaus corpus to states, he refused it to many individuals, including protesters. That's who I am talking about, and that's why he isn't that great of a guy. You thought I meant states getting it? Come on, no one is that stupid to think you can imprison a state. Habeus corpus is not exactly due process either, close, but not the same.

Habeus corpus is part of due process, not the other way around.
