Topic: Buying your first carPosted: 01 March 2006 at 4:19pm |

Hey, this summer I plan on getting a job, and would eventually like to buy my first car. I don't really know much about cars, so I was wondering, on average how much do you have to spend to get a used car that's pretty decent? Not real crappy looking, won't break down a lot, just a good basic first car. Thanks for any help.

It depends. I'm looking to spend about $6000 on my first car. I think anything above $5000 will get you something pretty decent. Check out www.craigslist.com for some cars that might be in your area.

I don't think you should set a certain price.
I mean it can't be like $300, but it will depend more on how well the previous owner(s) took care of the car. |

I spent 1k and got an 87 crown vic with LOW miles but I also got it
from my uncle. 1k can get you something good but remember its not about
looks just something to get you around. Try and deal with people you
can trust.

Drive around neighborhoods and look for the cars with those stickers from the city saying if they move the car in like a week or 2 weeks or something like that then the city will tow it...wait a couple days and if the sticker and car are still there then knock on the door cause odds are the people dont care about the car and plan on letting the city get rid of it for them which means they will sell cheap (dont haggle set your price if they say higher then leave)

First car? First nice car? Well, 12 thousand if your working, it will do you just fine, but if your still a student, 6,000 will get you a nice reliable clunker.

if you're patinet and act smart (have car checked out), you can get a decent car for $2000-4000. My first car was a '96 Integra in great condition for $3100.

Jeez, I wish I could afford a $6000 "clunker". I drive a 1983 BMW 320i. $1500. It's totally possible to get a good car(even a BMW) for around 3-5k. If you want a great car, look for a BMW 318ti in as good of condition as you can find. The handle well, get 30mpg on the highway, and you can carry stuff in them. Like a water heater.
In addition to that, a supercharger will boost it to 200hp at the wheels. Also, just about any BMW 6 cylinder engine will fit and work fine with that transmission. It's close to being drop-in. So buy a 95 318ti, buy the engine out of an M3 somebody wrecked, turbocharge and intercool THAT and get a 400hp sleeper. Edited by rednekk98 - 01 March 2006 at 6:52pm |

ask my dad , hes owns a shop. cars around this time of year go crazy so watch prices. i already got 2 cars and im 14 years old so i dont have to worry about this. 1.1969 Shelby gt500, big turbo!! kinda pro street 2.1932 Ford Pickup,(street rod) Sorry boys IMPORTS ARE TINKER TOYS TO ME. although a couple do catch my eye every once in a while, especially supra's!! dont get me wrong tho cuase they a way of transportation, and sometimes really comfy, but there just not my taste. cars this time of year get harder to run by, an average fore a newer used car is around 6k, dont get anything more cuase then u mine as well just buy a new car and make payments. |

I spent $800.
91 bronco, beautiful interior. Right now it has a tranny leak, and the dash lights don't work and it needs to get inspected. For a decent car, i would look at late 90's, early 00's toyotas and subarus. But that could cost from 2k-10k. |
