this is my gun

98c
14" tear drop
tippmann x-chamber kit
drop forward

now my question is, the range on this is pretty bad compared to the automatic speed ball guns out there on woods fields, and i was wondering why that is? the velocity is the same (we have to be below 290fps, and i'm around 285) and none of those guns have the flatline or anything. so i was wondering how is it that they're range is about twice as far before the ball starts to drop down.

Please dont tell me to go with a flatline barrel. I'm wondering the reasoning for this huge difference in range.

Get a flatline

Just kidding. All the ranges should be the same, maybe your gun has something wrong with it. The valve maybe? Check to make sure you don't have any leaks.

but i mean, its not just me, most of my friends with tippmanns are always saying that they have no range compared to an autococker. could it be something else, like low-pressure systems, or using nitro instead of co2?

Your friends are idiots.

Elementary physics, 2 objects flying at the same speed will go the same distance. If you are shooting the same velocity, you shoot the same range. End of story.

Ok. I see now. You didn't actually see them outshoot you. They just told you that. Like Enos said, your friends don't seem to be so smart.

Don't listen to your friends. I have an A-5 w/ a 14 in. All American and I can shoot just as far, if not a little farther than my friend's cocker.

Enos Shenk, thats not true unless you factor out spin.  If the balls coming out of the Tippmanns have topspin then they are gonna send the balls straight to the ground.  If the autocockers are shooting with no spin or backspin then it will have a longer range. Spin has to be factored in.
My guns name is Mr. Max in remembrance of my dog that got hit by a car: Tippmann A-5
Ricochet R-5
JCS double Trigger
Tippmann E-Grip
Flatline Barrel

Do you have the need for speed?

You're correct, but I think he means a little more of the all things being equal deal. Most barrels out there don't try and produce much spin. There you go again, thinkin on your feet and callin people on stuff.  A mod even.

With a good barrel fit, there will be no spin (unless you are using a Flatline).  No matter which gun you are shooting.

But here is a reason why your range is a LITTLE less than the electros and cockers:  Consistency.

You chrono in at 285, 275, 270, 289, 279, 280.

The DM5 (or w/e) chronos in at 289, 288, 289, 287, 289, 288.

So the DM5 is shooting average velocity of 288, and you are shooting average velocity of 280 or so.  So, on the average, the DM5 will have a little more range than you.  But that is just a little, unless your gun is really inconsistent.

Better guns have better consistency, which has all kinds of advantages.  But the idea that a gun can generally shoot further than another, at the same velocity, is simply false - barring a Flatline or similar device.

Physics is the great equalizer.

Please dont tell me to go with a flatline barrel. I'm wondering the reasoning for this huge difference in range.

If the velocity is the same the only difference is how high you elevate the muzzle of the marker. There can be no difference. Once the ball leaves the barrel at 285fps, whether it leaves the barrel of a Tippmann or an Angel, it slows down at exactly the same rate. If a ball is fired from each marker at the same velocity, at 100 feet both will be exactly the same.

The weight of the paintball can make a slight difference. Or your fellow players with their fancy guns are using fancy ramping programs in the electronic controls...not actually shooting 290 fps once off the chronograph and onto the field.

I have had the same problem. try oiling it. if it is under warrenty measure the range and if it is under 150 ft, send it in. The range should only drop when the air is low. Did you get your gun new or factory refurbished?

you don't mean oil the barrel do you? cause you should not do that.

but you should be oiling your marker. dry fire to spread the oil with the barrel off.
